Baby Friendly in LA

You're right, Father's Office is definitely not baby friendly! At 34, I STILL get carded every time I go there.

Baby Friendly in LA

I had lunch at R+D Kitchen on Sunday and couldn't believe how many babies and small children were there - even at the bar, which I always thought was illegal!

Aloha Hawaii! Please Critique SF Chowhounds' Visit to Kauai and Maui for Next Week!

We were in Kauai in November and also loved our meal at Kaua'i Ono. The food was great and we really enjoyed the company at our table, as well as the casual yet festive vibe.

On the recommendation of one of our dining companions, we went the next day to the Kilauea Fish Market in Kapaa for seared ahi tuna wraps. They were completely delicious - if we had discovered them sooner, we probably would have had one every time we passed through Kapaa, which was often.

Baby Friendly in LA

I've been to Din Tai Fung with a baby, and it was very easy. The only thing is, you will want to time your visit for off-peak hours to avoid a long wait (which I always do anyway).

It's not a downer if you never look at the nutritional information, like me! =)

Maude in Beverly Hills. Any early reports?

FYI, if the March (artichoke) menu can be taken as typical, the featured ingredient is more of an inspiration than anything else. There were many dishes I wouldn't have even known contained artichoke if they hadn't told me - for instance, there was one that only had a tiny bit of artichoke foam, and another that had ice cream made from an artichoke liqueur. Even if someone wasn't a huge fan of the featured ingredient, I think it would be pretty safe to go anyway.

Maude in Beverly Hills. Any early reports?

Speaking of Nancy Silverton, both Mozzas had a similar phone-only, one-month-in-advance-only reservation system when they opened and it was a real pain in the a** to get a reservation, remember? The fact that they changed to OpenTable gives me hope that other holdouts will as well.

Trader Joe's YAY/NAY - April 2014

YAY for the Vegetable Biryani. I really like all of the frozen Indian entrees, but this was the first time I had tried this one (I think it's new-ish?). I had it with plain Greek yogurt on top. Really good!

And I've YAYed it before, but I'll say it again - I love the Soft & Juicy Mandarins. Better than any citrus candy I've had.

Shellfish -- L.A. Dish of the Month, April 2014

I don't normally eat shellfish, but I actually can make one contribution (albeit from late March) - a Rhode Island diver scallop crudo with caviar, fennel, and nasturtiums at Maude. Again, not normally my thing, but I loved this dish. The flavor of the scallops was extremely fresh and clean, and the whole dish was perfectly balanced.

Maude in Beverly Hills. Any early reports?

Having the four courses be small bites is the only way I can make it through a nine course course meal! Courses 5-8 were quite substantial in our meal (although obviously not entree sized) - in fact, I couldn't finish my cheese and gave it to my husband. I've had other tasting menus where I've only been able to eat one little bite of the later courses and even then still felt sick afterwards - so this meal was perfect for me. I could see how if you have a very large appetite though, it might not be enough.

Maude in Beverly Hills. Any early reports?

I'm really surprised there hasn't been more buzz about Maude here. We went last night and it was FABULOUS. Such delicious food and such a good deal at $75pp.Service was also excellent. I don't have time to do a full writeup now, but I've attached the menu below.

MEH on the Thai Lime & Chili Almonds. I love the flavors, but I need salt! I think the smoked almonds have the perfect amount of salt (but others here have found them too salty).

PLAN CHECK CHICKEN SANDWICH - The Best

I love Plan Check, but I prefer Honor Bar/R+D Kitchen's version - I think it's more well-balanced. Plus it sits a little more lightly on the stomach. =)

Where to have lunch with my four-month old on the Westside?

I love the Curious Palate in Mar Vista. It is baby-friendly in every way except that it would be too tight inside for the stroller - but I think it would work if you sat on the patio.

Where to get my knives sharpened??

I had Magnus do my knives and liked the result much more than when I took them to Ross's. Plus he picked them up and dropped them off at my house, and it only took an hour or two.

PIE - LA Dish of the Month (March 2014)

I'm eating leftover Morton's key lime pie - even several days later it's pretty damn good! It's not as tart as I would like, but that's just my personal taste. And the slice was huge!

PIE - LA Dish of the Month (March 2014)

Strawberry-rhubarb pie at Thyme Cafe in Santa Monica last night. I had the same reaction that I always have at Thyme, which is that I want to love it, but it just falls short for me. The rhubarb wasn't cooked quite enough, the crust was a bit tough, and there was a bitter aftertaste that I couldn't quite place. Oh, don't get me wrong, I ate the whole thing - but it didn't come close to my favorite fruit pies at Sweet Lady Jane.

NAY: Dark Chocolate Honey Mints. I love dark chocolate, but these unfortunately have an extremely bitter finish that just doesn't work for me. I really like the mint part, and of course I'm going to eat the whole bag, but I won't be buying again.
