how many of you really follow "nutrition science"?

We have always eaten in what we believed was a healthy way. We were once gardeners and we eat a wide variety of vegetables, grains, fruits etc. Due to many factors, some beyond his control, my husband who has exercised regularly for many years--ran a marathon for his 60th birthday-- has gained a lot of weight and has a number of health issues, none life-threatening just depressing.at 73. It is the impact of the weight on his life as much as anything that depresses him. I have worked with a trainer for about 13 years and she has helped me remain active despite MS. He is now working with her as well. A life-long vegetarian, she brought the work of Gary Taubes to my attention. I am now reading his book, which addresses the science he believes has been ignored, a science he believes points to high protein as the way to maintain a healthy weight. His work has made her change to eating meat which she detests and providing that diet for her family. Not sure what to think yet, just wanted to mention this material in the context of this conversation.

When you grocery shop, do you buy...

As so many have said, when I'm at my best I'm very organized. I have used various computerized cooking databases for many years. Now I use something call Now Your Cooking. I have various cookbooks within the database but I'll plan from first from either the group of favorites or from the TRIED list. I also have a collection labelled TRY SOON. I look at the calendar--how much time will I have, are we going out etc.--then I check the refrigerator. I keep a stocked pantry so I check it and the freezer to see what do I want to be sure is used soon. The recipes I choose will create a shopping list. i will also have a menu plan that is always available for me to check. I check off things I already have and plan my shopping from that. I have a lovely set of cookbooks that I rarely use anymore. I prefer the farmer's market when possible, but I also use the luxury of Fresh Direct here in NYC.
I'm bad about planning quick/easy meals and always have been so dinner time in my house is a roving target. I think it was better, had to be, when I had little children.

Ad hoc at home ok for kosher kitchen?

Totally agree, except it is a book to read as much as to cook with

Ad hoc at home ok for kosher kitchen?

I am kosher and I bought the book for its many hints and technique ideas. For example, I haven't seen such a good explanation of cutting up chicken. I've just started ordering chicken from Kol Foods and they only offer whole chickens so this is useful. There are plenty of recipes that I can "retrofit", I do that all the time. I rarely buy cookbooks these days since I download so much from the web into my NYC database sotware. This one was worth it. And I already own Cookwise. And I, FWIW, don't like Alton Brown. Dined at our Hazzan's house on some Fishbein recipes, they were great but I still didn't buy the book. After all, Thomas Keller is Thomas Keller :-)

why is the Park miserable?

cafe luxembourg

We eat there often. Good solid pleasant restaurant with invariably something interesting to eat. Pleasant buzz in the room from a varied UWS crowd. Often hard to get in because its such a reliable neighborhood place. Although its not a quiet place, Nice Matin is much noisier. Although I think the food is more special at NM, Lux has a more relaxed, pleasant feel. Maybe its because I'm there often and it feels comfortable.

Best Korean Stews and Soups in Manhattan?

Any comments on Bann in Worldwide Plaza? Friends have made a reservation there.

Vineyard Theater vicinity

Thanks for these wonderful suggestions. Actually, my daughter and her boyfriend are adults, living on their own so we can go to any of these places. We'll stay with Steak Frites this week but try the others next time and let you know. Thanks again.

Vineyard Theater vicinity

We eat almost anything, but we have loved anywhere we've eaten. We do like Blue Water Grill, but its pricey to be our regular choice since we have a subscription for 4 (the other two are daughter and her boyfriend so we're paying for the four). We're going again to Steak Frites but we don't love it. I should say we like to eat relatively close to where we go to theater so we're not rushed. Thanks for any help.
