Countryman's (Rutland, VT; moved from Tristate)

I made my first trip to Vermont last month, and I had dinner at Countryman's. I'm sorry to report that it was not a good experience, and I'm envious that others had a good meal at the restaurant. It was certainly an attractive place, but almost empty (only 3 tables of customers, including mine, for the entire 90 minutes I was there). The service, therefore, was sterling. The food, however, was not good --not fresh, too heavy--and was absurdly overpriced. I could not recommend this restaurant.

1st trip to Vermont

I know to eat at Blue Benn Diner and Countryman's (from reading Chowhound), and they're on my list. Any tips for Rte. 7 from Bennington to Rutland? Then, I'll be driving south, probably on I-91 (but I can digress) from Rutland back to Connecticut...anything I shouldn't miss along the way? Thanks!

Dallas to Houston I-45...where to eat?

Thank you for the tip. I stopped there yesterday (Sun., Aug. 10), and the look of the place almost scared me off...no windows, no customers. But once I got my plate, I was happy. Good, Southern-style vegetables (including from-scratch mashed potatoes) and buttermilk pie. I saw the onion rings come out for the other table of customers, so maybe next time. Again, thanks!

Corsicana, Fairfield, Centerville, Huntsville?

I'm driving from Dallas to Houston, and I need a lunch stop. Can anyone recommend something to eat en route that isn't fast food or barbecue? Thanks!

Best (restaurant) desserts in Texas?

The coconut cream pie at Kitchen 1924 in Dallas' Lakewood neighborhood is OUTSTANDING.

Please give me some good suggestions for moderate-priced lunch/dinner of home-style Southern cooking.

Dallas food & other info?

If you are a foodie, then live within comfortable driving distance of a Central Market, and you will be happy. There's one in central Dallas at Lover's Lane and Greenville. Also, from that area you can find amazing restaurants of all stripes within a 2-3 mile radius.

The great tamale hunt (Dal)

La Popular on Columbia Avenue in east Dallas has long been known for its tamales.

best thai in dallas?

Here's another vote for Mango Thai on Lover's Lane (for a pretty restaurant in an upscale venue) and Bangkok City on upper Greenville Ave., with lesser ambience but terrific food. For me, Royal Thai puts more emphasis on the decor than the food.

Dallas - help me to narrow choices

Trust Laurie. Mia's (and its recent offshot Manny's) are hands-down the best Tex-Mex in Dallas. For a prettier restaurant, choose Manny's and order the brisket tacos. Mia's is funkier and livelier.
Also, if you don't mind strip mall ambience, Dodie's on lower Greenville is excellent. Very casual.
And, Nuevo Leon on Greenville burned down, but there's one on Oak Lawn.
