Did Metro stop carrying Claussen pickles?

I've been buying them at the Avenue Rd. Pusateris. It's the only reason I have for going there, in fact! As of a month ago, they had lots.

Sika Deer in Scarborough - my new Shanghainese fav in GTA

Thanks for the reviews, this is really helpful. I frequently work nearby, but hadn't tried this place yet due to dodgy yelp reviews.

One thing to note, the parking lot is a nightmare at the best of times (particularly lunching hours), and for the next few weeks the lot will be under construction, making it much much worse - strongly suggest parking at the Skycity mall one block north on Midland instead, for now.

Indian Mango?

I bought a case of 12 alphonsos for $18 today at Om (dufferin/centre st) - they also had kesar and totapuri. the alphonsos are much higher quality than the case I bought for $24 last week at the peanut plaza.

Thai Basils - where to find all three?

Richters sells tulsi seed, it's pretty trivial to grow in the kitchen or garden.

Unique Indian Dishes (Vegetarian)

I don't do buffet if I can help it, but I've quite enjoyed Anjappar Chettinad for South Indian food. Lots of vegetarian, but they have some meat and fish options as well. Price is right and there are several locations. Check the website, often there is a promotion.

Best Caribbean food?

Just south of the Tonka gas station (always cheap!) at Fulton & Pape, tucked in behind a barber shop so not visible from Pape proper.

Best Caribbean food?

I would call ahead to the place on Pape - I've tried to grab lunch there a few times around 12:30-1PM after seeing the dentist next door, only to find the chicken wasn't even ready yet! Sometimes they are set up outside with a grilling drum.

New ' Food' Plaza on westside of Midland just north of Finch - Any eateries in there worth trying??!!

Luckily, I like spicy fare a lot, so I'm looking forward to exploring here.

First report: Yang's BBQ. It was the busiest place in the late afternoon, around 4PM. Zero atmosphere or decor. Ordered just two dishes, a Xinjiang lamb stir fry out of curiosity, and ma po tofu for comfort. The latter was unremarkable, but the former was quite hot (about 20 dried red chiles) and jam-packed with cumin. The quality of the meat was nothing to write home about, with more gristly bits than I would have liked, but overall this unsubtle flavour bomb was quite satisfying. I could see through time. I'd like to go back and try a sampler of their bbq skewer items over a pitcher of beer.

New ' Food' Plaza on westside of Midland just north of Finch - Any eateries in there worth trying??!!

Are there any updated reviews for restaurants in the Finch/Midland plaza? I'll be working there a lot in the coming weeks, and I'm not sure where to start. I'm familiar with the Owl of Minerva chain, Korean Grill House holds zero appeal, and other reviews of Sika Deer suggest it's not worth it.

Charles, did you do any further exploring in this mall?

What would you LOVE as a midnight snack @ a wedding? [Do you even want one?]

Oh man does that take me back to younger (and drunker) days in Winnipeg - I had totally forgot about the Prairie cold cut platters!

Nowadays, however, I usually feel the midnight snack is a bit over the top if the meal was decent to start with.

Viet House (Dufferin/Orfus) - a good lunch

Sorry, should have mentioned - before tax, $30 for the beef 7 ways for two, and shakes came in at about $4 each. Pho ran $6/7/8 small to large, and perhaps we'll order that next time to better gauge the basics.

Viet House (Dufferin/Orfus) - a good lunch

We were doing the Lady York/Grande Cheese run today, and instead of stopping into Seoul House on Orfus, we tried out Viet House in the same mall, further South towards Samor Rd off Dufferin. We were the first customers of the day, and the place was large, well lit, and clean. There's a small stage, perhaps there's karaoke at night? Anyway, soursop shakes were quick in coming, and we ordered the chef's special "beef 7 courses" for 2. For an appetizer, there was a small beef hotpot "fondue" to cook to your preferred doneness, with the usual rice paper wrappers/mint/veg/vermicelli. The beef salad was delicate with a pleasing trace of heat, the beef satay was what you would expect, the beef wrapped in betel leaf was nicely seasoned, the steamed beef pate shot through with structural noodles was absolutely delightful, and the beef congee to finish off was just the right consistency and brimming with aromatics. Very happy with the meal and we will definitely go back.

Anyone familiar with this place have specific menu recommendations for a return visit?

Why I won't go to What-A -Bagel, 3515 Bathurst St.

Living pretty close by, I end up going to this Whata frequently, usually with a kid or two in tow. It's 50-50 whether they get a free cookie or something, unlike Isaac's which is always friendlier that way. I have never noticed a short changing problem, but I'll pay more attention now! I must say, however, that there's an almost comically cranky woman in charge of the falafel/schwarma zone many days - don't you dare try asking for the "wrong" toppings! Nonetheless, I'd rather deal with her than deal with the lineup at Tov Li across the road for a falafel...

Best Indian Curry in Brampton?

After all the seriously excellent tips I've picked up from your posts, I'd be downright scared to send you anywhere! My few experiences in Brampton, even with the Indian side of the family, have tended to feature, uhm, quantity over quality (see: Tandoori Flame). That said, Anjappar Chettinad was definitely better than the same old same old, as others have noted.

Ha Long Bay closing July 30

Had lunch at Ha Long Bay today, and I'm sad to report a notice was up that they are shutting down for good on July 30th - sounds like rent's too high. Plans to reopen elsewhere seemed up in the air.

Ben & Izzy's

I got some corned beef and pastrami sandwiches from "Big Al's Delish" (Bathurst/Fairlawn) the other day. About twice the meat for about half the price of B&I's - not Kosher. $5.95 with a pickle. Al said he's been preparing his own meat for years in the catering business, and the storefront sandwich operation is more of a fun sideline to the main catering action. Little room to sit down (two chairs I think), so it's not really a restaurant in direct competition with B&I/Pancers etc. Flavours were not so pronounced as the B&I product, but I'm not complaining. Everything was tender.

Wilson and Keele - HELP!!

There's actually an interesting/scary history of mob-related nonsense at Commisso Bros, including murder and bombings... all googlable for the curious. I never went back after one super-unfriendly sandwich transaction.

Wilson and Keele - HELP!!

A little further west, but for banh mi, I like the Nguyen Huong store just past Jane on the south side of Wilson.

Ben & Izzy's

We got pastrami and smoked meat sandwiches yesterday, and found the smoked meat quite good but a bit different as you mentioned. We had slightly worse luck with the pastrami, which seemed more gristly than it ought to be.

For the quantity of meat provided at this price point (about $10/sandwich), it's not exactly Schwartz's-level of value. I guess the Kosher tax/premium takes its toll. On the other hand, it's a short walk away instead of a train ride; I'm certain we'll be back frequently as the place matures. The space is certainly a lot more inviting than Pancer's!

2013 Alphonso Mangos

Whenever I've bought them at an Indian-owned store, I've been given the opportunity to swap out the fruit I don't care for. If that doesn't seem to be in the offing, just ask - it seems to be normal protocol. I aim to get 1/3 in the box that are ready to eat now, 1/3 that aren't terribly ripe at all, and 1/3 of intermediate status, avoiding obvious bruising and black spots if possible. Ripeness seems to correlate best with how much squish or give there is in the fruit, I'm not sure if the black spots are relevant or not.

2013 Alphonso Mangos

They have been for sale for the last week or two at Om India Food Center (Dufferin/Center). They weren't looking good two weeks ago, but the case I bought today is totally up to snuff. Still $25 per case.

Take out/Delivery @ Avenue and Lawrence?

For delivery sushi, we've found Sushi One (4924 Yonge St) to be much higher quality than anything closer by in the neighbourhood (although I can't speak for the kosher sushi options on Bathurst). Sushi One's delivery zone only covers Avenue/Lawrence for dinner time.

To satisfy non-fancy Chinese delivery cravings, we've found Blossom (Wilson/Dufferin) to be a better option than anything on Avenue or C'est Bon, for the dishes we like at least.

Yakamoz (Wilson West of Bathurst) for takeout shwarma is the business, but probably best not to go too late in the day as the chicken on the spit sometimes gets a bit too crusty by dinner time.

Karbouzi (Avenue/Dunblaine) for take-out Greek has served us well, more so than Greek Gourmet.

Take out falafel from Tov-li (or even What A Bagel if the Tov-li lineup is too psychicly damaging) (Bathurst/Old Orchard) is quite credible.

ISO: Smoked Sturgeon

I've purchased smoked sturgeon at Yummy Market, a great Russian/Eastern European grocery on Dufferin just south of Finch (same plaza as Canadian Tire). Lots of fish options there, but I can't get out of the place without a load of sausage and some pickled items too. There baked goods are also worth checking out.

A small cautionary note, however - you might consider asking for a sample first, as one time when I bought sturgeon there it tasted a little more bottom-feedery than good product should. Not rotten or off, just not prime stuff. Always had good luck with the other smoked fish items there though.

Haymishe Bagel Shop - Fire

I was down there with my 3yr old this morning - those photos don't really do justice to the epic scale of the conflagration. Sad day in the bagel district, but a great day for local juvenile "rescue action" enthusiasts, alas.
