I'm Leaving On a Jet Plane...
Next stops: Tuesday I went to the dentist and had an imprompto filling and a crown. Which did not make me a princess of anything and was therefore disappointing. I self medicated by going to the Mayflower Cafe Promonade and having Royal Tea with my best friend. I had the living social deal, which made it both reasonably priced and entertaining. We finished the evening off with drinks and truffle fries at West End Bistro.
Yesterday I went to Proof for their lunch deal. The house white was just ok but its only $12 for a glass of wine and food, so no complaints. I ordered the shrimp burger, which was more like a shrimp patty fried. The bite or 2 I had was good until...I bit down on some piece of metal. I have no idea what it was but once I told the bartender, it was quickly whisked away. The manager was very gracious, gave me some more wine and whatever else I wanted. I ended up with the grilled chicken with rice, with a sort of Indian inspired sauce (didn't relook at menu when I reordered). It was good - the sauce had a bit of spice, but there was a sort of slaw on the dish that cut through the spice. I also had the sticky toffee pudding on the house. The manager and bartender were appropriately horrified by what ever was in my food and very good about not charging me anything.
I'm Leaving On a Jet Plane...
First stop on the food farewell tour: Fiola for lunch. I stopped by and had their Presto Lunch - an entree and drink for $15. I had a glass of the Degani Valopicella and the buccatini with tomato basi arrabiata. The wine was pretty good and the pasta was great - spicy in a way that builds, and with plenty of good olive oil. It was really quick and the bartender was good.
I'm Leaving On a Jet Plane...
That wasn't me! Those people have 6 months, I only have until March 1. Plus I have been to most of Tom's recs. :)
I'm Leaving On a Jet Plane...
Va Paula - I totally agree on the "last meal". My friends and I are already debating on what to do. Currently, it may end up as a food/drink "crawl" so my last meal can be a little bit of everything.
I'm Leaving On a Jet Plane...
That's part of the plan too - my boyfriend lived there for a few years so we have to make a "last" stop. But I've never been to Blue Moon Cafe, it sounds great.
I'm Leaving On a Jet Plane...
Bar Pilar is closed right now! But great ideas - I went to The Source a few years ago and it was great.
I'm Leaving On a Jet Plane...
Thought I replied... but will put Bangkok Golden on the list. I have a car so will travel for food!
ETA: what specifically should I get? Is lunch or dinner better?
I'm Leaving On a Jet Plane...
Good call on the lickety split lunch - I used to work in VA and just never made it.
I am moving to Houston, so no need for BBQ. :)
I'm Leaving On a Jet Plane...
In approx. 6 weeks, I will be leaving DC after 6 years. In these next 6 weeks, I want to try and hit up all the places that I have been and loved, or not been even though I should have! I am looking for suggestions of lesser known finds, good lunch, dinner, or happy hours, or even just places that you love and would want to eat again. My list (so far, and based on only 24 hours notice) includes:
- Cocktail tasting at the Columbia Room
- CF Folk (never worked close enough to go)
- Fiola/Elisir lunch bar specials
- Ethiopic (am leaving for a place without as much Ethiopian food
- Little Serow
- Crab cake sandwich at Stoney's, preferable to get rid of a morning-after hang over :)
Also critical will be the "last meal" before I leave. What would your last meal be?
Note: I have the financial means to splurge but don't want to go too crazy for every meal. I also have a gym membership to combat the added calories!
help with "cooking chemistry" project
You should search this board for all the "failure" threds, I am sure there are some great ones! :)
One very obvious thing would be to make cookies - add chocolate chips to 1 dz, no chips in another, and lots and lots in the third. It sounds really simple but I am not sure how complicated you need to be with 6 year olds...
Mendoza, Argentina Wine Tasting?
I am probably not the wine expert you are, but I have been to a number of wine tours/vineyards both in the US and outside of the US. When I went to Mendoza, I used Medoza Wine Tours and I had an incredible time.
I did both the Uco Valley Wine Experience and the Lujan de Cuyo Tasting Experience. I thought the guides were very knowledgable and interesting. Both had worked in the wine industry and were fully of all sorts of information. I don't have list of wineries we visited with me, but it was well organized, with generous pours, great food, etc.
They offer private tours but I just wanted to give you an example of how great they were: there was a guy on our tour of 6 people who wanted to go to Catena Zapata and have the 2006 Angelica. The arranged for us to go there, taste that specific wine plus 5 others, and we got to finish all of the bottles. And that was just at 1 place. It wasn't my favorite spot of all of them, but I thought it was pretty great that the were able to arrange for us to go, sit in the cellar room, and drink a bunch of wine! (note: I remember paying closer to $110 for my tours but I could be wrong - still a great deal based on the food and the wine!)
American food used globally--
The BBC one is pretty funny. There are a number of mentions for cupcakes (based on the number of cupcake shops popping up every where these days, I guess I agree) and cheesecake. More perplexing are the "biscuit" recipies (it actually looks like they make more cupcakes) and banoffee pie! Never even heard of banoffee pie until I lived in London in college.
ETA: ...and there is carpetbagger steak. Not sure that would go over here in the US!
Need help with menu- Vegan mom, picky dad...
Make the butternut squash soup, but use coconut milk! Regular if you want it heavier, light if you don't. Most people can't even tell the difference and its delicious and vegan!
Need help with menu- Vegan mom, picky dad...
I made this a few months ago when we had a very picky eater over for dinner (she only ate steak well done, skinless chicken breasts, etc).
http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Pappardelle-with-Bean-Bolognese-Sauce-109256
It was really good and we didn't miss the meat with the beans and the squash! We also had a salad. We used can beans to speed it up. If you get some nice pappardelle, it makes it fancier looking.
Dinner guests who are chronically late and/or early...what to do?
This is awesome. Hopefully the invitations don't get mixed up :)
I think family makes it even more difficult than friends. I have a chronically late friend, who I have started: 1. leaving if she is more than 20 minutes late to a dinner reservation and 2. Calling her out on being late. Ex: she was late meeting for dinner and said, I fell asleep. I told her that no, she was always late and that it was disrespecting my time. She apologized and said she would work on it. Now that I am honest with her about being late, she seems better and treats it less flipantly (sp? is that a word?). Still drives me bonkers.
I only hold dinner for long enough that it is still served at its optimum point. I won't let myself or my other guests suffer due to 1 late person!
Simple things you can't get right
Thanks Mr. Taster, you made me snort outloud at work :)
How to approach baking a lot of cookies?
Thanks for the advice! I think for this year, I will try a little of the freezing of the dough and freezing of the cookies...a hopefully tasty adventure. :)
How to approach baking a lot of cookies?
You guys have saved me a lot recently, so I have another request :)
How do you approach baking a lot of cookies? My concerns: baking too far in advance means the cookies aren't as good, but there is also only so much time in a day (or morning) to bake.
Do you: make dough ahead and freeze as dough? Make dough ahead of time and freeze cookies already rolled out/cut/dropped? Make cookies a day or two ahead of time and frost that day? Some of this (depending on cookie type)?
General advice, and specific advice on a type of cookie is very welcome! We are having a holiday get together and I want to make a number of desserts, but am trying to figure out how to do this!
What's on your "Cookware" gift list?
I'd still get the plastic baggie :) Its really hard to keep from touching the ipad when my hands are covered in something - like flour.
CONFIRMED - Regular Le Creuset line going away in February!
I guessed number 1, but I'll measure tonight when I get home as number 2 sounds like the right answer. :) Thanks! I was trying to see how the 2 lines measured up (literally) and that stumped me :)
CONFIRMED - Regular Le Creuset line going away in February!
I just was looking online, comparing the Regular v. Signature. The dimensions (as listed online) for the 6 3/4 quart oval seemed off:
Signature: L 12 1/2 x W 9 3/4 x H 4 3/4
Regular: L 15 1/4 x W 10 x H 7
I don't get it how these are both the same capacity dutch oven.
Hanukkah Treats!
I agree with the fact that its a vague request and that everyone celebrates differently. I was just trying to get the creative juices flowing and start thinking ahead! Appreciate everyone's opinion on this.
Hanukkah Treats!
Thanks everyone for your replies! To answer the question of why its a mixed holiday event: I am agnostic and my boyfriend is pretty much a non-practicing Jew, but wanted to have people to our house and the holidays are a good excuse! This gives me a good start, plus hopefully it will prod the boyfriend into thinking more about it himself. So far, he has 3 drinks he wants to make, so we need more food to avoid everyone being quite drunk!
What is "good" cornbread really like?
I made a more "successful" cornbread for Thanksgiving!
What I did differently: apparently the type of bread we like is a lot more moist than the other recipes. So one with more fat helped a lot. Also, it turns out some sugar was what we were looking for, but not so much that it was sweet.
Thank you everyone for your help! I want to experiment with the other advice but wanted to get back to everyone.
Hanukkah Treats!
In a few weeks, my boyfriend and I are co-hosting a holiday cocktail party with desserts. I celebrate Christmas (in an agnostic, very commercial way) and have a definite idea of what sort of "Christmas" cookies/treats I want to make. My boyfriend is being very vague or perhaps lazy about his idea of Hanukkah treats. (He is better suited for being the bartender. :)
Anyone have any thing I should think of making? I know Hanukkah is not a religious holiday and may not have its own set of food but I wanted to see if there was anything anyone else would suggest so that when the party comes around, its not just candy cane cookies. And if there is nothing specific, that is fine too!
Thanksgiving 2011 Disaster Stories
I under soaked the stuffing - it was too dry but then recooked it so it wasn't a disaster.
But, thought the boyfriend was out of hearing range when discussing a delicate topic! Bigger oops then the cooking one :)
What is "good" cornbread really like?
This is great - I think I have actually made a more southern cornbread, with oil rather then fat. It is also bringing back memories - my grandparents were from Oklahoma/Kansas and so I grew up with the coffee can of bacon fat that was saved!
What is "good" cornbread really like?
For the past 2 years, my boyfriend has insisted on us making our own cornbread to use in stuffing. I faithfully follow recipes but it's a joke that I really just can't make cornbread.
But I started thinking, maybe we just don't like cornbread? I know there are a number of different styles and types so maybe what we "think" is good isn't ever going to come out of the recipe I make?
I have used either a full cornmeal approach or a 1.5 c of cornmeal to 1 cup of flour, no sugar. It's pretty dense and of course not sweet. Just wanted to know what others thought makes up a "good" corn bread!
what is your family's coolest thanksgiving tradition?
Haha - last year, my friend (who is coming again this year) got a knife taken away from her as she was dicing potatoes. I realized how much wine she had, so gave her a safe task...sitting on the couch :)
What the hell exactly are "Christmas Cookies"?
Hahaha, total autocorrect issue! I was typing on my ipad while watching football. Glad I could entertain.
