Oliveto's Truffle Dinners

We went last night- Friday- and I would have to agree that the truffles were not as fragrant as I remember from years past. In addition, we had a horrible problem with our bill. Among our appetizers we ordered 2 farm eggs, and when they came I specifically asked for 1 gram split between the 2. Then, when our entrees arrived, I asked for 'just one' shaved on top, and I stopped him early. My dining companions (3) also asked for 'one'. I assumed we had made it clear that we each wanted one gram added to our dish. When the bill arrived, we had been charged for 29 grams. We questioned this, and explained that we thought we had been very specific about our requests. They were really nice about it, and actually knocked 1/2 the truffle cost off of our bill, but if anyone is going tonight, watch out for that.

That being said, the meal was fantastic. I had the sausage with endive and parmesan fondue, which I loved, but the winner was the pork scaloppini. Two at my table ordered it, and I wound up wishing I had as well. The farm eggs were delicious, easy to share, and a great dish to experience the shaved truffles on.

Is it just me, or has Oliveto gone downhill in the past few years? It's still one of my favorite restaurants, but now I feel like they always play it safe. Less innovation, and there's just a certain 'something' missing.

Berkeley - Sabuy Sabuy II

I love this place too, and I am glad it's getting some attention- I go in a couple times a month, and there's rarely many people there (although they may do a good take-out business). The green curry is wonderful, and they do a great miang kam, which I have a hard time finding at thai restaurants (best ordered if dining in). The owner is really nice, and will spend time chatting with you if you're interested. Word of warning- to my sensitive palate, dishes run hot- medium was a little strong for me, but mild is just fine.

Best place in Berkeley to eat crab tonight?

Mama Lan's on Gilman. I t's sauted in a sauce, and kinda pricey, but really good. Not sure if they have it right now- you could call and ask.

Eccolo - Huh??

I agree- Oliveto does the same thing, but better. Sometimes Eccolo has nice appetizers, if you want to sit at the bar for a quick drink and snack. Although I like Cafe Rouge's atmosphere better.

Chinese donut in East Bay?

Thanks for the links- I'll try China Village. Is this something that's available only during the day, or could I get it at night, too?

Chinese donut in East Bay?

I was working near Clement st. in SF this summer and fell in love with the chinese donut and sweet bean milk at Taiwan restaurant. Anyone know a good place to get it in the East Bay, preferably Berkeley or Albany? Thanks!

Greasy spoon italian in Berkeley?

Lol! That's exactly how I feel about Giovanni's- it would be perfect if the food was good. I'll try Lo Coco's. Is Bucci's that place in Emeryville?
Thanks for the recs.

Dinner recommendation, downtown Oakland?

We like Breads of India. Also, Le Cheval is supposed to be really good, but is usually crowded and noisy.

Greasy spoon italian in Berkeley?

We are looking for a very lowbrow yet delicious italian place in the Berkeley/Oakland/Albany area. Anybody have a good hole in the wall they'd like to share?

I second the Brannon's rec- we eat there every time we go. For breakfast, I like the Sarafornia cafe.

Valentine's Reservations: Skates or Steaks?

Oh god please don't go to Skates- what about that place in Jack London Square? Or The Dead Fish? They're pretty good for steaks. My favorite steakhouse is House of Prime Rib in SF.

Good place in Berkeley area w/out kids

We go to Ajanta on Solano once or twice a month. Great indian food, warm service, and a cozy atmosphere.

Fresh truffle butter

Went to Cafe Rouge tonight and the meat market now has fresh house-made truffle butter. Really good. Won't be around for long.

What the heck is open on Christmas day???

Went to the Claremont, had a decent burger and fries, and a great pomegranate cosmo. Walked down college- what happened to Buttercup? Looks like a different restaraunt there now.

What the heck is open on Christmas day???

Thanks for the suggestions. I found a bottle of V. Sattui red to tide me over while I wait for my delayed luggage to be delivered from SFO (grrrr!) then my sister and I will head up Solano and down Shattuck. Maybe all the lost xmas souls (or grinches) should meet up somewhere!

What the heck is open on Christmas day???

My family is also postponing Christmas- I'd like to get some grocery shopping done (?!). Does anyone know of any grocery stores open in the Berkeley area? I called the Safeways on Solono and Shattuck but no answer. It would also be nice to get a quick bite and glass of wine but I'm probably out of luck. Any suggestions besides Sutter Home and Cheetos from the liquor store?

Truffled salt

They usually have it at the Pasta Shop in Berkeley on Fourth st. Sometimes they have a sample out to try.
