No cod at Solley's!!
That is correct about Brent's making their own cod. I was not impressed after trying a piece of their cod, it had a funny smell and flavor not like the other product. Most of the other major delis in LA are getting their cod and other smoked fish as you point out from the East Coast. I called around and found out that most delis are carrying Smoked Cod, Lox and Whitefish from Acme Smoked Fish in Brooklyn. Check them out at www.acmesmokedfish.com. It appears that on the East Coast they supply places like Russ and Daughters, Zabars and Barney Greengrass. So the Delis out here seem to be buying their smoked fish from a great source.
Fab's in Van Nuys -- Finally Open!
They did close and they did remodel. The restaurant was run by Joe Fab, he sold it to his grandson and son who have kept the name but have changed around the menu. So technically they are New owners with a revamped concept.
Fab's in Sherman Oaks
From what I heard, the place was going to be opened by the original owner's grandson. As to why no more construction at the site, he had grand plans and ran out of money sometime in December 2007. So it sits. Anyone want to buy it and open "Chowhounder's Delight" ????
Moving to Studio City
Yes they are really big sandwiches. I asked about them one day. They told me that they put a full pound of meat on those triple decker sandwiches. That's the same as two of their regular sandwiches. My husband and I have seen them being served and they are huge. We haven't ordered them because we usually go on Sundays for our fish and egg brunch. Their overall prices are about the same as all of the other delis in the city.
Moving to Studio City
Yes, Art's Deli has a deli counter that is fully stocked. Yummy! And to answer your question above, they also deliver.
New! Best! Amazing in the SFV...
I asked my nephew who works on the lot at CBS-Radford. His show orders many times from Art's Deli in Studio City. He told me that they love the food and that Art's does food for other shows as well.
Challah in San Fernando Valley
NeNePie - Look at the date of the post you are responding to, almost 5 years ago. Yes Brown's WAS doing their whole/retail-ish baking out of that bakery in Granada Hills. But sadly the Brown family closed up shop soon after that post was written. And I think that the bakery they were sharing is also gone.
Brent's - cabbage soup!
Even though their menu says "Cabbage Soup", it is sweet and sour cabbage soup. The "sweet" is sugar and the "sour" is from citric acid put in the soup.
Drago for NYE -- Something has been bothering me
Beware of ordering in a restaurant from what you "remember" seeing on their website. Restaurant websites someimes do not match exactly what a restaurant is serving. What counts is what is being served that night you dine in the restaurant. It was your responsibility to ASK the waiter BEFORE ordering what was in the dish. Since you are paying for the food, you also should have asked all of these questions to your waiter in the moment. This is not the fault of the restaurant.
Art's Deli -- Anyone Been Recently?
I am not sure that this poster knows what they are talking about. Art's black and white cookies "subpar"???? Art's buys their Black and White Cookies from Bea's Bakery in Tarzana, which by the way the majority of opinions on this board seem to rave about.
Any restaurants open on Christmas?
Art's Deli in Studio City is open all day on Christmas Day.
Art's Deli -- Anyone Been Recently?
I beg to differ. I have been to Brent's numerous times recently as well. Both Art's And Brent's menu items and prices are almost identical. I find the food at both to be excellent. My husband's fish plate at Brent's costs more than at Art's, by the way. I also get Art's chicken in the pot once in a while and it is wonderful.
Art's Deli -- Anyone Been Recently?
I eat at Art’s Deli at least 3 times a week for business lunches. I find their food and service to be fabulous. I try to mix it up and depending on my mood, I eat either sandwiches, or soup or a large salad. The corned beef and pastrami sandwiches are huge and delicious. I am a big coleslaw fan and it goes with the sandwiches perfectly.
On Sunday’s after going to the farmer’s market we go as a family and my husband swears by their combo fish plate. I usually get one variety or another of an egg dish. On the way out we split a black and white cookie that’s from Bea’s Bakery.
