Santa Cruz/101 South Farmer's Markets

Hi Hounds; family and I are taking a kid's karate tournament/gymnastics meet road trip to Santa Cruz, then down the coast to San Luis Obispo. Anyone know of any farmer's/grower's markets this time of year? Interesting markets or holes in the wall? Thanks

Chinatown Walkaway Food/Noodle Shops

My wife and i are taking our two adopted (from China!) 6 year olds through Chinatown this Saturday morning. Not really looking for formal restaurant recs; more like Chinese walk out food places, XLB, noodle shops, stuff we can take home that afternoon. I was in Chinatown some years ago and stumbled on a place that made traditional hand thrown noodles. Any places like that still exist? Thanks for any help you can provide.

Feedback on Monterey/PG restaurants

Three girlfriends heading over to watch some golf next week. We tentatively have reservations at Peppers on Thursday and Fandango's on Friday. Any recent experiences you can share? I've been reading here that we should try Passionfish or Sardine Factory. Should we switch?

Breakfast Off The Strip

Two of us here for the NFR, looking for a good breakfast place, preferably off strip. Heard of the Cracked Egg, but any other recs would be nice. Thanks.

Need Fresno (or close) Recs For A Gift

Hey 'hounds. We're looking for places we could get gift certificates for Fresno area relatives. They're adventurous, so most anything goes. High end, ethnic, markets, the works. Any help would be appreciated. Happy Holidays.

Le Cirque Closed; Another Choice?

Four of us will be in Vegas 12/2-4, and were looking forward to a tasting menu at Le Cirque. It's closed during our visit. Any recs for a similar experience? We're all pretty adventurous and this is an annual experience for us at a food destination. Thanks.

Brief Review Of Carnevino; Not Too Happy

Took my daughter to Carnevino for a nice experience last week. She's a UNLV student, heard good things and I'm a Babbo/Esca NY fan. Started of well with bread and a creamy pork belly spread, along with butter. Ordered a glass of Barolo and was talking to daughter when the waitress poured. As she walked away, I noticed it was a Nebbiolo. I tasted the wine and, when she returned, brought it to her attention. She told me Nebbiolo WAS Barolo. I walked over to the table where the wines sat and she had brought the wrong wine. Again, I mentioned it and she asked me whether I liked the wine or not! Not the point, I replied. She actually argued with me. So. Daughter had clams al forno. When they arrived, there were no clams in three of them. Filled with an extremely salty amalgam of bread crumbs and more. Informed the waitress and was told the clams were in there, they were just tiny. Holy cow. Still we persevered. I ordered the sweetbreads. Doesn't get any better, right? OK, I give up. Not to sound nasty, but they were McNuggets. Cold, very overcooked, hard as rocks. Even our waitress acknowledged they were bad. We were done. Should I try again, or is this the norm?

Driving From Sac Thru Barstow

Looking for recs along the way. Funky, eclectic, ethnic, markets.

Sacramento To Las Vegas

Hey 'hounds,

I'm driving down Hwy 99 south to Hwy 58 east to Vegas in mid August. About a four day trip, so no hurry. Any gems out there? Ethnic, markets, food carts, eclectic? We only pass this way once, and all that. Thanks.

San Jose Sushi?

Any good recs on sushi/sahimi in San Jose? Pacific Northwest hounds staying downtown next weekend; looking for traditional as opposed to rolls, but we enjoy all. Will have a car. Thanks all.

San Jose Dim Sum

Hound and daughter will be in San Jose 2/20-22. She's been to China several times and speaks Mandarin fairly well. We're looking for authentic dim sum for a Saturday outing. Any thoughts? We'll be mobile, staying near the HP Pavilion. Thanks a lot.

Three Days In Spokane

Wife and I, along with two little kids, will be in town this Sunday through Tuesday. Any interesting recs to pass along? Growers markets? Thanks 'hounds.

A week in Spokane

Gordy's Sichuan is a great local place with wonderful fresh food. Try the long beans with spicy sausage. Not sure if they take reservations, so be pe prepared to wait.

Gourmet/Eclectic Food To Bring Home

Longtime 'hound's wife & daughter are taking a school trip with a group 3/18-4/3. They'll hit Venice, Padua, Ravenna, Rimini, Bologna, San Marino, Assisi, Perugia and Rome. Any thoughts on cool stuff they can come home with for me? I'm dying that I won't be there. Salumeria's probably a stretch. Truffles, oils, pasta, gadgets. ANYTHING? Also, any food/market recs in any of the towns are welcome. Thanks. Ciao.

Alone in West Hollywood

Near La Cienega and Melrose is Le Petit Bistro. Small French place, lots of local regulars, some faded beauties. Good food, friendly staff. Good Merguez sausages, mussels and more.

Ethnic, Eclectic Recs Near The Financial District

Thanks for the recs. I'll try to stay out of the lake!

Best Italian Canned Tomatoes?

I know the question was about canned tomatoes, but there's a variety of plum tomato by the same name. If you can get some at a nursery or grower's market and tend your own, they're great. Stew and use or freeze.

Ethnic, Eclectic Recs Near The Financial District

I'll be staying in the financial district 2/4-8. Looking for markets, deli's, cool and eclectic ethnic food. Little Tokyo is fairly close; any recs there? Adventurous and I'll have a refrigerator in the room. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks hounds.

In SD For A Week, Looking For Great Deli's, Ethnic/Gourmet Markets

No, but the trolley is handy.

Hounds In Palm Springs 12/14-19, Looking For Recs, Upscale Market

Two foodie couples will be in PS for about a week, staying in a condo. We're looking for local eats and a good food/meat/seafood/grower's market, as three of us cook. Adventurous, looking for high and low end. Any help is appreciated.

Pac NW Hound In SD 1/5-9, Looking For Local/Eccentric

For good food, I'll make myself mobile, either via rental car or taxi!

Pac NW Hound In SD 1/5-9, Looking For Local/Eccentric

I'll be in San Diego Sunday through Thursday first week In January. Staying at Hotel Circle, but not afraid of the Trolley. I've been to most of the really good restaurants in the area and elsewhere, and am looking for local recs, out of the way joints, ethnic markets, scary places and more. OK, hold the REALLY scary places. Could be dine in, takeout, whatever. Always up for Latin/Mexican, Japanese, not afraid of spice. As always, thanks 'hounds.

New Zealand Green Mussels at Ranch 99 in SD

Maybe I'm being a food elitist, but putting marinara sauce on mussels is like putting ketchup on a ribeye. I think the term you're looking for is meuniere. It's simply steaming them, covered, with salt, pepper, garlic and good white wine, maybe a fresh herb or two. Nothing too strong. A little good bread, more of that good white wine and you're there. Mind not to overcook the mussels. Take them of the heat as soon as they open.

Oregon 'Hound/Daughter Loking For Ethnic In Miami/Sunny Isles

My 16 year old and I will be staying in Sunny Isles and visiting Miami for four days, and are interested in local ethnic fare; things we wouldn't see in the Northwest. Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks.

"Grand Cafe" smoker Costco

I just put mine together. Well, my wife did; she's an engineer and I'm the cook! It looks pretty good, and I'm going to smoke a turkey and brisket this week. I'd be interested in any feedback on this smoker or your experiences, hints and tips. Thanks.

Bend/High Desert Recs

I'm at a business meeting the next three days in Bend. Any interesting 'hound recs? There'll be a group of us, and we're pretty open. Thanks.

Eating at the Ashland Festival?

I echo New Sammy's. Also, athough not in Ashland, try Gogi's in Jacksonville. I think it's the finest restaurant in Southern Oregon.

Oregon Hound In LA Next Week Looking For Local Recs

Thanks all. Are there any good taco trucks/stands/restaurants close by? Go Ducks.
