Steiner Ranch - Am I Missing Something?
I know what you mean. We'll pick up Boathouse Grill every so often - decent burgers and shrimp, and we've enjoyed Ciola's in Lakeway. Los Pinos is a solid favorite as well.
I've read about the meat, but what about the sides?
My husband's the meat guy, but some different or special sides are really important to me at a BBQ restaurant. I think I recall someone writing about sliced avocado at one of the Lockhart institutions; could it be true? Are there any other BBQ restaurants that have more than potato salad, coleslaw, and white bread?
Closed: Cafe Brix on Bee Caves Road
It's close to MoPac - there's also a McAllister's and Suzi's Chinese Grill and Amy's. If you're on Bee Caves going toward MoPac, it will be on your right.
Pork Chops and Hatch Chiles
Sounds delicious. I often put green chilies and pork in the crock pot for a weeknight dinner. I think your gravy idea sounds great, too.
Red Bud Grill
I'm with you, shan. I went with some friends for a weekday lunch, and my salad, the same one Knoblauch describes above, was decent, but we were pretty shocked by the prices. I'm inclined to try it again, though, on a Monday - or for other specials. I do love a good fried pickle.
Fun birthday lunch suggestion?
Yep, I'm turning the big 3-9 tomorrow, and I just want to have a relaxing lunch with my husband and daughter somewhere very Austin. We moved here a year ago and have tried many spots from these boards, so I look to you again for guidance. I was looking forward to picking up Flip Happy, but they're closed tomorrow. We're pretty flexible on food type, and really high bills stress me out, so we wouldn't want it to be too pricey. I'd also love to eat somewhere outside with a view, but a fun indoor atmosphere would be cool, too. Thanks in advance, wise ones.
TexMex in Central Austin that does not "Keep It Weird"
We went to Angie's recently, based mainly on this board's recommendation, but we were shocked at how dirty it was. Everyone was very friendly, and the food was mediocre (American cheese?), but I'll never get anyone in my crew to return because of the filth. Maybe we went at the end of a big rush?
Trip to Round Rock this weekend--Lunch Ideas?
You should check the Austin boards, where I thought this might get moved.
TARGET - what's your favorite food/beverage item?
I got the blueberry granola cereal yesterday, and it is fabulous.
What to order at Popeye's? [split from a discussion on the Boston board]
In high school, I worked at a local fried chicken establishment where we sold "Puffs, deep-fried butermilk biscuits" - sounds gross, huh? But, with some honey...mmm...
What to order at Popeye's? [split from a discussion on the Boston board]
I like the variety in side items - the red beans and rice and dirty rice are both good.
"Rustic Brunch".......
a yummy strata made with crusty bread, some breakfast meat, eggs, and cheese - maybe with potatoes or mushrooms
Z Tejas?
I have a gift card burning a hole in my pocket, and it looks like we'll go this weekend. What are our best bets? Thanks!
Best salad bar?
Actually, it was the thread on Fogo de Chao that made me think of it! Indeed, I was hoping to get away with a lighter check...
Best salad bar?
Great salad bars seem to be few and far between, and I don't think I've found one in Austin yet. Do you have any suggestions?
Which things are okay to cheap out on?
I know, I know: there's no substitute for the best ingredients. Sometimes, though, I have to sacrifice in some areas to afford other high quality ingredients. What, if anything, is fine to buy generic?
Ciola's in Lakeway?
Just thought I'd boot this to the top to see if anybody had any thoughts.
Thanks.
Best Breakfast Bars
And they had such a cool texture, too. Like they were made of little tiny pebbles.
Yum.
Your Most Requested Dish Recipe
I'd love a great coconut cake recipe, too. I know my husband would love it as a birthday surprise!
Ciola's in Lakeway?
We went when we first moved here last summer, and I had a delicious pistachio-crusted trout. We're considering going again for my husband's birthday. Anybody been recently? Anything to avoid?
boneless chicken breast in the crockpot
I don't know how chowhound-ish this is, but for a satisfying weeknight supper in a hurry, I'll put a jar of our favorite salsa (usually tomatillo or chipotle) over the chicken breasts in the crockpot. When we get home, I shred the chicken with two forks and serve with warm tortillas, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, cheese, guacamole, and whatever else looks good. The shredded chicken is great on quesadillas, too.
Los Pinos
This is one of our favorite spots. I haven't had the Cochinita Pibil, but the chili relleno is excellent, as is the ceviche. Also, the tortillas (both corn and flour) are homemade and wonderful. Enjoy!
Warm, Cozy & Casual (?)
We're fans of Chez Zee, though I seldom see it mentioned on CH.
ISO one-bite deliciousness
Please post both feta recipes! My husband has just discovered he loves it, so I'm thrilled!
Eastside Mexican Recommendations by a Native Austinite
This is so useful. Would you describe the relleno at El Azteca for me? I'm always looking for more of a crispy thing going on, but they seem to be soggy. Thanks!
