Kaito Sushi-Solo Omakase?

That is exactly the ammo I needed! Thanks cgfan, Friday or Saturday it is. Also, this will be my first omakase experience, so your insight is greatly appreciated.

Kaito Sushi-Solo Omakase?

Final question....the wife really wants to go on a Monday, which is the actual birthday. I am against this due to the freshness of the fish and the fact we will have to fight traffic coming from Santee. How bad will a Monday dining experience be? My ultimate goal is some good uni, which we can't get out in the East County. If I can still get some good fish, I might have to give in (she is paying for it....) Thanks again for all the advice!

Kaito Sushi-Solo Omakase?

Thanks for the input everyone...I am truly excited about my meal and wish it wasn't 42 days away! Can I reserve a spot with Kaz in advance (far in advance)? I'll repost with my results, just hope I don't turn the wife into a high-end sushi fiend! It's much cheaper to have her thinking that Sushi Deli is the cat's meow.

Kaito Sushi-Solo Omakase?

My wife has offered a birthday dinner anywhere I want, and although Urasawa would be nice, Kaito Sushi seems more reasonable. Problem is, she isn't as adventurous as I am regarding sushi. I would love to do omakase, with an emphasis on the exotic, but she is more a "tuna, salmon, oyster" kind of person. Can I do omakase on my own? Should I request to sit in front of Morita-San's station? Will Chef Morita mind if I have someone who is more in love with 'salmon nigiri with ponzu and lemon' than a nice serving of uni or ankimo? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Calamari Steak near the Bahia

Thanks for the suggestions...I told them to go get a squid sandwich at PL Seafoods, and then go to a nice dinner for the anniversary. I don't think Calamari is a San Diego specialty, but if you're landlocked in NM, who knows what they'll crave.

Calamari Steak near the Bahia

My Aunt and Uncle are coming in from Albuquerque for my wedding, and she wants to find a good Calamari Steak near the Bahia (where they're staying) for their own anniversary. I don't really know what's around there, I suggested a squid sandwhich from P.L. Seafoods, but I think they want something a little more formal. Any suggestions?

Any recs for Santee-area sushi? Close to Domo Sushi, but they haven't had favorites like uni and aji when I've been there.

Need Recs for Proposal Dinner

Thinking Super Cocina won't quite cut it. What's the most romantic restaurant in SD? And is proposing over dinner cliche?

soltan banoo

Taking an old friend out for lunch this week, who wanted something "special" besides burgers (kids, non-adventurous husband). Thought this might fit the bill since it's in the area. Any thoughts????

BEST RESTAURANTS IN PALM SPRINGS

while this post is still going....I'm taking my girlfriend for her 30th next month to palm springs for the weekend. We're staying at hotel zoco, which I hear has a horrible eatery (eatz). looking for a nice steakhouse or something that isn't too fancy (blowing all my money on the poolside casita) for dinner. Any other recs? Just looking for good food....

Sandwiches in SD

I would suggest two locations in Ocean Beach (just down the way from Sea World). Chris's Liquor and Deli on Sunset Cliff's and West Point Loma has a large number of specialty sandwhiches, very popular amongst the locals. Also, Poma's Deli on Bacon St. and Niagara Ave. in Ocean Beach has great Italian subs. You can probably request light on the oil if that's a concern. Here's the link for Poma's.

Enjoy!

gentrification in OB

I too am bummed about the changes around here. I can't imagine the Irish place or the Boll Weevil doing too well over the long run. OB's a tough place to open a new restaurant....

Indian Riverside/ Corona Area (Dosas ?)

There is a great Indian place off of Magnolia in Riverside (Just west of Tyler, used to be a Toys R' Us next door,). Can't remember the name off hand, but it has some great food. It's called Bombay Palace or something of that nature....

gentrification in OB

Just noticed a new restaurant coming to OB. "Wild Ginger Bistro-Vietnamese Cuisine" (previously the Brazillian "Surfari Eats"). We also got a Thai restaurant finally (Thai Time Bistro). I love the new choices, but I hope they don't bastardize an already nuanced and refined cuisine. The last Vietnamese "Bistro" I went to was in the Pearl District in Portland, and I had to ask for lettuce for my spring rolls. Plus no mint! Anyone know about this new restaurant?

Breakfast in SD

I'll second Village Kitchen, with a couple conditions. One, this isn't a destination restaurant, so unless you live or are vacationing in OB, don't bother. Don't get me wrong, I adore the place (I live 1/2 block away), but it is your typical greasy-spoon diner....which are some of my favorites. Come early for the local atmosphere, and the very competent service. I agree that the Mexican breakfasts are great. Buy a Sunday paper, get here early, people watch and enjoy!

SD Thai on Convoy

I've eaten there a few times. It is a little ma-and-pop place it seems, with pop cooking in the exposed kitchen (it's small) and ma serving. Water comes in cool little silver cups, and you get a rather pedestrian green salad with every lunch special. I think the price is right, though, so give it a try. Opens at 11:30. I usually get the special on the board. Also, don't forget Sakura in the same center.

LA to Mammoth and back

I'm including a link from the San Diego Tribune, might help you out. I don't mind Schatt's, but it can be pretty crowded. I second the Restaurant at Convict Lake. I stay at Convict every few years or so, and it is definitely worth a splurge. Hope the article helps....

Help-need ideas for Cinco de Mayo themed desserts in SD

I'm attending a Cinco de Mayo party, and I've been delegated for desserts. Any good Mexican bakeries where I can find something like a tres leches cake? What about Flan, easier to make or buy? Don't feel like scalding myself with carmelized sugar! Thanks in advance....

Thank you very much for the info. I think I'm going to just fill up in P.N. or Ensenada and just enjoy the scenery.

Ensenada to San Felipe Hwy 3

I'm driving from Ensenada to San Felipe next month on Hwy 3. I know its sparsely populated, but is there anywhere to eat along the way? Also, aside from the food, any reason not to drive it during daylight hours. Drove it once 11 years ago in the middle of the night, but I wasn't quite as wise as I am now (ha-ha). I'm returning on the usual route through Mexicali. Also, any rec's for Puerto Nuevo and San Felipe? I usually end up at El Galleon in P.N. Just a habit.

Best Saigon-style pho in Westminster

Westminster is still my indoctrination of pho 13 years ago. I've tried it all over, and living in San Diego now, I've had quite a few good bowls. I prefer the more (southern?) taste of anise/clove in my broth. Where to get the best bowl of pho in Little Saigon? My folks live in Riverside, and they are junkies now....

affordable special ocassion dining in chico area?

I'm a Chico alumni (many moon ago), but I'll admit my special-ocassion dining was limited then. Been back a few times, and the downtown has some nice places. Try http://www.newsreview.com/chico/More?... for some ideas, and make sure to stop into "The Bear" (Madison Bear Garden) for a burger and atmosphere. Good luck!

Where can I buy passion fruit in San Diego?

There is a vendor at the OB Farmer's Marke (every Wednesday) that sells passion fruit in season. He is really generous and usually throws in extras. Extracting the juice is another thing. You don't get much out out of them, but I'd use a strainer and extract what you can out of the pulp.
