Korean tofu restaurant-what to do with the heated stone bowl?
Wouldn't that be Kringlish?
I ate the entire pizza, and I bet you have too (ladies included)
I've never heard this one topped. Worked with a woman (in her late 30s at the time), a divorced mother of two children, around 9 and 12 years of age. She voluntarily told a group of co-workers that, on a first date, she would suggest going out for pizza. She and her date would order a pizza and she would say, "Oh, could we get one for my kids?" Whereupon the date, not wanting to look like a piker, would spring for an extra pizza. A large extra pizza.
When the date was over, and she would get dropped off, she would take her extra pizza into the kitchen, sit down and proceed to polish off the second one by herself that night before she went to bed.
What are your favorite products at Trader Joes?
Newest fave: TJ's coffee ice cream, topped with sliced almonds. Ahhhhh...
Restaurant Secret Shopping
Any C'hounds ever done restaurant secret shopping? I don't mean restaurant reviews but actual paid assignments to go in and be a diner in an honest-to-goodness, flatware-on-the-table restaurant, have a meal, and then report back on everything from ambience waitstaff, food, noise level, lighting and cleanliness of the restrooms? If so, was it fun? Or one of those, 'did it once, and never again' things?
Food "Bucket List"?
I think I've had a bucket list all my life, although I've thought of it more as a 'one of these days' list. Still on it: summer pudding, a lobster roll (or three), an oyster po' boy, a witchety grub (gotta be drunk for that one), rattlesnake chili, real absinthe, beignets, haggis, tagine, kumiss, roasted hedgehog, jellied eel, maitake 'shrooms, cardoons, and brunswick stew (with squirrel). That's at least half on the list.
ISO: GREAT BROWN RICE AND BROWN RICE DISHES
I never have been able to develop any enthusiasm for brown rice, but love quinoa. And quinoa makes an excellent fried rice of any variety; beef, chicken, pork or shrimp.
What is a "Foodie"
A foodie is a person who, given the choice between great food and great sex, hesitates.
Yet another desperate call for Breakfast ideas...
A BLT bagel (or cheese, lettuce and tomato). Take an onion bagel, toasted, grilled or sauteed onion rings, cream cheese schmear, thick slice of tomato , romaine lettuce (or fresh spinach), and pre-cooked bacon or good cheddar, assemble and enjoy.
Catfish: Totally Underappreciated?
I love it dredged in cornmeal, pan fried and drizzled with fresh lemon juice.
(Phoenix-East Valley) Very silly question...where can I buy twine/string for tying up roasts, poultry, etc.?
I've found kitchen twine, in various thicknesses, ate Walmart, but NOT in the kitchen section. Oddly enough the Walmart in my area keeps them in the hardware section.
Safe Drink List
Lillet isn't that easy to come by in many restaurants and if the OP is not already familiar with the drink it could be awkward trying to explain to a server what it is.
Asian desserts...why don't I like them?
I grew up with yokan (and kanten) and I won't willingly touch the stuff today.
Any great ideas for Chinese Eggplant?
Garlicky, peppery Szechuan style eggplant on hot rice.
Best Locally Available Hot Chocolate Powder?
Originally I was told that it was seasonal, but then a month later (February) it came back in. At least where I am.
Best Locally Available Hot Chocolate Powder?
Trader Joe's Sippin' Chocolate. Because it's a dark chocolate drink, not a milk chocolte drink.
Everything is Better Topped with an Egg
Chowhound's Recipes has an Asparagus with miso sauce topped with a poached egg. I haven't tried it yet, but it sounds intriguing.
Odd Request
I have a good friend (first generation SE asian from a culture that doesn't use chopsticks) who consistently likes to eat at asian restaurants, but is not handy with chopsticks. I bought her a pack of 'cheater' chopsticks (joined at the top, like tongs) in their own carryalong sheaths. They work well with both sushi and dim sum.
Canned Fried Gluten
Hmmm. Interesting. Not appetizing, but interesting. Thanks for the info, kc and paul.
Canned Fried Gluten
Is anyone familiar with this stuff? I have a friend whose family is Taiwanese (culturally distinct from Chinese, she insists), who tells me that one of the family holiday food musts is canned fried gluten. Is anyone out there familiar with this stuff? How it's made, how it's served, what it tastes like?
The Truth About Robert Irvine?
OTOH: Martha's made a huge comeback. On network tv again, back in control of her empire. And she was convicted, sentenced and did her time.
Help!! Everything is sticking to my pan!!
Sorry, there are two posts on non-stick and it got confusing. Yes, those are the pans marketed under the Todd English aegis.
Musing on the range of comfort food - what dishes hug you?
Corn chowder
Something my mother's family called scratch beans
Hot chocolate on rainy days or snowy nights
Beef stew
Poi, lomi salmon and laulau
congee
linguica, eggs and rice
Food Network Chefs
It's been a few years, but back before the Dot Com crash, the statistics I was seeing in Human Resources analyses were showing that more than 60% of applicants lied on their resumes, usually about level or depth of experience.
Help!! Everything is sticking to my pan!!
I don't use metal utensils on conventional non-stick surfaces in any case; manufacturers' claims to the contrary, I don't believe PTFE surfaces stand up to knife edges or metal spoons.
