Korean BBQ now open in Howell, NJ

The staff was very friendly, the food, fresh and decent portion for the price. Definitely take-out material, as the only seating is outside, brrrr. I do like my Korean on the spicy (or a lot spicy) side. I found it to be somewhat sweet to me. They dropped a few samples into our bag (MoDumJun and ChapChe), which I would definitely order next time I am there.

Right now, I a, looking at 4.5 inches of thread in ocean of wasted snowblind Blank screen (available screen width for me is 12 in. So this is a good idea how? And on my android phone, it is so big and you have to tap dance (literally) to try to size down *each* page you want to read, it's a total fail. Hope they didn't pay those beta testers too much. Ah heck, they were probably only the "moderators" anyway.

As for the fact we (CH) provide 80% of the traffic and CONTENT on Chow.com, is VERY reverent because half the stuff in Chow, is a rewrite of some CH thread!

The red diamonds indicate an "official" ChowTeam member. the "moderators" can use them at their discretion. I believe that, at least on Site Talk, all "moderators" should be mandated to use the diamond.

Amazing, isn't it? That much of a DROP (as in CH fell off the cliff) in traffic in one day. The design launch day.

That 8 point font is not the reply it is the thread size. I measured it, The reply field type is now maybe 10 pt. but the rest of the thread is 8. So still dang hard to read in this snowblind field.

Yep no surprise. After, over 6 years, of Chowhound.com being one of my opening tabs, on each of my computers, I now turn the page. I may keep it bookmarked, but Why?

It is interesting to note the stats from Alexa.com that the reach (Estimated percentage of global internet users who visit chow.com) stats for yesterday was -19.26%. I think the design change is a Fail.
http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/chow.com

Additionally, looking at where visitors go on Chow.com:
chowhound.chow.com 79.55%
chow.com 24.42%
search.chow.com 0.18%

It seems rather clear that what drives and keeps Chow.com going is the CH section, and you are losing people.
Those are some numbers.

Well said, Maria, the 99% of us who have complained in honest, about the size, contrast, bad use of color scheme, have pretty much been told by "certain" people here, without diamonds next to their names, about how "changes" are being made, when they are actually only bug fixes. We are still trying to read 8 pt. type in a space that is less than 50% of the page width. Telling people to essentially "suck it up" is an attempt to monitor others. Maybe they are afraid of a mutiny.

Exactly! I find out that a thread has been locked, by it disappearing from my profile. I also assumed it was a deliberate action since it has been that way for a while.

I agree, there was no apology, there was a statement, of the design stays as it is. And so far all the "improvements" have been BUG fixes.
In terms of UI, there is factional improvement of contrast. But on my 12in. wide screen, the discussion thread only uses, 5.5 in. That over 50% of blank, glaring space! And within that less that 50% of space is an 8 pt. typeface. These are measurements taken at 100%, so no zoom is involved. This is the design that they are staying with, love it or leave.
There has not been in the past 6 years of design changes, any accommodation to UI complaints. Only bug fixes of the new design. The same will happen here.
If we look bck at the last major change in Aug 2010
http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/726572
Again a large amount of outrage, and in all, at the end only bug fixes were done.

And I really think that the hidden mods should be forced to use their mod diamonds in any and all Site Talk posts.

New design doesn't work well on Android

Thanks! Yeah I finally, after 20 minutes, found out how to log in. And I am in Tech Support! It was funny, I held up my smart phone to the laptop screen, and what was on my laptop almost fit on the phone. Crazy, first time I ever saw a working site, create a smart phone/tab app, by making their entire site into a mobile app!

Wow! Just clicked over to egullet to check it out, try to get a feel for it. While, I can't speak for the tone of it (yet), it's design clearly has it over this new one. Clicking back to CH was such a shock! Why would any site want to have miles of blank space? And in such camouflage colors, making it so difficult to read?

But we have already been told, the new design is it, what's the use of giving constructive suggestions? Been on this site for 6 years now, it used to be my first and most read site. I've seen it go through many design changes, all for the worst, and corrections were for bugs only. This is not my first rodeo here.
Where as I used to happily spend hours reading topics and posts, now it is just minimum.
There are better sites out there, ones with good content, active discussions and a usable photo album. If Chow doesn't wish to compete, so be it.
Tavern on the Green used to be a great restaurant, now it's gone.

P.S. No site, like any other business, can have a "surplus population". Especially one that depends on ad revenue.

Basically, Some PTB decided that this is it and that's all. Now CH looks awful and is totally useless on my phone, I am a Android person. So will not be using it on my phone any more. On my laptop, I have a width of 11 inches on my screen, and the subject/content is only using 5.5 of that space at 100% zoom? Why? And it is not ads that I have blocked, I checked it out in an incognito window.

Others have outright said this "great new design" is unbearable enough that they are taking a break or finding a new site (Yep, I have that new site already picked out). And that is just those of us who care enough to even comment, the lurkers or the vacillaters are just going to slide out the door.

New design doesn't work well on Android

I agree, the design does not work at all. I am using my Samsung Galaxy S and the dolphin browser. I had a tab set up to take me straight to CH, already signed in.
Now, I start out as a new user, told I can "sign up" no place to log in, scratch that, after literally looking for it for 20 minutes, I was able to find the log in screen. THE HUGE login screen. Guess what still reminded mico-mini, yep the login button.

How do I get to my profile, Ah, maybe I'll touch the "MY" button. NOPE. I cannot find how to get to "My Profile".

Massive fail!

I know that each and every Site design change that Chow-CH has done, in the 6 years I've been a member has met with multiple amounts of dislike. This is now the worst.

Instead of making an Chow app for smart phones and tablets, you have made the site itself an app that fails quite badly. I just tried this on my phone and just like here, it fails. It is TOO BIG on my phone. Everything about it is much worst, now. I've been sliding away from CH, more and more this past year, due to a few factors, most editorial, but now this "design" shows that Bling is now where CH is headed and content is going out the door.

Question.........[moved from New Jersey board]

Some people prefer to order and eat at the bar, when they are by themselves. It doesn't make them look like a loner, someone taking up space (recalling a current rant by here about one person using a booth) or they just want the faster service, one gets at the bar, to eat and go.
I can see the issue being problematic, if the bar has a bartender and food is ordered via a server. The bartender may feel stiffed for a tip, or if the place is mainly a bar, and the food is a sideline. It comes down to the way the $$ gets spread.
If you just want to eat, not feel singled out at a table and go, make sure you take care of the Bartender, with a tip.
But, sitting at the bar, nursing some app, just to watch a game or to watch the hooters/kilted crowd, I would say was inappropriate.
All in all, I'd say the answer depends on the situation.

Buckaroo Burrito opening in Bayville, prev. site of BK on Rt 9

Tried it today as I had time to kill before work and wanted to grab something for dinner. Inside, looked comfortable. You place your order and it is made in front of you, so you can see how fast or how slow the process is going. Nothing is written down, which I think will not work in their favor. The two dudes ahead of me kept adding things to their order as it was being made, slowing mine down, so I could watch it as it cooled down to room temp. I am sure, since three people had "hands on the additions, they ended up undercharging for it. They staff was friendly.
The burrito was large, I had the chicken Koo's style. But by the time it was wrapped it was room temp. I took it as take out. I was impressed with the rice, it seemed to have a good hit of lime and cilantro, tho I did wish that you could have had cilantro as one of the things you could add on. The chicken I could taste, the beans (black) and pico had very little flavor register. I was disappointed that there was no fish taco, shrimp could be added as $$ extra. No Taco bell, but not great Mex either.

Better Ad Targeting

And it has been said, in every post complaining about any style, type, vendor or product ad, ADBLOCK (it's free, and you get NO STRESS from using it) is your friend.

To even think that a site like ChowHound or Chow, carefully matches each post with elegantly selected , fine china, white cloth ads is rather silly. Heck I get recipes showing for 4th of July, any time of year. Last week I had Valentine Day ones.
I am willing to bet the Organic Farm, that the ads placed are not selected to upset, insult or damage any tender feelings of any person. I feel very sure that TPTB will attest to that.

Toms River, Chipotle and Jersey Mike's opening on Hooper Ave

"Chain type restaurants" are exactly what a franchise is. The relative excitement this news is generating here only speaks to the vast desert wasteland of good dining spots in the Toms River area. Sad.

Mr. Slurppy

In the week this has been posted, another post came into this board. The person asked if it was "OK" for them to dine at a "upscale" restaurant, since they have some facial scarring. In a whole, all replies have come in that, "Hey, it's all on the people that would consider this an offense, you have every right to dine where you wish".
I am sorta seeing how those remarks, speak to this issue as well. Just a thought to consider.

If you were 16 again... culinary school?

Ah nope. Not as a whole degree program. I have been to the CIA and Johnson & Wales, and from all I could see, I pretty much knew a great deal of the first few years of education. I could and can see the value of taking some coursework, for example, sugar work, as enrichment.

I am social Media friends with someone who is attending N.A.I.T. (The Northern Alberta Institute of Technology) for Culinary and from what I now of her course work ( I recall she is a senior) she is getting a splendid education.
