hosting a casual outdoor engagement party

i'd love some advice for planning this party. my friends who are getting married, for whom i am throwing this party for 30, requested mediterranean. so, lamb and chicken shish kebabs, green salad, tabouli, hummus, etc.

my question is: can i grill the shish kebabs ahead of time and serve them room temp, or should i grill them during the party? will they dry out if i do it ahead? i won't have the time to grill during the party, i have friends helping but...not sure if i can count on anyone to do the grilling. thoughts?

crusty soil

i built a raised bed and had a load of loam/compost mix (2:1) delivered. filled the bed, planted lettuce and carrots, and now the soil is crusty. the seedlings are struggling to break through, and breaking if they make it. what to do?

i want to cook a pork shoulder this weekend, pernil style. all the recipes call for 6-8 pounds, but i can only find cuts that are 2-3 pounds. will it work with a smaller cut? how do i adapt the recipe?

6 month old baby, single mom, want fast healthy meals

i used to love to cook. but with a baby and full time job, i can barely tie my shoes. i don't even have an afternoon to cook a lot of stuff and freeze, unless i hire a babysitter. any ideas for me and my crazy busy life?

you know that plaza with the fountain right next to venda ravioli? there's 4 different cafes serving food outdoors, venda, costanino's across from venda, dolce vita, etc. their menus all look similar and are pricey. which has the best food? i'm jonesing to eat outside but not into mediocre.
