Looking for fresh mussels in Queens

Can anyone help me find some good, meaty, fresh mussels in Queens? Price is not a factor but quality obviously is.

It's a hit or miss with the Asian markets in Flushing.

Thanks!

In the mood for Thai...(the best thai that is)

Sripraphai or Chao Thai

FLUSHING DIM SUM: what are your fave places

I tried Guang Zhou Restaurant aka Perfect Team Corporation last w/e. Yes, they do not have great variety, but who needs all that when the few major ones they have are all excellent.

I had the best sticky rice in lotus leaf there. Juicy, full of flavor and it came in smaller pieces of 3 (usually they're 2 larger pieces) which helped the flavor.

tonight: italian in queens - sapori d'ischia or uva rara?

The 2 are totally unrelated. I personally prefer Uvarara for its quaint decor, friendly staff and the mom&pops feel. And yes, the short ribs are to die for. Great little bites and good priced wines.

Sushi in Forest Hills/Rego Park

norah, have you tried Yasu? I agree the other sushi places in FH suck - in fact, most sushi places in Queens are bad, but thankfully, the same cannot be said about Yasu.

Review - Casa de Elian (Forest Hills)

I hear that they're only open on the weekends now. Very sad because their food is pretty good.

What's up with momofuku these days...?

Yeah, you can get much better ramen for less than that in the vicinity.
I went tonight and I was extremely disappointed.

Kimchi was very salty and over-ripe. Both the pork and momo ramen were also extremely salty. The pork belly was also so very salty. I had to poor a glass of water into my ramen to eat it w/o gagging. Yes, ramen is typically salty, but this was beyond that. My mouth is still very dry 3 hours after the meal - that's how bad it was.

HELP!! In Forest Hills

The Latin Cubana Express has indeed gone downhill. The majority of their food is way too salty, perhaps the result of sitting in the heater too long. I've stopped going there all together.
I have no idea why people like Corfu so much. The place is mediocre at best. Their chicken is so dry and their falafel, even though it was just fried, was as hard as a rock. How do you mess up fried food?

I agree that FH lacks great food options. However, many people have the option to own cars in FH which gives us more flexibility in terms of dining options. We're a short ride away from places such as DB, Casa de Elian, La Tavernetta, Uvarara, La Fusta, Sripraphai, Sapori D'Ischia, Inti Raymi, Rincon Criollo, UFC, Mood, Chao Thai, Little Saigon, La Flor, High Pearl, Tournesol, etc.

I'll take the trade-off between lower real-estate/safe, quiet neighborhood and expensive, cramped, loud hood/better food anyday.

ISO good takeout sushi around Empire State Building

Hi, I recently started working at the Empire State Building and I have yet to find a decent sushi place. It doesn't have to be Nobu, but I'd like to find a fresh, edible and preferably real Japanese place that one can get take out from. Also, I don't want to spend an arm and a leg - hopefully under $15?

Am I asking for too much? There's gotta be something in the area. Now, I know about the Korean gimbap place on 32nd, but I'm looking for sushi and sashimi.

Please help out a sushi-lover that's been deprived of raw fish at work.

Upscale restaurants of Queens

DB Wine Bar MUST be on the list. Cafe on the Green? Oh God, please, say it ain't so.

Fried chicken in Woodside area

I second Peking Chicken. That place has been around FOREVER.
UFC is also excellent. And I do not beleive it's expensive at all, given its quality.

Bonfire Grill on Austin in Forest Hills?

Overall, it's received mediocre to bad reviews from locals. Here's the link. http://www.queenscentral.com/forums/topic.php?id=608

Uvarara (Middle Village, Queens) - worth visiting

Haven't tried their risotto, but their food was overall pretty good. I've been wanting to try their short ribs, but they ran out the night I went there.

Their wine list, although not extensive, appeared well constructed. The prices were not ridiculous like many in Manhattan.

Uvarara (Middle Village, Queens) - worth visiting

Went there for brunch today. They're open for brunch only on Sundays after 12PM.

Their brunch menu is hand-written on flattened brown paper bags (very cute) and lists a few items. You have a choice of eggs, omelettes, French toast or fruit salad. It sounds simple, but there were some fantastic ingredients and the potatoes were super yummy. Their coffee was very good as well.

I'd highly recommend this place to those in Queens if you have a car. Go for brunch, stop off at either Amish Market or TJs for some groceries and catch a flick on Metropolitan !

Steps from the F Train in Queens?

I must have misread the OP's post. My sincere apologies.

Vietnamese in Queens?

Being that you're in Maspeth, Little Saigon on Grand Avenue is probably closest to you. And lucky for you, the food is also excellent. It's in a very nondescript location near the fire station across from an Irish bar, on the first floor of a residential house. It is never too crowded and is cleaner than your average Vietnamese restaurant.

Steps from the F Train in Queens?

I think small h might be talking about the 75th Ave stop, not 74th Street. Although they're on the same line, they're ways apart. 75th Ave is Forest Hills and 74th Street is Jackson Heights.

Korean live octopus?

It's called san-nak-ji (산낙지).

San is "live" and Nakji is "octopus". Have fun.

Take-out in Forest Hills

Sgt. Garcia is atrocious. It is, by far, the worst Mexican I've ever had. Why anyone would go there when there's a better, cheaper alternative at 5 Burros, I cannot understand.

Latin Cabana Express, different from Cabana, does delivery for good Latin food.

Thai Pot also delivers.

Steak

For good Argentinean, consider La Fusta in Elmhurst. Their skirt steak and mixed grill are delicious and are very reasonably priced. Also, their wine selection, albeit limited compared to large Manhattan steak houses, is nicely priced.

Good Italian Restaurant in Forest Hills, Queens?

Stay away from all Italian on Austin and QB. How can I put this mildly.....they SUCK.

Getting treated... Chinese in Elmhurst?

One place not mentioned here is High Pearl next to Hong Kong Supermarket right off the Elmhurst subway station. They consistently deliver in terms of quality vs. price. They also have some weird stuff but you may need to order in Cantonese.

Asian Birthday Cake

Beard Papa's.....drool.

I'd kill for one of those places in Queens.

Best Sandwiches (Any Type) in Queens

joekarten,

It must have been an off day for Little Saigon. I've found all of their dishes to be above average to excellent, including their sandwiches. I'd give it another try. Their classic and chicken were very very good, IMHO.

I've never tried Thai Son's sandwiches. I've had their pho, which was good. Thanks for the heads up. I will give that a try :)

Just moved to Forest Hills--Looking for recommendations

Stop giving away this secret place !!!!! j/k

Yasu is absolutely wonderful. It's definitely not fancy at all, yet pricier and smaller portioned than other typical Chinese/Korean owned Queens Japanese places, but I like it that way so that only the true fish connoisseurs will seek it out.

In no specific order, these are the good places in FH:
DB Wine Bar
Nick's pizza
Dee's pizza
Latin Cabana Express
Pinang
Thai Pot

great cakes/pies in the Forest Hills area?

Another thumbs down for Martha's. I was extremely excited when it first opened; however, everything I've tried has been pretty gross. I think anyone (even a 10 year old) can make better cupcakes at home - and I'm really not exaggerating. I'd rather eat a Hostess cupcake than their overpriced $3 cupcakes.

Asian Birthday Cake

I am Korean and I despise Korean bakeries. Their cakes and pastries look pretty but they are extremely overpriced ($30-$50 range) and are usually dry and overly sweet. Trust me, you WILL be disappointed. On the other hand, Chinese bakeries make much yummier cakes that are far more reasonable in price ($13 - $25). I'm not sure where you are, but being that you go to 69th and Roosevelt, Fay Da Bakery in Elmhurst right off Broadway on Justice Ave is closer to you than Flushing. I haven't yet seen a full-fledged Japanese bakery in Queens, but I'd love to try one.

Best Sandwiches (Any Type) in Queens

Little Saigon on Grand Ave (Broadway becomes Grand Ave after QB) sells several varieties of Vietnamese sandwiches. They are delicious and the restaurant is very clean for regular Vietnamese restaurant standards.

Best Wine Shop in nyc?

For PJ Wine online purchases over $100, shipping is free to NYC EXCEPT Staten Island. Staten Island still is part of NYC ;)
