Carolina's versus Olive and Ivy
i'm with you, jk. places that are scene above food are hardly chow-worthy. i can't believe this thread has dragged on this long. what next, someone will post longingly about pink taco?
the last time i had a memorable meal (in a good way) at a fox concepts place was at taneko, when the place first opened, oh and the greene house, before michael stebner left...
since then, it's a big ole 'meh'. sam fox is good at what he does. and what he does is make bright shiny scenes. it's not about the food.
Digestif moving into former Sea Saw location (PHX)
i hope they can make it. i really like digestif, and payton is great. their sunday cooking classes are fun. or were fun :(
Making a list for top chow mexican recommendations (PHX)
i love the chips and salsa and america's, they are top notch. they have 3 or 4 different kinds of salsa, give 'em all a try.
Where to eat near Heard Museum, Phoenix
richardson's or dick's would be great!! i love their brunches and you can't beat the food.
Where to eat near Heard Museum, Phoenix
i would heartily recommend gallo blanco. it's a wonderful spot. you'll have to walk a couple of blocks from a lightrail station. honestly, the garden in august? after walking around? you are either crazy or incredibly game ;) and i live here!!
Phx: Top Pizza Joints
the ones i tried were dead ringers. same size, same shape, same thickness, same dough, same texture, same sauce. which, if you think about it makes sense. parlor is the business started by the son of the nello's empire
Phx: Top Pizza Joints
i concur - redendo's makes a great pizza. and marinara. and garlic knots. i like them alot
Phx: Top Pizza Joints
i'll be the lone dissenter. it was meh..its like nello's pizza in a wood oven - way too thick of a crust for that method, i think. not a fan
why'd my pasta go wonky?
i used all purpose :( i'll look for italian 00 for next time....
and now i'm sure i didn't salt the water enough..
thank ou for the help!!
why'd my pasta go wonky?
got it..i'm glad to know i didn't overwork the dough..
it sounds like i didn't use nearly enough salt (about 3/4 a tablespoon) and i put it in when i put the water on to boil. i did let it cook til it floated to the top. but now i'm wondering if maybe i didn't cook it long enough. i'm not sure what gluggy means, but the pasta did taste a wee bit chewy. so it looks like cooking longer might be it?
is it a good idea to salt the pasta itself? or what about adding olive oil? is that asking for trouble??
why'd my pasta go wonky?
hi,
i made pasta with the recipe from the pioneer woman cooks website.
we had : 2 cups of flour and 4 eggs. they came from my friends chickens, and they were tiny. it didn't seem like enough moisture so we added one more egg.
we did everything by hand, and i don't think we overworked the dough. we let it rest about half an hour, rolled it out, cut it and cooked it for about 2 mins.
the taste? bland, and a tiny bit gummy.
what did i do wrong? should the recipe have salt? i was surprised there was none in the recipe.
Fuego Bistro - Phoenix
thanks for the update, ziggylu!! i haven't been there in about a year, but ive always enjoyed each visit. i'm happy to hear they're still doing a good job!!
New "Twilight Farmers Market" in Glendale AZ
wow!!! i barely finished lunch and that still makes me hungry ;)
New "Twilight Farmers Market" in Glendale AZ
np, happy to help. nothing makes me sadder than having to compost veg i couldn't get to fast enough from the farmers market. its such a waste!!
New "Twilight Farmers Market" in Glendale AZ
you're tempting me to drive to glendale :D
i love those turnips from maya - a word of advise on storing them: they go kind of limpish really quickly. my solution is to trim the ends, and store them in water..as long as you change it every couple of days, they'll be tasty for a couple of weeks!! not that they'll last that long ;)
Great Food, Fun atmosphere near the Biltmore (PHX)
i love barrio cafe, but it doesn't take reservations, and i don't think the op really wanted a big wait....
shoot now you are making me hungry for their conchinita ;)
Great Food, Fun atmosphere near the Biltmore (PHX)
honestly for a no hassle getting in and out, no blaring music kind of night i wouldn't recommend either postino/lgo or richardsons. both are going to be packed, both will have a wicked wait (assuming you can't get a res, which still might be a reality at this late time), and both are loud, loud, loud.
if loud and a wait doesn't bother you, i'd say stick with richardsons, because the food is great, and unless you're from the southwest, you probably won't find something similar where you live. have your concierge make the reservations for you, they'll be able to work some magic getting you in. lets just call it an insiders tip ;)
we just had our girls nite out at j&g steakhouse at the phoencian.. ok, its a chain, but a damn good one ;) loved the food, loved the stellar view of phoenix from the patio, and its not too far from you.
i'd say noca, too for sure. i'm not a big fan of tarbells, and chelsea's kitchen i haven't been too in the last 6 months so i can't say if it's as loud as it used to be.
just my random thoughts
phx - crooked sky farms last day at the dt farmers market
small clarification. boxed greens isn't really a csa tho - its more of a produce delivery service.
phx - crooked sky farms last day at the dt farmers market
they used to be there, last time they were right by the meat shop, home to the best pork ever ;)
i love the arcadia farm ladies..some most excellent citrus!!! and the mother/daughter farmers right next to them are excellent too :)
i miss orme ranch, i thought they had the best beef but they haven't been back in months :(
phx - crooked sky farms last day at the dt farmers market
the refugee farmers were there, and will be there regularly :)
. i bought some ultra tasty cantalope like melons there. yuuummmy!!!
phx - crooked sky farms last day at the dt farmers market
hi there,
just a quick report. at first i was sad when i heard that crooked sky farms wasn't going to be at the market again after today, and then the farmer told me why.
turns out they have 18 acres near southern and 40th street. their farm wraps around a walmart that is there. and starting next week, they'll have a farm stand that is open and they'll sell fresh picked items directly off of the farm.
he said the prices would be cheaper than the market, too.
i was excited to hear a farm stand is opening up again in an area where the farms have been decimated, but sad to hear they were leaving.
i'm sad to see them go, but i truly wish them well.
sea saw's farewell omakase (scottsdale)
last nite a friend and i went to sea sea saw's goodbye weekend. holy moly!!! saw ccccl111 (is that the right number of c's?) and i am jack's brain and both of their wives. we were all standing at the bar and oooohing and ahhhing at all of the fabulous things - luscious tomatoes with fressh mozz and shaved grilled octapus. mushrooms steamed in parchment with noodles that was to die for. pork on rice buns. soft shell crab sandwhiches. and wave after wave after wave of amazing fresh fish, too many to name. and all for 35 bucks. we had processeco at 8 bucks a glass.
it was bittersweet. the food was amazing, the quality sublime. the whole point was to clear out the food because sea saw closes tonite. i'm so sorry that sea saw wasn't able to make it. i am happy chef nobuo is looking at a new venture in central, and dare i say it, downtown phoenix. that makes me happy. but its never a proud moment when such a landmark closes. its obvious chef loves what he does, and its clear that he has major skills.
i was glad i was able to enjoy his send off, and i look forward to his new place. but i am giving them a moment of silence this afternoon. farewell, sea saw. we hardly knew you.
HELP! Looking for Good Breakfast in Phoenix
if you liked pischkes, try local breeze downtown. its alot of the same pischke's peeps and recipes, including the fabled fire island eggs.
i love local breeze (in palatte's spot, behind cibo). huge 4 egg omlettes, good coffee, nice people!!!
Parlor (PHX)
i hear they are getting rid of the chairs. one rumor is the 'real'chairs weren't ready yet and these are loaners. i can't wait for that :D
i would go back as well. some things on the menu have real promise and for the price, i was surprised at how reasonable it was.
if you figure out what is missing, let me know..its driving me nuts that i can't figure it out but it feels so close to being special i just wish a tweak or two would come so it could be....
Parlor (PHX)
color me the lone dissenter ;) i thought the prices were great, the food is pretty good, but over all something about it just isn't 'special'. i can't put my finger on anything in particular.
the crust was good, but too thick for woodfired pizza. it was like nello's, only woodfired. which makes sense given the family ties to nello's, but i prefer much thinner
the beet salad was tasty, but the beets were an addition, not a feature (there were maybe 5 pieces of beet in the whole salad), and the goat cheese was a small hockey puck size covered in crushed nuts. thats a WHOLE lot of cheese for such a small salad. normally i'm like 'sweet more goat cheese' but here it seemed in congruous. i thought some tweaking was in order.
the bruschetta was pretty good
the fritto misto was GREAT - the rock shrimp were the best thing about the whole meal...
and i thought the desert menu needed more chocolate. out of 5 or 6 deserts, one was chocolate cake. one was tiramisu. one was a choice of gelato, one flavor among many being chocolate.
and the chairs are appallingly bad. i HATED them with a burning passion. i went with 2 mid-century furniture dealers and we all be-moaned the liberal usage of carved frilly grandma style wood. one person said 'it was like cracker barrel had a clearance sale'
i'd go back. for the prices you'd be crazy not to. but the building is so cool, and the fresh herbs growing outside are such a treat, i just found myself wanting things to be better. nearly everything just needed a tweak to make it special.
Good Pizza Near Esplanade (PHX)?
yipes!!!! i think i'd rather have delivery pizza from zpizza than nypd. it couldn't be less like ny pizza. i think slices off mill is closer to ny pizza. and yes, i used to live there (nyc, i mean)
PIZZERIA BIANCO
they do take reservations for parties of 6 and larger. its definitely something you should try since you live here. it really is a special place
Anniversary Celebration on a Sunday? (PHX)
how about these - rancho pinot or digestif? and of course noca
Hurry4Curry Phoenix - very good fast-food Indian
isn't bhangra and bollywood just more cliche tho?
