Chadd's Bistro - Rochester

Been seeing some local ads for the place so finally tried it last night. My only regret - why did I wait so long? Easily the best sandwich type joint in the area. Small place, limited seating, and so worth any effort necessary. I had the Highlander and it was wonderful. Really liked the fries. Some Yelp reviews have compared it to Zingermans and I can see why.

Daytona area - looking for curing salt (sel rose)

I've got a recipe for curing pork tenderloin as if it were ham and it specifically calls for sel rose. Since posting my request for a local source, I've ordered some online thru Amazon.

What's your favorite recent meal you've ate in Florida not in a home?

St. Augustine's The Floridian's take on shrimp and grits. Was there just before Christmas. I was ready to go back the next night for the exact same meal.

Cork and Bottle - New Smyrna Beach

Been wintering in NSB for past 15 years and have enjoyed many of the local eateries. Last Wednesday night I tried the Cork and Bottle on Canal Street and had what was by far the best meal I've ever had in NSB. I'm a big fan of braised dishes and their short ribs were among the best I've ever eaten. My wife had a stuffed flounder special that was also impressive. Wine list is a pleasant surprise (although I would like to see a sparkling wine on the by the glass listings). Prices were very reasonable. The Cork and Bottle has been firmly placed on our regular dining list.

skyline style diner in Detroit area

I personally don't get the infatuation with Skyline Chili, but, I have Ohioan friends that swear by it. I have found cans of Skyline brand chili in Meijers stores and in the Glens (now Family Fare) chain. My Ohio friends now living in Grayling were ecstatic when I bought some for them and they claim the canned product is nearly as good as found in the restaurants.

Bit of a drive but if you're ever in St. Augustine the Floridian has a unique take on shrimp and grits that is very good.

Do hidden gems exist in Mid-Michigan? (No worthy stops en route up north.)

Might want to try Wheelers in Standish. Old timey place that we like to hit on the way from Rochester to the Au Sable River. Open face roast beef sandwich will fill you up for hours.

Silver Spoon (Italian) in Rochester Hills, MI [DTW]

I'm not VTB or Boagman but I have eaten at the Meeting House several times and as recently as last week. It continues to be one of my favorites in the entire area. Living in Rochester Hills makes it even more attractive to me as it's only 10 minutes away. My wife, son and I have tried many of the menu listings and the braised short rib continues to be the best braised dish I've ever had in a restaurant.

Found 'em!! Busch's at Adams and University is now carrying them. They didn't have them on the shelf when I first checked about 2 weeks ago. On sale 2 bags for $5.

Got addicted to these in Florida this winter. Can't find them in the metro Detroit area despite their web site listing a whole bunch of local stores as carrying them. Anybody seen them?

The Meeting House Rochester, MI

Have had the pleasure of dining at the Meeting House twice. First time we actually weren't all that hungry and just sampled small plates and salads. Second time I had braised short ribs and I can honestly say it was the very best braised meat dish I've ever eaten. I'm a big fan of pot roasts and short ribs and am extremely pleased to have found this on their menu.

Bearded Dogg - Gaylord

On the strength of a recent recommendation on this board, my wife and I tried the Bearded Dogg in Gaylord last night. This place rocks! Easily the best meal I've ever had in Gaylord and up there with the whole of Northern Michigan. Neat interior, interesting menu, good service. We will be adding this to our list of "up north" favorites along with Cafe Sante, Pearls, Phil's on Front, Lulu's, Siren Hall, Esperance, and the dining room at Gates Au Sable Lodge.

Bagels in N. Michigan

Any recommendations for bagels in the Gaylord, Grayling area for bagels? I'll even try grocery store brands if you have a good source. I'm looking for something along the lines of Brueggers.

Gates Au Sable Lodge - Grayling

You are right - reservations for dinner are a must - especially for non-guests. They can usually accomidate drop ins for breakfast and dinner with little problem. The dining room is small - probably only seats about 30. Also, it's Greenberg not Greenbberg. Typings not my best skill.

Gates Au Sable Lodge - Grayling

New owners Josh and Katy Greenbberg have really put their own mark on this legendary flyfishing lodge located on the banks of the Au Sable River at Stephan Bridge east of Grayling. This year the dining room features the addition of an accomplished chef fresh from the Ritz Carlton in Naples. The chef's wife also specializes in baked goods and pastries. The menu has been updated while retaining some of the items that are well known and dear to the lodge guests, some of whom have been staying their for many years during the fishing season. I've had breakfast, lunch, and dinner there so far this spring and have yet to hit a sour note. The daily specials have all been well worth trying. Grayling now may well become another destination just for the food at Gates along with the wonderful fly fishing.

Clancy's Mid Town Dogs - New Smyrna Beach

The hot dog place is on the mainland on US1 on west side just north of Washington. Don't confuse it with the Clancy's Cantina on Flagler on the beachside.

Clancy's Mid Town Dogs - New Smyrna Beach

Being from suburban Detroit and a real coney dog fan for years, I've been looking forward to Steve Clancy's Mid Town Dogs opening in New Smyrna Beach. A friend whose opinion I trust reported that the Chicago Dog was true to the original so I was anticipating the coney (chili) dog offerings. Here's what I found - the dog was good, larger than the traditional Detroit size or type but very acceptable, the chili was spicier that most found at my "home" coney islands but actually quite good. Now for the bad part - the dog is bigger than usual, and with a load of chili on it, the bun used isn't up to the task. My dog bun split even before I could pick it up and it ended up being the single messiest food offering I've ever tried to eat. I needed a knife and fork to eat it and unfortunately, none were to be seen.

Maybe I was hoping for too much but I don't think I should be expected to need a hosing down after trying to eat a hot dog.

DTW - Where to get shad roe

Not to hijack this thread but, a waiter at the old Joe Muers once described shad roe to me as -
take a banana to the beach, drop it in the sand, and then try to eat it.
