The New Food Network Shows for This Year

I'm with you.

Alton Brown is obnoxious, and it's a mystery to me why so many people here like him. "Good Eats" is particularly unwatchable.

Dinner: Impossible! Presented by The No-New-Ideas Food Network

I couldn't agree more.

With its obnoxious sound effects and annoying sketches, "Good Eats" is completely unwatchable. I don't care how much Alton Brown knows about food; his show sucks.

TNFNS- 7/6/08 elimination (spoiler inside)

I thought the same thing at first, but I'm pretty sure that RR's show was also edited.

I just watched the clip, and I don't know what to think. How much was THAT clip edited?

TNFNS- 7/6/08 elimination (spoiler inside)

I've seen only a few episodes, but I thought Lisa deserved to go last night.

Lisa failed both parts of the challenge. In developing the menu, she basically told the kid what she wanted; she ended up making steak, which the kid said she didn't like! And she was absolutely terrible on camera. I thought she was much worse than Shane.

Anybody catch Throwdown with Mark Israel of Doughnut Plant?

I agree.

I found myself rooting for Bobby Flay for the first time ever. Israel was completely unlikeable.

Lisa is the absolute worst.

Terrible cook, terrible personality. Seeing her survive makes me dislike this show.

Those Inflammatory Scallops

That interview was outstanding! I really enjoyed it.

Top Chef-Tramonto's [Spoiler]

As much as I dislike Spike, I think he actually had a pretty good point about the scallops. What were they doing in the restaurant, especially when Tramonto opened his walk-in to camera crew for a nationally-televised show? Something tell me that scallops sales will be down for a while.

That said, Spike should have known better. All the other contestants knew that those scallops were bad news, yet Spike chose to use them. I would have loved to see Lisa go this week, but the judges got this decision right.

Top Chef - Restaurant Wars [Possible Spoilers]

Another terrible decision.

Lisa has been on the chopping block week after week. Why? Because she can't cook. How many dishes can she screw up before they send her home?

Top Chef-Improv

I agree that the judges messed this one up.

Antonia and Lisa not only used the wrong kind of sausage but also made a freakin' fish dish. Moreover, there was little alcohol flavor, and most of the dish was the wrong color. I don't think there's any question that one of them should have been sent packing.

Top Chef Episode #3

I found it strange that the contestants were so excited about finding commercial ranch dressing and barbecue sauce. Even if you're adding ingredients, that stuff is kind of nasty.

I agree completely, Linda. Zoi should have said that she wasn't comfortable making the dish.

Top Chef Episode #3

If any monkey can make pasta salad, that makes Zoi's sins that much worse. I don't care what the dish is; there's no excuse for flavorless food.

Top Chef Episode #3

I can't stand Andrew's personality. I don't know whether he's nervous or what, but he really rubs me the wrong way; he was out of control at the judges' table.

No reservations: Romania

As I've observed before, this season is not off to a good start. "No Reservations" has quickly gone from one of my favorite shows to a very missable hour of television. I did enjoy the blog post linked to above, though; I respect him for admitting that this wasn't his best show.

rules for buying cheap wine (under $10)

I couldn't agree more about Spanish wine. There isn't the value there that there once was, but there are plenty of tasty reds available for around $10 a bottle. And, like you, I'm especially fond of Spanish Monastrell and Garnacha.

Bourdain in London

I feel the same way.

I thought this episode was decent, but this season seems to be off to a weak start. Maybe I'm just in a foul mood or something, but I really haven't enjoyed the last two shows very much. Something seems to be missing.

Bittman's new Blog

I think the blog is off to a great start. Did anyone else see all the recipes posted on February 4? Wow!

It seems that a lot of folks around here don't care for Bittman, and I don't understand why. Personally, I really love How to Cook Everything Vegetarian; I have a ton of vegetarian cookbooks, and I think it's the best of the bunch.

Bittman's Tomato Paella from 9/5 Times

My wife and I are were underwhelmed by the dish until we added some salt. Once we did, it was outstanding.

This dish is simple and delicious. We'll be making it again soon.

French Fry Po-Boy

Never having had the real thing, it's great. Without meat, the Central Grocery muffuletta is still one of the world's best sandwiches.

A vegetarian friend of mine just gives in and eats meat when he's in New Orleans. He's declared the city a morality-free zone.
