Posting Specials with a Price?

It is tacky when waiters recite specials and do not list the price. Very Tacky.

New Yorker looking for one restaurant to represent LA

I know it's impossible to pick one place that represents all of LA so maybe a better way to phrase it is one place that is representative of what's good about restaurants in LA. Something around Hollywood, West Hollywood, Beverly Hills or Downtown would work. Santa Monica is probably too far. We're staying in Burbank.

Here are some places in New York I love:

Casa Mono
Dell' Anima
Marlow $ Sons
Maialino
Al di La
Momofuku Ssam Bar

Hope this helps.

Thanks!

New Yorker looking for one restaurant to represent LA

Hi Y'all. I'm going to be in LA the weekend 8/20 -8/21 for a wedding. I'm probably only going to have time to go out to one restaurant but I'd like it to be a good meal. We can probably afford to spend around $60 per person all in. The only thing that won't work is places that are exclusively seafood. Anything else is on the table. It's going to be a group of 4 so I'm looking for something that is more of a fun convivial vibe. We won't mind waiting for a table as long is there a bar where we can have drinks.

I know picking one place to represent LA is a tall order so any suggestions would be really appreciated.

Thanks!

Is the Osterie d'Italia 2011 worth getting?

Thanks a lot for all the info. How about the Michelin guide? Has anybody ever used it in Sicily? I know it lists what may be considered a different type of restaurant, but in general is it a good guide?

Are you sure that's the correct link. It appears to be dead.

Is the Osterie d'Italia 2011 worth getting?

I'm going to Sicily in a few weeks and want to have a really good restaurant guide. I found a list of SlowFood picks on this board but I want to know if this list comprises all the Sicily restaurants in the book or is it just the top picks. How comprehensive is this book? Any suggestion on where can I buy it in the States? Thanks a lot for your help.

Don ciccio, Bagheria (Pa)
U locale, Buccheri (Sr)
Trattoria del crocifisso, da baglieri, Noto (Sr)
Trattoria del gallo, Palazzolo Acreide (Sr)
Osteria paradiso, Palermo
Piccolo napoli, Palermo
Da salvatore, Petralia Soprana (Pa)
Fratelli borrello, Sinagra (Me)
Vite e vitello, Siracusa

Can I Chill at Porsensa?

What's the vibe at Porsena? Can anybody who's been answer the following questions? Is there a bar? Do people eat at it? What's the overall vibe like? Upscale? Quick and casual? My SO and I usually choose restaurants where we can eat at the bar. I guess we just think this is a little more fun. We can chat for a while and go at our own pace and eat when we get hungry. Although I've heard great things about the food, for some reason I'm thinking Porsena is the kind of place were you get in and out (maybe like Frank or something like that) rather than a place where you can relax and spend the evening with good food and a good atmosphere.

Any feedback on this issue would great. Thanks y'all!

Sptizer's, I have money! Will trade you for food! PLEASE!!!

Went to Spitzers on a quiet Sunday night this past weekend. After telling the hostess we were a party of three, would be eating and drinking, and would like to sit at a table, she proceeded with the following interrogation: Her: Will you be eating dinner or just having snacks? Me: We'll be eating dinner. Her: Will everybody be eating? Me: Yes, everyone will be eating. Her: Is everyone going to order entrees? Me: I can't be positive that each person will order an entree, but we're all here for dinner and we'll all be eating and drinking.

I'm not sure why she was still unconvinced that we would order enough food to justify occupying three seats at a table, but she then offered us stools by the window and said we could get a table if the restaurant didn't fill up. (The front room was half empty.) We sat by the window for a couple of minutes, then realizing how ridiculous this was I asked again for a table and assured her again that we were there for dinner. She told us to wait while she checked with a manager then disappeared. We finally did get seated at a table but I had to ask 3 times and was practically pleading with her by the third. She apparently just didn't think we would eat enough. By this time I was so frustrated that I wanted to go someplace else. I mean, seriously ?? We all came to eat dinner. I know they need to maximize return on the tables but who's the manager that thinks it's a good idea to treat customers this way? Should I have emailed our orders in advance so we could pre-qualify for a table? This was just rude.

First Date in East Village

Can anybody recommend someplace decent in the east village for a first date. Someplace more interesting and fun than romantic. Price: roughly $50 per person all included. Any cuisine. Reservations would be nice but not necessary as long as we can wait at the/a bar.

Thanks!

Pizza by the slice in Manhattan

I know about all the whole pie joints, but where can I get the best slice (besides Joe's)?

Anyone ever walk-in to Casa Mono?

I've done it twice. Had to wait at the bar next door for a little while but otherwise it was no problem.

ever wish you could lower your food standards?

I've recently come to accept this about the restaurant biz: It's a lot of BS. Don't get me wrong. I eat out at least twice a week. I'm a serious foodie and I love restaurants. But guess what? If you're a half-way decent cook, you can cook that at home. You can even cook a lot of food that's served in higher end places. And you can probably do it better because often times you'll give it more care and attention than it got in the restaurant kitchen and you won't have to make some of the comprimises required for serving large numbers of people fast. I don't expect magical experiences at restaurants as much as I used to but I'm happy when they do happen - and they still do.

Pastas where too heavy when I was there. And portions where too big - if you can complain about such a thing. The crudo I had was good really good though.

Help Please with dress code in Manhattan

Dining in NYC is generally more casual these days, even at the high end. Jeans are almost always acceptable except at some 3 and all 4 star joints.

Calling all Manhattan-ers in the know!

I agree about skipping burger joint. it's a good burger place, but I think it gets extra point for it's location. corner bistro is one of my favorite burger experiences all around. i just love the vibe of that place. if you really wanted what most people consider to be the best burger, you'd have to endure the insanity of shake shack.

Tia Pol Disaster

i've been to Tia Pol a few times and have found the food to be generally pretty good. Last time I was there however was not so great. I guess we ordered the wrong dishes because no in our party of three was impressed. The snails for example were a total waste. Also, we ordered a $30 pork special (the only dish we ate that night that I would consider very good) and the waitress took it away before we were done with it. I guess we were talking and didn't notice her clearing. We brought it up afterwards, but frankly, she didn't seem that concerned. I've been to this place at least 4 times and have enjoyed it, but after the last experience, I think I'm done. I know the owners have opened another place. Is Tia Pol on autopilot now?

Ninth Ave. International Food Festival

Go early and leave early. I live on 9th avenue in the 40's. Trust me, it gets filthy and really smelly by noon. Don't get me wrong. I love NYC street food but generally speaking, this is not the best of it. See other posts on this board for best nyc street food. I like 46th between 5th and 6th avenue - Moshe's falafel as well as the asian fish sandwich cart - can't remember the name.

Visiting from NYC

I'm going to be vacationing in Montreal with SO at the end of May and would love some recommendations from local foodies. We're very adventurous eaters and are open to all cuisines. However, it would be nice to focus on things that we can't get in New York City (a very difficult task ) or things that are likely to be better in Montreal than in New York (French food?). Pricewise we'd love some options in the cheap eats, mid-range, and medium-high range. Any suggestions you have would be hugely appreciated. Thanks in advance. See you in a couple weeks.
