The Pig--Chapel Hill
Where is their menu posted online? I would love to check it out.
Barbecue Joint (Chapel Hill, NC) closed?
I went by today and something new is going in this space. It's called Pig and I don't know if it's run by the same people although it appeared that way. They listed a website but my search didn't turn up anything. Does anybody know anything about this?
I would be thrilled to see something new from the Barbecue Joint people. I loved thier food.

Chapel Hill NC - Kitchen Restaurant (Midtown Market) - Anyone Know About This New Place?
I was curious about this and went by and looked in the storefront window. They have a website that gives a general description of their plans. The website is http://kitchenchapelhill.com
It's sort of vague but it sounds bistro like and definitely an improvement over the wing place.
Sandwhich moving (Chapel Hill, NC)
On the sign in front of the new location, they mention they will be serving dinner. Anybody heard anything about extended hours?
Twisted Noodle opening in Chapel Hill?
While at Eastgate in Chapel Hill, I noticed that the storefront where the China Chef used to be now has a Twisted Noodles sign up. Is the place in Durham now opening a Chapel Hill branch or moving? I went to their website but didn't see any mention. Anybody know anything?
Milltown - Carrboro - Lunch - Service Stinks!
I have been there twice in the last two months and I agree that the service has gone downhill. One time they were pretty busy and seemed to be understaffed, but the second time there really wasn't any reason for the service to be so slow. The service from the hostess/bartender bad almost to the point of open hostility. I thought maybe it was because we had our baby with us but she was equally rude to everyone else who came in.
I do wonder if the owners have changed because the service and the food were better in the past.
Steamed milk without an espresso machine?
I am having the same issue in trying to replace my soon to die milk steamer. It's called a Cappucino Crazy and, despite the unfortunate name, is great at heating and frothing milk and only cost around $30. I would just get another one but I think they don't make them anymore as I can't find it anywhere in stores or online. Has anybody heard of anything that's similar to this product?
South Estes farmer's market, Chapel Hill
Has anybody been to the South Estes farmer's market in University Mall lately? I went once back when they first started and it was pretty small. However, when I've driven past lately it seems to have expanded a significant amount. I know it can't compare with the Carrboro farmer's market yet, but is it worth a trip?
Good eats near the Westin Alexandria
All these suggestions seem great and are exactly what I'm looking for. By less expensive, I mean entrees about $20 or less and these restuarants seem to have plenty of options in that price range. It sounds like the Trademark Bar might also be worth checking out. I usually try to avoid hotel food, but those small plates sound like they're worth making an exception for, especially the mac and cheese.
Thanks so much for all the great feedback.
Good eats near the Westin Alexandria
I'll be staying at the Westin Alexandria at the edge of Old Town for a few days and am looking for recommendations for nearby places to eat. I'm interested in casual, less expensive places and would be very interested in any good Chinese or Thai food. I will have a car so if there's something really great, I am willing to make a drive.
Thanks very much.
Good coffee and pastries in downtown Charleston
Yes, this is exactly what I'm looking for. Thank you so much for the suggestion.
Good coffee and pastries in downtown Charleston
I'm looking for recommendations for a non-sit down place in downtown Charleston that has good coffee and pastries. I did a search for previous posts on this topic and could not find anything really relevant.
If there is someplace truly great outside of downtown, I could drive to the West Ashley or James Island area.
Thanks very much.
Chapel Hill: New Bakery on Franklin St.?
I think that Sugarland has opened by now and I'm wondering if anybody has been by to check it out. I saw on their website that they would be serving beignets and that alone is enough to motivate me to make the trip downtown.
Help with SouthEast US Road Trip (VA NC SC GA) [moved from Not about Food board]
Speaking of places likely to be open on Christmas and Christmas Eve, I would head to Buford Highway and check out some of the Asian restuarants out there. They might be more likely to be open on Christmas Day. Two Buford Highway places that have been recommended are Canton House (for dim sum) and Little Szechuan. If you search this board, you can find a lot more.
Also, if you're interested in barbecue, the area around Lexington, NC (between Charlotte and Winston-Salem) is a center for western NC style barbecue. The NY Times did an article about touring wineries and barbecue eateries in the area that was pretty informative. Here's a link to the article:

Charleston Bound! Advice Needed
I was really underwhelmed by the Sanctuary. Considering all the other great options in Charleston, it seems a long way to go for not spectacular food. However, I have read some raves about the Sanctuary on this board so my experience could have been atypical.
For lunches, I would suggest Basil for Thai food and Fast and French on Broad for sandwiches and soup.

Charleston noshing
I would second the recommendation for Basil. It's not the best Thai food I have ever tasted in my life but it is really good. I like it enough that I try to go whenever I visit Charleston. It's also a beautiful space so that enhances the experience. If you feel like making the trek downtown, I think it's worth it.
Whole Foods in Chapel Hill expanding?
I agree that Weaver Street has by far the best bread and baked goods in the area and they are very reasonably priced. However, their produce selection is pretty sad and their prices on basic food items like milk, canned goods, etc. are fairly high.
I find that each grocery store in the area has certain things they do best. This means I end up shopping at about eight different places, but I'm really glad to have all the options to pick and choose from.
Whole Foods in Chapel Hill expanding?
I can easily believe that the CH location is one of the top revenue producers because it is always packed in there, no matter when you go. Along with brokegradstudent, I will be thrilled if the expansion brings more space to move around. I would also love to see one of those wood burning ovens like I have seen in some newer stores, but I don't know if that's even a possibility.
That's really interesting that they're thinking of building a second store in Chapel Hill. With Trader Joe's moving into the area, it looks like our food shopping options are really going to diversify.
Whole Foods in Chapel Hill expanding?
I had heard that they were planning to expand. When I went yesterday, I noticed that several of the neighboring stores were closing which leads me to belive that they must be planning a pretty big expansion. Does anybody know when work is supposed to start and how far into the shopping center they're going to expand?
Watts Grocery in Durham, NC
I had a similar experience. I didn't have any problems with the service (everyone was friendly and very on top of everything), but I was not impressed with the the food. We had the crabcakes and I had the parpadelle and my friend had some sort of pork dish. It was all okay, not bad in any way but just nothing special.
I think this would maybe be a better place to stop in for a drink and appetizers because the glass of wine I had with dinner was great and their late night menu looks much more exciting than what's available for dinner.
Thoroughly fed up with Whole Foods in Raleigh
I have to agree with the chef. The customer behavior I have witnessed at the Chapel Hill Whole Foods is pretty appalling. Again, not to say that the Whole Foods corporation is perfect, they are far from it. However, I've rarely had a problem with the staff at the Chapel Hill store.
I had heard that the Chapel Hill store was planning to expand so maybe things will be better there when it's not such a cramped shopping environment.
Chapel Hill: New Bakery on Franklin St.?
This does sound promising. Franklin Street is in need of a good pastry place. Now I'll just keep my fingers crossed that they open sooner rather then later.
farm stands in Triangle?
Thanks for all the responses. I now have some promising places to investigate.
farm stands in Triangle?
I'm looking for something that is open more than two days a week. I guess I should have put that in the original post.
farm stands in Triangle?
Does anyone know of outlets other than the farmer's markets where one could buy produce directly from the grower? I was trying to remember where I had seen small farm stands in the past and the only one that came to mind was a gentleman on Erwin road who sporadically sells tomatoes from his garden. I would be particularly interested in any stands nears Chapel Hill or Carrboro.
Chapel Hill, NC recs
If you want a quick breakfast, Weaver St in Carrboro (a ten to fifteen minute walk from downtown Chapel Hill) has amazing pastries and pretty good coffee. They also have hot food if you're looking for that. It gets crowded on the weekends so try to go early, as in before 10.
Slightly different tourist take on Charleston
For something different than traditional southern cuisine, Basil is a really nice Thai place downtown on King street. There is also Mama Brown's barbecue in Mt Pleasant, although that would probably fall into the southern category.
Brunch at Milltown (Carrboro)
I tried to go yesterday for brunch but they weren't opening until noon. Does anybody know if this is a regular thing or if they usually open at the posted hour of 10:30? Also, I would be curious to know how brunch is there, if anybody's been. Now that the weather is cooler, the idea of eating brunch on their patio is very appealing.
What are you buying at Carrboro or Durham Farmers' Market?
I'd agree with the assessment of the Wednesday market and the Thursday market has even less vendors. I would estimate that there are about six or seven vendors total at the Thursday market. However, I really like the Thursday Southern Village market because it's so much less crowded than both the Wednesday and Saturday markets. Also, the time of the Thursday market is much more convenient for me.
What are you buying at Carrboro or Durham Farmers' Market?
I would love to get some figs but I usually go to the Thursday Southern Village market and haven't noticed anybody selling figs. Has anyone seen figs at either the SV market or the Wednesday Carrboro market?
