Best Mexican in San Diego?

I could not agree with you more that the whole topic of best Mexican food in San Diego brings forth passion, opinion, and many suggestions. The quest for very good Mexican food is one of our favorite past times in San Diego. So, I will offer just one restaurant so as not to duplicate the recommendations made in this string.
For an authentic and different approach to Mexican food, try Cantina Mayahuel (Adams Avenue at 30th). The Cantina is owned and run by an American artist to who spent many years traveling in Mexico and picking up recipes along the way. He only serves beer (Mexican) and wine at this time. He also serves Coca Cola in the bottle from Mexico and he makes his own aguas de fruta.

What makes Cantina Mayahuel unique and authentic is that the meals are served on clay plates, the drinks are served in the glass with the blue lip, and the drinks come to your table on the real decorated tin trays that are used in Mexico. The menu is pretty simple - appetizers, tacos, tortas, salads, and daily specials.
The food is healthy, fresh, and full of flavor. No cans. But the best part is that the owner/chef grinds his own seeds to make his mole. It takes him a couple of days to make the mole sauce so it is not on the menu everyday. He also makes cochinita pibil from scratch. And his Ceasar salad is made the way it was made when it was invented in Tijuana.

The interior decor is artistic and the walls are full of color. Remember that the owner is an artist so the place's look can change in between visits. What doesn't change is the consistently good food. Oh, what does Mayahuel mean? According to the owner, it means Goddess of the Agave. Provecho! www.sandiegotraveltips.com

Yogurt World Convoy St SD

Isn't O'Brien's great? And now that they have expanded their outside patio area, it should be even better. Love those $8 pitchers on Monday nights!

Back to Yogurt World, it is on our list to check especially before Pinkberry opens in Hillcrest (4th & University). We are seeing an increase in the number of these frozen yogurt or dessert confection places. Besides Pinkberry, Hillcrest is due to get 2 more including Dolce Freddo (Sixth & Robinson) and Yogart (University and Richmond). I have heard many great comments about Yogurt World and also know to watch the weight, so to speak. We also plan to check out the new crawdaddy place that newly opened in that same Yogurt World complex. www.sandiegotraveltips.com

La Jolla

Spending your anniversary in La Jolla sounds grand. Why not have cocktails at the Marine Room and then scoot over to the village of La Jolla to dine at one of the restaurants named in these replies. If you want to continue looking at the ocean, then go to either George's or or one of La Valencia's restaurants. The small dining room is called the Sky Room and yes, it is old school, but then again, so is La Jolla. Another option, sushi, is available at Zenbu Sushi (on Fay) which prides itself on freshly caught seafood from the area. If you like live music to go with your dinner, Bernini's Bistro (on Fay, right across from Vons) offers it on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. While it is not as gourmet as Nine-Ten and Tapenade, the service is very attentive and the place is downright cozy. Whatever you end up deciding, have a wonderful anniversary! www.sandiegotraveltips.com

best thai in San Diego?

After reading all the replies to this post, we can offer the name of a Thai restaurant in Hillcrest that has not been included in the best Thai discussion. The name of the restaurant is Amarin Thai. The little hole in the wall restaurant is located on Richmond near University, right next door to the Alibi Bar. The food is consistently good as are the portions. The service is efficient, the decor is pleasant, and the prices are reasonable. The food is not overly salted and when you ask for a level 9 or 10 in spice level, you actually get it. This is not always the case with some of the other Thai restaurants in town. Amarin is the Thai restaurant that Antique Thai took over at Midway and Rosecrans.

best thai in San Diego?

Yes, there are 2 Lotus Thai restaurants in San Diego. The Hillcrest location (6th near Robinson) was recently remodeled. The Gaslamp locations is located just outside the Gaslamp area on Market Street over by 8th and 9th. The Gaslamp Lotus is more modern and airy than the Hillcrest location. It also has large windows that allow diners to look out toward the Ballpark.

Recommendation for San Diego

Nope. The east coast deli's are the best. DZ Akins just past SDSU on I-8 is well-known and liked and Milton's on Via De La Valle/Del Mar. There is nothing like the east cost Deli's and some LA deli's.

Thai in San Diego?

This location for Amarin has closed.....

Thai in San Diego?

Celadon is opening on 5th Avenue across from Hash House... (not sure yet if it is a move or a second location).

Amarin on Richmond is delicious-hole in the wall. Great portions. Pt. Loma location closed before it ever got started. Bad location.

Spices Thai in Carmel Valley is really good, too. Packed often.

Best Ambiance for Thai- Lotus (Hillcrest and Downtown)

Fast food Thai-- Saffron on India Street-- well known chef/owner. Favorite place among many. Pick it up and take it with you. Su Mei Yu, the chef/owner, writes Thai cooking books. For San Diegans, she is now cooking up on Sunday mornings at the Hillcrest Farmer's Market 9-11am

El Indio is absolutely the best chips in town. It has been there for almost 50 years. Best chips. No question.
