60th Birthday Afternoon Tea Party on Long Island North Shore?

QueenPeach, we did not end up going to Lady Anne's- the high tea party was too hard to pull off due to location. We ended up having a really lovely brunch party instead at Diane's Trattoria in Roslyn village- it was terrific, but of course not the afternoon tea we originally envisioned. Enjoy your shower planning!

Loved Ibiza- What's next Meigas or Sabor?

Sabor is in New Haven- there are actually two restaurant concepts in one space (Bespoke is the other) with separate menus, but you can order off of either menu. The Sabor menu is Latin influenced and the dishes we tried were terrific. The space is gorgeous, atmosphere trendy and fun, and the service was great.

Loved Ibiza- What's next Meigas or Sabor?

Thanks for the tips- we ended up trying Sabor first which was terrific (chic atmosphere and delicious, well composed plates to match). We then tried Meigas and had a similar situation to which you described. The restaurant was half empty, and dishes appeared without the ingredients with which they were billed (olive oil ice cream on a tuna appetizer was nowhere to be seen, salmon with white almond/grape gazpacho came instead over a diced potato salad with no taste of gazpacho at all). When we asked the waitress where the ingredients we thought were to accompany the dishes were, we were curtly told that they were in fact on the plate, which seemed a bit strange. Regardless of the ingredient swaps, we enjoyed our appetizers and mains very much. The one big misstep was the chocolate souffle dessert which was instead a very overdone and tough warm chocolate cake and which was strangely served over a bed of cocoa rice crispies to a very untasty effect. We also noticed several tables around us receiving complementary tiny dessert sample plates which we were not so nicely omitted from. The food overall was very good, but we found that the not so gracious service combined with the very average aesthetic surroundings detracted from the dining experience. Ibiza really felt like a special place while we didn't feel that Meigas shared the same magic.

Breakfast in Hoboken/West New York

Don't miss 'La Isla' at 104 Washington St. in Hoboken for a great inexpensive Cuban breakfast. They have delicious omelettes/sides among other choices and terrific iced cafe con leche. It is a low key community place and nice to grab a seat at the counter to enjoy your meal.

Loved Ibiza- What's next Meigas or Sabor?

Looking for a delicious birthday dinner spot- we tried Ibiza in New Haven recently and loved it. I'd almost go back there again but I have been reading about Meigas and Sabor and wonder how they compare to Ibiza. The menus for both places look great although reviews for Meigas seem a bit mixed. Any thoughts for which to try next?

Tips for Cooking with Thai Palm Sugar?

Tips for Cooking with Thai Palm Sugar?

I bought a tub of Thai palm sugar and am having trouble figuring out the best way to actually get it out of the tub in order to measure it for recipes. I thought it was stuck together in a brown-sugar like way in granules, but it is more like a solid block of sugar. The only way I've been able to get any out is to scrape a fork over it to remove a bit at a time. Any tips for working with this?

Believe Jane on W. Houston has it- I have had the Benedict Jane which is actually with a crabcake and it was delicious, so I would imagine the lobster benedict would be great too.

60th Birthday Afternoon Tea Party on Long Island North Shore?

Thanks for the tips ladies- I'll look into these places.

60th Birthday Afternoon Tea Party on Long Island North Shore?

Does anyone know of a nice tea salon that hosts private parties for afternoon tea on the N. Shore of Long Island? We are trying to organize an intimate 60th Birthday party for my stepmother and thought this would be something she would like. The afternoon tea at the Garden City hotel looks very nice but ideally it would be great to have a smaller venue of a real tea salon where we could potentially rent the place out. We'll probably have around 30 people. Thank you for any ideas-

Has anyone successfully cooked Risotto in their rice cooker?

Yes! I made a great risotto in my rice cooker w/white wine, chicken stock, and parmesan cheese. I used the guidelines in the instruction book that came with the rice cooker. It was super easy and the results were delicious.

Any recs for finding Thai ingredients in Fairfield County?

Terrific- I can't wait to stock up this weekend.

Hoboken or Jersey City Help

I would recommend Amanda's in Hoboken. It is in a lovely townhouse with a few beautifully decorated rooms of different sizes. The food is delicious and presented elegantly on eclectic china plates. The service is always impeccable. I think this would make a great spot for a special rehearsal dinner (I can vouch for it personally as we had our wedding dinner party there :) ) .

Any recs for finding Thai ingredients in Fairfield County?

That sounds just perfect- thank you both so much for the tip!

Raw food restaurants in NYC

Angelica Kitchen usually has a couple of raw food dishes in addition to their splendid salads. It is much more affordable than Pure Food and Wine which while delicious is extremely expensive.

Ideas for Brunch in Stamford or Greenwich?

Thank you both- we ended up at Palomino in Greenwich which had the lovely atmosphere and brunch choices we were seeking. We had great fritattas and have our eye on the oatmeal pancakes for next time.

Ideas for Brunch in Stamford or Greenwich?

Seeking delicious Sunday brunch- hoping for a perfect cappucino, yummy egg/pancake dishes, and of course cocktails. Already done Citi Limits and Thataway Cafe- anyone know of someplace 'nicer' for a great relaxed brunch in the area? Thanks for any suggestions-

Amanda's Early Dinner menu Hoboken?

I have been to Amanda's many times- the early dinner menu is definitely a steal. The food is very nice and you won't leave hungry. The dishes on the early dinner menu are less complex than the dishes on the regular menu but they are still delicious and Amanda's atmosphere is truly lovely. They have specials on bottles of wine too- Enjoy your dinner.

Lunch in Hoboken

La Isla (104 Washington) for fantastic Cuban- do not miss the black beans and yellow rice. Sushi House (155 1st St.) for very good/fresh sushi lunch specials. Luca Brasi's (100 Park) for great sandwiches w/fresh mozzarella.

Varka in Ramsey?

Try Varka! We went last Sat. night and loved our meal- everything we tried was absolutely delicious. In fact, my husband and I agreed that it was the best restaurant we've tried in awhile- we can't wait to go back. Our waiter was great and recommended which fish to try (there were four of us, so we got a good sampling- all were excellent). We also tried the saganaki fried cheese and shrimp santorini appetizers, and the donuts and Greek yogurt for dessert (all were sooo good). Nice wine list too.

Gluten free cakes, cupcakes, or cookies in Fairfield/Westchester County?

I really like the gluten-free baked goods that Whole Foods carries (there is a decent selection in the Greenwich store) if you are looking for cookies/pie/etc. They are the products with the 'Gluten Free Bakehouse' label. They also have a couple of other brands with different dessert products in the same section that are gluten free.

Columbian yucca-flour cheese bread in Port Chester?

Great- Thank you both for the info.!!

Columbian yucca-flour cheese bread in Port Chester?

I had delicious bread at a Latin restaurant in the city last night. The waiter told me it was a cheese bread made with yucca flour- it was truly addictive. Does anyone know if this type of bread can be found in Port Chester? Thanks for any leads-

Healthy Recommendations All Around Town

There are lots of great healthy options in the city that will suit your search...I like Angelica Kitchen very much- fresh/healthly food that is nicely composed (especially the specials). It is one of the health food pioneer restaurants in NYC and definitely worth visiting. I would also recommend 'Gobo' on 6th Ave. which is an Asian/vegetarian restaurant w/an organic juice bar (especially fun to split lots of 'small plates' tapas style here). If you want to splurge a little, 'Pure Food and Wine' is an upscale raw vegan restaurant in Irving Place w/really creative raw food. The food is very light and delicious. If the weather is nice there is a pretty garden out back. Uptown by the Met, you may want to try 'Candle Cafe'- on 3rd Ave. on the UES. Great salads and main dishes- it is vegetarian and mostly organic (esp. yummy desserts here). Happy dining!
