Banh Cuon for a Party
I'm having a birthday gathering at my house and would like to serve banh cuon. Does anyone know of a good place from which to order banh cuon? I live on the east side, and would like to avoid having to go to Santa Ana to get the goods.
TIA!
Any good Italian or French Restaurants in LA area?
For french, it's a bit of a trek, but Anisette Brasserie in Santa Monica is very good. As for Silverlake/Los Feliz, Cafe Stella and Cafe Beaujolais are both OK. Taix serves american food! As for good affordable Italian food on the east side, my search continues.
French macarons in Pasadena or Silverlake area?
Europane is definitely the first to try. Butter Tart on Verdugo Blvd in Eagle Rock also has some, though I've not tried them.
Looking for a good croissant in Pasadena / South Pasadena / Alhambra / Eagle Rock / downtown LA general areas
I second the suggestions for Le Petit Beaujolais and Euro Pane. I'm not that impressed by Porto's croissant - they are great at everything else including the guava and cheese streudel. In Pasadena, try Nicole's Gourmet Shop.
Btw, I also love La Boulange in SF...until I tried Cafe de La Presse in Union Square! Their pain au chocolat was to die for.
I'm on a quest for the best pain au raisin, so if any of you out there have found one in LA, do let me know!
Overpriced Los Feliz/Silverlake restos?
I lived in Los Feliz since 2004 and still come back to the old neighborhood to hang out sometimes. Yes, everything has gone upscale, although you can still find some affordable joints. If you want more affordable hangouts, try Eagle Rock! I live in Mt. Washington now, and the new places coming up around me are more affordable than the new ones in Silverlake/Los Feliz.
From Brooklyn to LA, where should I go?
If I were visiting LA for the first time, I would want to go to places where there is a bit of a scene so you can get a feel for Angelenos. My suggestions:
- Chaya Venice: happy hour. Used to be a good deal (haven't been in a while), but you'll see lots of pretty people mixed with the afterwork crowd.
- Duke's in Malibu: great view of the Pacific Ocean from the beach bar, you can say you sipped a mai tai and watched the sunset.
- Father's Office: great burgers and beer, then you can walk on down Montana Ave, which is a very typical west side scene.
- Katana Restaurant: be prepared to drop some money, but the Sunset people watching is prime here. They have very good Japanese grilled apps and OK sushi. Then you can walk over to the Comedy Store for a laugh.
- Cobras and Matador off Vermont: when you've had enough of the west side, check out how eastsiders roll. This is a lively wine and tapas place. Then walk over to Vermont Ave, which is the heart of Los Feliz - have a drink at Vermont Restaurant or The Dresden: this place was made famous from Swingers (the movie).
- Korean BBQ: many of the recs here are good, just pick one.
Have fun!
Dining suggestions for a foodie
A.O.C. is great. I celebrated my anniversary on the top patio of the restaurant and it was so much fun. Hip atmosphere, not so pretentious and very knowledgeable staff, wine by the glass galore, amazing cheese, fun tapas-sized servings make sharing fun...I can go on.
Birthday Party at the Edision what do you think?
I am looking for a place to celebrate my birthday as well and emailed the Edison a week ago to check on room availability. They still haven't replied to me, so it's off my list. I already had heard pretty negative things about the place - silly velvet rope policies included. I hear that the place is great for after work drinks, and the decor is certainly very cool. Otherwise, if you're looking for a vibrant singles scene and you or your friends have good luck getting into discriminating bars, then this is your place.
Cheap 60 People Luncheon Location Needed
You might check with The Café and Rose Garden Tea Room at the Hungtinton garden. Tea for large groups $25.50 per person with tips and tax included. I second Mission
Sunday Late Late Lunch or Early Tea Time
I am traveling for the day to San Francisco on Sunday (tomorrow) and am having lunch after 2pm in the city with 3 other friends. Do you have any recommendations on good places for either late lunch or early tea time / dinner? All the favorites (Slanted Door, Greens, Ideale, etc.) either close at 2pm or open at 5pm. Thanks for your help, chowhounds!
Chado Tea Room?- Pasadena
I've been to both the Chado locations - Beverly Hills and Pasadena - several times, and am a huge high tea fan. Skip Chado, in fact, run! They can careless about customer service, the cakes a bland, the service is slow, and the teas are average.
