Good places to live in Brooklyn based on food/bevs?

As a non-native who is now living in Bay Ridge I have to say that this is absolutely not the best place for an NYC newbie to first live. Most of the people in the neighborhood are native Brooklynites and the area is very family-friendly. You'll be doing most of your partying/carousing in other neighborhoods and will very likely be far from the friends you make upon moving here. That being said, I totally love BR. But, I'm dating a native and have lived in NYC for the past 4 years now.

That being said, I'd look into Carrol Gardens/Boerum Hill/Cobble Hill as a first spot. Tons of great restaurants and bars, not too tough of a commute to where you're working, plenty of singles, and an all-around good vibe. Your rent $$ isn't going to go too far but if you're spending most of your time at home during your first year in NYC, you're doing it wrong. The South Slope/Gowanus area is also an option as it's very close to CG and Park Slope plus it's cheaper to rent.

Anniversary dinner in Brooklyn

My girlfriend and I are going to be celebrating our one year anniversary in a couple of weeks. I'd like to find a spot with good options for both the gluten-intolerant (me) and people who avoid red meat (my g/f) anywhere from Bay Ridge (where we live) up to Ft. Greene. Price isn't an issue although I do have a preference for somewhere that doesn't require formal attire as I'm planning a night out afterward which would necessitate a costume change if we were to dress up.

We dig places like Cebu, The Pearl Room, and Fushimi in Bay Ridge and have enjoyed Bogota a few times up in the Slope.

Rotisserie or Grilled Chicken in midtown

Aside from the Chirping Chicken in GCT, what else is around? I'm on 6th ave in the 40s and am having a big craving for good rotisserie chicken a la Pio Pio or Chicken Festival. Any ideas?

worthy take out in Sunnyside or LIC ? After 9:30pm or weekends?

I second the taco truck on Roosevelt and 52nd. I actually look forward to coming home late from work as it gives me a solid excuse to hit this truck on the way home.

Also, El Rey del Tacos on 49St and 43Ave is pretty good. I think they're open til at least midnight.

cocktails in Sunnyside?

We wound up hitting Sidetracks and it was fun. I definitely see the flat-screen brain meltdown thing but it really wasn't that bad. The drinks were well-mixed (granted they were very simple), good-sized, and reasonably priced. I'll definitely be back although it's more of a bar than a lounge. Either way, it was a nice place for the neighborhood.

cocktails in Sunnyside?

I've been there a few times and it's not really a loungey type place. Definitely a great spot to catch a football game, though!

Oh, cool! Yeah this was for Saturday night but I'll keep an eye on that space since I live right up the street.

cocktails in Sunnyside?

Thanks for the info everyone. I know of places in LIC and Astoria but I'm trying to see what's what in my new nabe. Sidetracks looks like it might be a little much but is definitely worth a shot. Quaint looks much better but it is a restaurant. I'll be sure to hit them both.

cocktails in Sunnyside?

Can anyone recommend me a nice low-key, perhaps even loungy, spot in Sunnyside for cocktails? It doesn't have to be Little Branch but aside from the sports bars and Irish pubs, it doesn't seem like there's a lot out here.

Freshest/best quality kosher sushi in NY?

Do you have an address or a website for this? I have a friend coming up this weekend who keeps Kosher and Sushi is on the agenda.

Sunnyside Taco Truck

El Rey del Oro under the 52St station is also pretty good. I can only compare it to the taco truck in Astoria (it's not as good as the truck in Astoria) but it's definitely a great option to have when coming home late.

kosher butcher near sunnyside?

Can anyone point me in the direction of a Kosher butcher in the Sunnyside/Woodside area? I have a car and can get to out of the way parts of Queens if necessary but would prefer something within walking distance!

Pineapples

Hi all-

I was recently in Hawaii and am missing the Maui Gold pineapples out there. Does anyone know of a place that sells good, very sweet, pineapples. Perhaps even the MGs? They're something like $10 a pineapple to mail order from the company and I'd like to keep it under that.

There are plenty of little bodegas in my area (Wash Hts) but the pineapples have always been very tart.

best PR style mofongo in NYC?

You're probably best checking out a few places in Inwood and Wash Hts. There's Albert's Mofongo House on Dyckman & Broadway right on top of the subway station.

You can also check out the menu guide put out by the Manhattan Times. A few of the places serve Mofongo in there. http://manhattantimesnews.com/covers/...

Trendy-ish 29th birthday spot

Hi all-

I'm looking for a good spot for a birthday dinner with a party of 10-12 on a Sunday below 14th St. My g/f's favorite neighborhood is the Village so anywhere around there would be great. Tastes-wise, she likes sushi and steaks. We were both big fans of Florent and also enjoy Landmarc and Quality Meats. I'd like to take her somewhere new for this one, however.

What say you?

Miami-an coming to NY!

If you're g-f, you NEED to go to Risotteria on Bleecker & Morgan. Full GF Italian menu featuring pizza, beer, pasta, panini, risotto, and a full range of really tasty desserts. It's usually packed but worth the wait. My mother and I are both celiac and she nearly started crying the first time I took her there.

Another excellent g-f option is Peter's Gourmet Diner on 84th and 1st on the UES. They serve a full diner menu with most of the items having a GF option. I'm talking pancakes, melts, beer, you name it. There's also a GF chinese place in the same area called Gourmet Land. None of these places are really trendy, however.

For chic/upscale Thai, try Kittichai. If you let them know ahead of time they will notify your server who will be able to let you know exactly what you can and cannot have (most of the menu is fine). Most of the nicer places take food allergies very seriously and will do their best to accommodate you. Any of the Batali restaurants will serve GF pasta at your request and will also be able to tell you what you can and cannot have on the menu. Quality Meats and Craftsteak are both very accommodating to food allergies and have an upscale vibe.

Let me know if you want more info on GF dining up here (or just search the board).

Moving to 43rd and 9th--suggestions?

Wondee Siam II on 54/9 is decent takeout/delivery Thai. El Centro, which is catty-cornered to WSII, is haute-ish Mexican. I'm a fan of Pluck U, which is around 50th and 9th for wings as well.

Red Mango - what do you think?

I haven't been to any of the other yogurt places aside from RM but I do like it a lot. Just the right combo of sweet and sour. I'd stay away from the shakes because the flavor seemed a little muted for some reason when I got one. Otherwise, it's great!

Awesome :). I hope you like it!

There's no menu on the CH page for the restaurant but http://www.tulcingorestaurant.com/ has the full menu available.

You should also check out Tulcingo for Mexican. It's across the street from Tehuitzingo, has a larger menu, and also real seating. Tehuitzingo is more of a little taqueria in the back of a quickie mart whereas TdV is more of a traditional restaurant. Both are excellent but TdV has many more vegetarian options. TdV also has daily specials which can be hit-or-miss but are worth a try if you're feeling adventurous.

Rhong-Tiam (formerly Penang)

They had a spicy tasting challenge going on a couple of months ago, I believe. Anyone know if that's been extended beyond the April 15 end-date? My g/f and I wanted to do it but couldn't get our act together in time.

Authentic Cuban Restaurant in NYC ?

'Cuba' at 224 Thompson St. is pretty good. I also like Guantanamera at 939 8th Ave. I don't know about authentic since I've never been to Cuba but both places' food reminds me of the Cuban we used to get growing up in S. Florida (though to be fair I'm many years removed from that now).

Interesting Street Tamales in Upper Manhattan

Thanks for the info - I'll be sure to check out the stands on 137/bway this weekend if they're around.

As an aside, La CabaƱa SalvadoreƱa on 187 & Broadway sells some amazing tamales etole that are worth the trip up. Actually, everything I've tried there has been excellent but that's a whole other thread.

Hill Country - what's best?

I'm a big fan of the brisket and the ribs there. The sausages are hit-or-miss but the jalapeno-cheese sausages are excellent when they hit.

For sides I like the bbq baked beans and the whipped sweet potatoes.

As far as drinks, there's a mixed drink made with vodka and tang that is out of this world. The red soda is also nice.

NYC good steak casual place?

My g/f and I are big fans of Landmarc in the Time Warner Center for a casual steak. I've shown up in t-shirts and sneakers before without any overt fuss from the staff.

The steak frites at Florent is also very good and totally casual. They're closing on June 29, though, so get a move on if you're going to check them out.
