Ten Person Round?

Celebrating a friend's 30th birthday next Saturday night. I can get an 8 person round at a few great spots (ie Jar and Grace), even a 9 person oval at Craft - but am struggling with a ten person round. Anybody have luck with a table that size?

Thanks!

Ladies group dining in Napa

16 ladies, the Vintage Inn, and two dinners to plan...

We'll be there in August and I'm looking for a casual Friday night reservation and a more formal Saturday night dinner. I would love both restaurants to be close to or in Yountville.

I have a reservation at TraVigne and at UVA - but would love some other suggestions - and want to move away from Italian for one of the nights.

Any ideas would be much appreciated!

Farmers Market - what closes when - blind date help!

I was at the Farmers Market the other day and the Banana Leaf closed at 7pm - this was a HUGE disapointment to me. Considering going back for a drink on a blind date - and wondering if the bar or Monsieur Marcel close as early. If so - can anybody suggest a good drinks place for a blind date within the same area...

What's the new "it" dessert

So remember when it was creme brule, then orange creme brule, then chocolate molten lava cake, then flourless chocolate cake, then bread pudding, then, ugh, chocolate bread pudding. What is it the dessert of the moment...and what will the next dessert be? Also, where do you head for great dinner with equally good and creative desserts? I just chowed on mediocre churros and ice cream sandwiches at Table 8 - which both tasted like treats I could have found in the frozen food section at Trader Joes...

Vibrato or Foundry for B-day?

The ambiance, service, food and music are all fabulous at Vibrato. Vibrato feels like something very special and it feels classic. The Foundry doesn't. If you would like to read about my terrible Foundry experience...click here http://www.chowhound.com/topics/414161

What about Jamaca's Bakery on Pico, just east of Barrington. I love their red velvet cupcakes!

QUIET restaurant on Fri nite in WLA/SaMo/W-wood

I have been to Violet twice, and while I enjoyed both visits, neither time was quiet. The second time, I left with a bit of a sore throat from screaming at my friend for an hour. I wouldn't go there on a weekend night. For quiet tables that are far away from each other, I like Sonora Cafe and Doug Arangos..

great meals in san jose?

The SO and I are traveling from LA to San Jose this weekend (Fri-Mon). Looking for great dinners and fun lunches/brunches. In LA we love steakhouses and sushi joints that are lots of fun and open late (ie Mastros and Koi) but also really love trying hole in the wall spots that serve "the best pizza/indian food/apple fritters" around.

any suggestions would be welcome.
oh - and we are staying downtown (i believe) at the Fairmont, and won't have a car - so closer is better.

upscale restaurant

Il Sole is a good celeb spot. Your girls would love One on Sunset, Simon LA, and Koi as well. In terms of steak, Jar is delicious, but can be a bit of an older crowd. I think Mastros is probably more of a fun scene for them. Weekday lunch at Barney's Greengrass or The Ivy on Robertson would be great.

Wanted: Ideas for a picnic dinner at the Hollywood Bowl

if you're looking to save - try trader joes - they carry some of the same cheeses that bristol does - and for a lot less. Cube is also reasonable and has great cheese. Make sure to bring quince paste and almonds to round it out. .

Blue Velvet?

I went there too hungry and waited and waited and waited for food to come (even though restaurant was not busy). Once the food came, I was just too hungry to carefully enjoy the nuanced flavors and creativity. I was excited about it - but literally sat for 2 hours and ate for 20 minutes...bothers me.

the foundry have you been? what is your rating?

About 2 weeks ago, we tried to eat at Table 8 for their late menu, but they had stopped serving early and kindly suggested we try The Foundry. We walked in and were seated quickly (there were plenty of tables) but then sat with menus for 15 min - no water, no setup, no waitperson, nothing. finally, the manager or host came over and asked (but kind of demanded) if anybody had taken our drink order. We said no, and he did the following:
A) made a crazy, Incredible Hulk angry face (that was meant to be funny)
B) shook our hands and introduced himself (think his name was Jim)
C) left without taking our drink order
D) scolded the woman who was supposed to be our waitress (only feet from our table)
E) ALL OF THE ABOVE.
If you chose E, you are correct.
It was so strange. We felt terrible that this woman that he just yelled at was going to have to take our order...but there was no need to feel badly because she never even came over. Nobody did. There was only one other table eating in the restaurant and tons of waitstaff that were literally dancing around at the couter where they pass the food through from the kitchen (also feet from our table). Ten minutes after the odd interaction with the manager, we still had not ordered drinks, gotten setups, etc. so we stood up and walked out. It's literally blocks from my house and every time I open a newspaper or magazine it's getting another rave review - but I think this was the first and last time I ever go to The Foundry.

One Sunset, anyone been?

went to their soft opening last Friday - ate a ton. Table consensus: loved their scallops! loved the rubens! loved the Mac n' cheese! they have a seafood selection on ice which was ok - but we didn't think it was outstanding. They are very proud of their pizzettas...but they needn't be. The salads needed some work, and they know it - the owners came over and spoke about that with us. It's a sexy, fun loungy place to share food. Definitely a Sunset type of place - although the food seems better than most Sunset restaurants. The waitstaff was excellent, which was a joy, especially after a few new restaurants (ie THE FOUNDRY) disappointed in that category. I would return if I was having that kind of evening - but I wouldn't say it's a foodie spot.

Red 7 - Wolfgang Puck's new place in the Pacific Design Center

Went to a ribbon cutting and opening of Red 7 on Tuesday night - new restaurant at the Pacific Design Center. I got to meet and talk to Wolfgang Puck - which was pretty exciting....more exciting than the food...Guests sampled chinese chicken salad, peanut noodles, sushi, miso cod, etc. They also passed around the tuna cones (a la Spago amuse buche). All above mentioned were fine - but not thrilling. If the Cheescake Factory makes it, and they've been making it for years, should Wolfgang still be serving it?

HELP! mother-in-law's b-day :]

CELEDON - great for groups. delicious, creative food. Michael, the manager, is VERY accommodating - i had my birthday party there. It's trendy, but low key, and attractive inside. Located near the LA farmers market on Fairfax and 3rd street. Can't go wrong.

hokusai - new in BH

my friend had the omakase - and i did notice that each of the portions were very generous - i ate a lot off of each one of his 6 plates. they were creative and nicely presented, and the omakase didn't feel too expensive. We arrived within the happy hour time on purpose (5-7), but were told that happy hour prices were only available at the bar...that said, martinis were $12 each, which felt a little high.

the restaurant's decor has dramatically improved since it was Continental, although it kind of has the feeling that some strip mall/casual sushi joints have (boss sushi, fat fish) like they've put these heavy black table cloths on all the tables and have closed the blinds - and that's supposed to equal sophistication...but it doesn't. it doesn't feel original.

it's certainly not koi or katsuya, and i think for my money I would stick with hirozen or azami on a wednesday night.

also my tivo managed to screw up american idol....so that could be impacting my review.

Trying this restaurant tonight - incidentally was reviewed in LAT today. any thoughts?

it's on Wilshire and Gale in the old Continental spot - which was awful - but apparently it's been redone.
