good Mexican food near Brea

Sometimes I dont understand chowhounders, El Farolito is over rated.Ive been there 3 times now and its always been mediocre. El Cholo is even worse although "nicer". I don't mean to be so negative but I'm picky with mexican food (being Texican)

Good rec's in Whittier, La Mirada, La Habra area

I frequent in no particular order:
la habra- (off beach) ricardo's el ranchito- love the albondiga soup
el taco nazo (off of beach)- best fish and shrimp tacos anywhere. no debate.
imperial burger - for a great burger and or chili cheese fry (off of imperial)
molcasalsa? - sometimes for something cheap, quick, and dirty. they're open 24 hours.
La mirada- kings garden has good chinese, it's off of beach(maybe buena park)
northwoods inn- the salad and cheese bread are a meal all their own. good steaks, etc.
marquez mexican- off of rosecrans has pretty tasty mexican food. i was suprised as it feels like it is in the middle of no where. good salsa's, rice, beans, taste like mom made them.
whittier- lascari's - I've liked everything i've gotten there. love the potato gnocchi, calzones, lasagna, marinated artichokes, etc,
chalio's - for birria in the morning, fresh handmade tortillas and a cinnimony coffee.

I'd advise against ambrose pizza. it's awful. taste like card board. kinda like a mom and pop pizza loca taste.

Casual Mexican by Biola University

I'd go with ricardo's el ranchito also. their albondiga soup is fantastic. it's a sit down restaraunt though. pretty low key though. good suggestion on the chips above. Yeah biola is La Mirada.

Pambazo - Tacomiendo and elsewhere

i've never had it with fish. i think the more traditional pambazo is with potatoes and chorizo drippings. that's what you'll find in most places that sell it. i get mine in the oc at el montezuma in orange.
i always thought it was street food from puebla or mexico city. can't confirm it though. I also know that in vercruz a pambazo is a different kind of sandwich with beans etc. i imagine it varies from state to state in mexico.

absolutely. tortas ahogadas. that's were i go also.it's across the street from the northgate supermarket. make sure they fully dip it in the hot sauce, not just the regular tomato sauce or you won't get the full effect. you'll get tears running down your cheek, your face will go numb, but when it's all over you'll get the "feeling".

Israeli-Style Falafel

awesome. it has french fries. i'd consider that more authentic israeli. i lived off of these in haifa and jerusalem one summer. i'll have to check it out.

The Olive Pit olives

On a trip up north I stopped at the Olive Pit in Corning,CA. I took home several jars of olives. Opened up the jar of deep south cajun style olives and i fell in love. For days i would come home from work head to the fridge and throw one in my mouth. I'd let it sit there, sucking it's "meal unto itself" complex tanginess. I quickly ran out of the quart that i bought. Life hasn't been the same since...
Well that last part was an exaggeration but damn they were good.
I know you can order them online. http://www.olivepit.com/acb/Deep-Sout...
Does anyone know where i could find them here la/oc? I called the store in Corning and they told me no one in southern ca distributed them.I 'm trying to avoid paying $15 shipping for 2 quarts. Thanks.

Recommendations in Artesia or Cerritos?

I've been there too and thought i was gonna fall into the water when i first walked in.. It was very good, moderately priced.
it used to be the Annapurna Express. minus the water and decorations. Now AE moved next door and replaced the Masala Bowl. I liked AE even more but now it's just a counter with ready made veggie food for take out. there's some tables though. oh well.

Juan Pollo

there's one here in La Mirada on the corner of imperial hwy and valley view. it's a very yummy bird, not very spiced if you like that. the sides are pretty mediocre though.

Best Gumbo in LA/OC in bulk?

The Creole Chef in Inglewood is also very good. I've had it and it's great. They got oyster poboy's there too...
I've heard good things about the Bayou Grill.

Harold and Belle's would definately cost you a small fortune. I thought the gumbo was very good but too expensive.

Fish Taco DEATHMATCH: TBE vs. El Taco Nazo

nice description there. although i think ETN is even cheaper than TBE. so you can throw that into the equation.
yup i always get the shrimp at ETN. personally I've never had a better one. not even in Mexico. that ETN is the best location i've been to.
(I have a dirty little secret though. There is one in santa fe springs attached to a bowling alley that has these cubed cucumbers swimming in hot sauce and lime next to the salsa's. they're spicy even for me. think of them as an appetizer. the place is more of a dive though.)

ISO of King Taco Salsa in OC

if you really mean it, burning hot, you can try the salsa they use to dip the torta's @ Tortas Ahogadas. it's a truck on mortimer between 5th and 4th in santa ana. it's across the street from northgate super market. get a torta too. they're unbelivable...if you like crying get it fully dipped... it's sounds silly but it's somewhat oragasmic when you finish one.

El Taco Nazo

I love that Taco Nazo location. Yeah people have some fascination with TBE. These are cheaper and better. I go to that location regularly. there is also one in santa fe springs attached to a bowling ally that also has little cubed cucumbers in really hot sauce and lemon.
those peppers you are referring to are deep fried with alot of salt and pepper added. they're so tasty. you just eat them by themselves.
