Dining out with a new baby

i agree with the other posts, you can bring a newborn most places especially if you go earlier. i took my newborn to neptune oyster...sometimes you've got to take care of your cravings. :)

check out the family restaurant 'full moon' in cambridge in a couple of months for some decent food where you won't feel self conscious.

congrats!

The Chocolate Tarte, a bakery in Somerville

stopped by yesterday and had a mini red velvet cupcake, a mini chocolate cupcake and the gluten-free blood orange tart. was very impressed by the gluten-free tart as it was moist, not grainy or crumbly, and it was very tasty. she adds a little bit of cinnamon to her buttercream frosting for the red velvet cupcake. although i prefer a cream cheese frosting for red velvets, this was a nice variation.
she mentioned that she only makes the cakes, brownies and cookies there. the pastries (pecan rolls, croissants etc) are from iggy's.
i look forward to trying more of her gluten-free creations.

Vietnamese Fresh Wrapper Spring Rolls

Oh how I miss Lemongrass and the Tamarind Tree rolls at TT...

Thanks for the input everyone. I'm trying to find a place where I can special order quite a few for a party. The tofu rolls at the little spot next to the jewelry store on Washington St. are not bad, but are not the greatest either.
I would make them myself, but I won't have the time for chopping/prep.

Vietnamese Fresh Wrapper Spring Rolls

Any opinions on the best in the city?

Trina's Starlight Lounge to replace the Abbey

I just walked by and there were people inside having drinks and such. Perhaps it is a private party, but exciting nonetheless!

fresh mangosteen Boston!

mmm...thank you for the report! i can't wait!!

Eastern Standard - What Should I Drink?

a bit late as well...there is a drink on the non-alcoholic list called the sophisticated lady, but you can order a sophisticated madame and it will have gin (or vodka if you prefer) added to it. it's has some cranberry, cucumber and a little bit of a salty taste (some disagree with me here, but i swear i taste it). it sounds boring, but it's really delicious and delightful.

Quintessential Beer Geek Spots in Seattle...

yes BPP is also a must. many tasty beers on tap. mmm...
there is a cool little place in pike's market called the 'white horse', but they only have a couple of beers to choose from. i just like the ambiance from time to time.

Quintessential Beer Geek Spots in Seattle...

the stumbling monk, brouwers, prost (or any of the other spots he has),...i don't live in seattle anymore, but when i go back, i always go the the stumbling monk.

Kolbeh of Kabob is open!!!

We went there last weekend and ordered mirza ghasemi (eggplant, tomato, garlic dish), kashk-e-badamjan (smokey eggplant puree), beef sultani (one skewer of ground beef and one skewer of sirlion), kubideh kabob (ground lamb/beef skewers), jujeh kakob (chicken breast and thigh skewers), kolbeh salad (i think that was the name),and tahdig.
They also gave us some hummus before we ordered!
whew.
The hummus was solid, the mirza ghasemi had too much tomato paste for my liking, the kashk-e-bademjan was pretty good. it had a nice smokey flavor that was nicely accented with dried mint. The salad was much larger than I had expected, and it was fresh and delicious. The sirloin was a little bland, and not as juicy as it could have been. The kubideh was pretty tasty. The best kabob for me was the chicken. It was flavorful, juicy and a beautiful saffron color. Be sure to order the rice with the berberries if you like a little tartness with your food.
I would skip the tahdig.
Unfortunately, the ovens were not ready for the fresh bread, so we'll definitely be back for that!
They were very friendly and kind, so I wish them lots of luck. I am happy there is an Iranian restaurant in our area now.

[PDX] Source for Brazilian groceries, farinha, etc?

just kidding...you are in portland. sorry.

[PDX] Source for Brazilian groceries, farinha, etc?

there used to be a little brazilian grocery store/travel agency around 52nd (?) and university ave in the u-district. there is also a place off I-405 between kirkland and redmond. i left seattle over a year ago, so it might not be there anymore...

Thai Restaurant Gift Cert. for my Boss!

I searched the boards and found that Brown Sugar, Rod Dee, Khao Sarn, and Dok Bua are some of the top Thai restaurants in the city. Which one (does not have to be from this list) would be really good and a little more formal than Dok Bua? This is a Bday gift for our boss. Thanks in advance!

Best Korean food in Boston?

There is a good Korean BBQ restaurant in Medford called Chung Ki Wa. My Korean friend who grew up in L.A. said it is one of the better BBQ places in the Boston Area. The meat was tender and flavorful, however the portions were a bit smaller than I am used to in L.A. Good spicy soon do boo and there was also a great assortment of delicious panchan, which is key in my opinion.
I have heard that New Jang Su BBQ is also good in Burlington, but I have not been there myself.

Red Velvet Cake in Boston-Cambridge

the spotted apron bakery across from mgh on cambridge st. has red velvet cupcakes. they are not bad, i like that they use a marscapone cheese frosting.

i haven't been yet, but i would bet that kickass cupcakes in somerville has them as well.

Iranian grocery stores in boston area?

thanks for your suggestions! headed to arax and found most of what i needed (and lots of things i didn't need as well!).

Iranian grocery stores in boston area?

Just moved to boston and was wondering if there are any Iranian grocery stores in the area? I am looking for things like unripe grapes, dried lemons, sabzi (greens for stews and kuku's), kashk (whey)...
I searched the board and only found references to a bakery in watertown, and restaurants: lala rokh in beacon hill, moby dick's in boston and molana in watertown.
thanks in advance!

Must visit places for seattle

when i was living in l.a., i would often find myself craving:
-a sandwich from paseo's in fremont
-roti canai at malay satay hut (the one in redmond is actually better than the one in seattle)
-sushi (maneki is good for a cheaper option)
-vietnamese food (green leaf and tamarind tree)
-dahlak on rainier for eritrean food
-szechuan chef (in bellevue)
-matt's in the market

not that they don't have these sorts of things in l.a., seattle just does them soooo well!

Ortiz Anchovies in Seattle?

the spanish table in downtown seattle.
www.spanishtable.com
however, i'm sure some mercados on the outskirts of seattle sell them as well...

Vancouver B.C. for 3 days-must eats?

Heading to vancouver for a couple of days and am interested in your suggestions. Specifically, Indian, Caribbean, Sushi, Chinese (however, i am open to anything!).
I am staying downtown, but am willing to drive anywhere...love both fancy places and holes-in the wall...just want the good stuff!
Already on the list of places to consider: Tojo's, Kintaro for ramen, Lolita, Guu, Octopus Garden, Fisherman's Terrace (in Richmond), Vij's, Mondo Gelato...
Thanks in advance for your help!

Birthday Lunch for my 21 year old sister in Seattle, need recs!

i second le pichet. has wonderful french bistro food, a lovely atmosphere, with attentive, yet non-smothering service. and...a great wine list. loved the salad with sardines, the brandade, the gratin lyonnais, and the escargot. flavorful, rich and fantastic!

[SEA] homesick for LA ramen!!!!

takohashi (sp?) in the international district on jackson. it's where i always go for ramen in seattle. they also have delicious bacon fried rice! yum! if you are ever in vancouver b.c., there is amazing ramen at this little hole in the wall called 'kintaro' on denman. sometimes i just drive up there to eat ramen and walk around and come back that evening...i'm pretty sure you can only get pork (or veggie) ramen there.

Seattle Cakes

i second whole foods. they have excellent ingredients (free-range eggs etc...), and a good variety of beautiful cakes. at the roosevelt store, there is an excellent chocolate mousse cake-greg's, i think it's called. and an amazing cheesecake too!

Under $5 in Seattle?

pagliacci's pizza

Nigella's Bread with Warm milk comfort food

my dad eats this all the time. irish-italian brought up in the states. his ultimate comfort food.

chocolates in Seattle

yes! theo's. fiori chocolates(based out of the eastside), and lesley's. all lovely chocolates. fiori has some amazing flavor combos. lesley's has the best salt caramels i've ever tasted. theo's also has wonderful flavors, are certified organic and are one of the only chocolatiers that make chocolates from scratch.

Korean Food in Seattle?

hoosonyi is known for it's hot pot soups (soon doo boo?). seafood pancake is a bit oily but delicious. there is a dish with fish, tofu, scallions and a spicy sauce that is wonderful! you will see a lot of people ordering it, and you can ask your server what it is. the little dishes (panchan?)that accompany the meals are some of the best you can find at any restaurant around seattle. i have yet to try mirak in fed way or kawon yet. bcd tofu house is pretty good...i love the rice they serve there! a bonus that it's open 24 hours. :)

Red Velvet Cake

i'm pretty sure you can buy a liquid natural red food coloring (made from beets) at wholefoods market or any natural market that will work fine. it might not be as deep of a red though.

Good eats in Reading

Thank you for the suggestions-they sound great! Will definitely try them out asap. :)
