Tex-Mex in Lewisville/Coppel/Carrollton area

we ate at Mi Dia from Scratch last night. i am still floating from the meal. the huitlacoche quesadillas were superb; and the skirt steak/relleno combination was .... heaven. hands down my new favorite restaurant in the coppell/grapevine burbs. not sure why it took us so long to get there (ok, i know why...the 8 year old is at summer camp and we are finally able to eat out late without bedtime interfering!)

tainan, taiwan- one dinner, 2 lunches--recommendations, please.

thanks, guys.

the shrimp thing is huge. i don't want to end up in the hospital, so will unfortunately steer clear of the slack season noodles.

a family friend is now taking us for milkfish lunch, and we plan to do the da dong market for dinner that night, so hopefully will find a number of good snacks to feast on. I will try to report so that some other poor soul with no recommendations can at least see this thread. :))

would welcome suggestions for 2 lunches and 1 dinner of "must eat" local Tainan cuisine...we're taking my son back in 3 weeks to refresh his memories, and i know he loves the minced pork over rice and noodles galore...the complication is that i'm allergic to shellfish, so would appreciate some "go to" dishes and places just in case.

up for adventure, just not hidden shellfish.

thanks!

Buying a New Range - Bosch or Jenn-Air

Buying a New Range - Bosch or Jenn-Air

awesome thread as i am currently debating what dual-fuel range we should go with in our remodel. i love my bosch dishwasher--in fact it is the second one i've purchased because i loved the first one (in a different house!) so much--and was hoping to see some good info on the bosch ranges. we're leaning toward a 30" dual-fuel range and a second wall oven. it will fit into our kitchen better than a pro-style and hopefully cost less. i hope.

Aldi

hey, anyone who has ever lived in an area where Aldi existed knows that
Aldi is not a "foodie" place. It is a basics place. I shopped there to economize when i was in law school, and thank goodness for it. it saved me a lot of money back then.

their TX locations are much nicer than the ones i shopped in IL, btw.

there's not alot i would buy there now. most of it is overly processed for our family's taste. but if i was on food stamps, i would definitely shop there. and that is more their target market (along with institutional purchases, very large families, others that live on very, very tight budgets.)

they also have specials every once in awhile that are truly .... special. you just have to watch.

p.s. i use plastic bags from the grocery store for my garbage bags. it avoids buying super-strength triple-ply non-puncturable-non-degradable bags, which i think is actually a beneficial use of grocery bags. i also own a number of reusable bags...but can't use them for garbage.

Which H-Mart Plaza restaurant is easiest for non-Koreans?

thanks, lh, i'm not completely new to korean cuisine, and love bibimbop, but i'm not sure how english-friendly these restaurants are. i ate at the food court at h-mart, and i'm sure there is better...does the tofu restaurant have a distinctive sign? and english name? (just to make sure i get the right spot) i do want to try kimchi pancakes...

btw, there is little i do not like to eat...

Which H-Mart Plaza restaurant is easiest for non-Koreans?

I want to try one of the new spots in the H-Mart Plaza, but am a little intimidated. Donna? Anyone? good suggestions for which spot to try first for dinner that will not be overwhelming and we will be able to decipher the menu? (I'm much less intimidated about Chinese, even with my rudimentary mandarin skills!)

Ningbo

is the Shipu the restaurant with the giant carp with collagen injected lip logo? i recall it was a multi-story restaurant with a whole room of plates showing ingredients in the dishes? an interesting spot to say the least.

b.b.bop rice bowls

okay, i know there was a thread on here that mentioned this spot (at the intersection of Luna and Valley View in Farmers Branch) but i searched for 5 minutes and couldn't find it...

after driving by the spot and curiously checking out what it looked like, then reading donna's review (thanks donna!) i dragged 2 coworkers with me to check it out for lunch yesterday...and bingo! no macarthur traffic. (first plus). no trouble finding a place to park. (second plus). no long line of people waiting to order/be seated. (third plus). i ordered a banh mi with beef, and my coworkers had variations on the rice bowls. i was disappointed that there is no crusty rice (the technical term for the sizzling oil/stone bowl bi bim bop escapes me at the current *senior* moment, but if you like the genre, you know what i'm referring to), and all rice bowls are "shaken, not stirred" in a large plastic bucket--the aesthetics aside, the veggies looked very fresh and good, and everyone was happy with their lunch. why no pork banh mi? can't figure that out. but the beef was good. i had the other half of the sandwich for lunch today and ended with a tingling mouth from the ingredient heat. yum.

check it out. warning though--hours are funky--closed on weekends, but open till 7 on week nights. also, wednesdays appear to be free drink with meal special or something similar.

Camden/Rockland (ME) August 2008

okay. here's what we did.

drive up--ate at the Sea Basket near Wiscasset. really not bad for a spur of the moment decision.
next day, had breakfast at Thomaston Cafe--my friend in Waldoboro recommended it. Busy spot, friendly. (had lunch at lobsta-fest, nothing to write home about there. dinner was at friend's house)
next day, had blueberry pie for lunch. at moody's diner. okay, not fabulous, but love, love, love blueberries. dinner at primo, which as i said, i've been to before, and it was good, and our friends enjoyed it. sorry, there it is.
next day, had dinner at cappy's chowda house--we wanted inexpensive, and this wasn't bad considering.
then we drove back to bos to fly home and stopped at the todd english restaurant at the airport before our flight.

thanks for the rec's for cheap eats. we were trying to "unsnobbify" our palates this trip.

Primo's not negotiable.

Francine's looks good, but too pricey. We're having 1 "expensive" meal and it is booked.

Anyone have more local "dive" type places that they really enjoy? Fried clams?

what's open/good summer 2008? also looking for roadfood recommendations for the drive from camden to boston for casual dining along the highway.

we're booked at Primo one night, but have at least 2 nights to experiment with hopefully local, slightly less expensive fare. (and yes, i have been to the orlando location of primo and want to go back!..i don't need reviews of that restaurant!)

please do tell. we're leaving in 5 days...

p.s. i'm allergic to shellfish...yes, i know, it is a travesty...dh is not allergic, so as long as there are options, i'll be fine...

New Catfish House in Carrollton

A successful visit to The Catfish House this evening...excellent crisp, extremely hot, non-greasy fried catfish, oysters (plump and bursting), and really interesting extruded-looking hushpuppies. The only disappointment (perhaps too strong a word) was the beans & rice--it looked like soup. I asked "where's the rice"? expecting a scoop of rice in the middle, and they took it back to insert more rice. When it came back it still looked like soup, but I gave up and tried it--the taste was excellent, very nice, but it just wasn't what I expected.

Overall, this is a fantastic local find.

Driving from Boston to Camden, ME...

any good dinner spots (going up) and lunch (coming back)?

is Hilltop Steakhouse any good? when i used to live in Boston it was always discussed so seriously as THE place to stop...

tia, and if any of you New Englanders decide to visit Dallas, let me know and i'll swap advice.

modified to add (10 minutes later)...

well, i looked at the Boston "proper" board, and see that Hilltop may have changed (or not, depending on the viewpoint) from 20 years ago, when i actually lived in Boston (but never had the chance to visit the spot)...is kitsch factor for a road trip alone enough of a redeeming value for a spouse that has never been to New England?? (grin) Or are there other interesting spots that would be more worthy??

Red Chili Pepper Flakes Without Seeds

is this due to diverticulitis/osis (can't ever remember which ending)? if you are successful in finding, please let me know as my father suffers from it also.

nb, this is not the same thing as chili powder--unless i'm wrong, the op is referring to the "italian restaurant style" red pepper flakes. i agree that it is easy to make powders from fresh chilis as well.
