Anniversary Rec in Hudson Valley?

Specifically in the Columbia County, Dutchess or Northern Westchester region. It is my parents anniversary in about a week so I think we are too late for them to get a recommendation at Basement Bistro. Any ideas? Also, please try to shy away from places where the reason you are recommending it has something to do with red meat since my dad, sadly, does not eat it. Thanks.

Anniversary Rec?

It's my parents anniversary in a week. I realize this is late notice but does anyone have any good ideas in the Berkshires? They like John Andrews but are looking for something new. The suggestions I have give them so far are:

Chez Nous
Stagecoach Tavern
Brix Wine Bar
Once Upon A Table

Any other good ideas? Try to steer away from steak since my dad, sadly, does not eat red meat. Also, I am open to suggestions from Western Connecticut, too.

Dessert Recipe to Pair with an Amarone?

I posted this on the wine board but realize I might be better off here.

I got a nice bottle of amarone for my birthday and I was hoping to pair it with a tasty dessert recipe. My working idea is something in the stewed plum or fig vein but I am totally open to ideas.

Best Burger/Fries on the Cape and South Shore?

I have been there many a time. I like it but it is relatively mediocre overall in the sense that nothing there rises above good. The thing that really drags this place down, in my opinion, is that two of the main diner staples are not very good, specifically the coffee and the fries.

Berkshires MA

There is an excellent diner in Bennington, VT which is within striking distance. It is called the Blue Benn Diner and is a great little box car diner.

Breakfast on the Cape?

Right over the Bourne Bridge about a mile and a half down Shore Road (first right off of the rotary) is a diner I love called Hollyberry's. It is nothing out of the ordinary where the food is concerned, good eggs, good home fries, but nothing crazy. However, they have hands down the best diner coffee I have ever had. My girlfriend and I go there literally every weekend.

OK, this thread is still languishing but I think it is time for another go since it is the height of the tourist season around here. What are your recent faves?

Inaho in Yarmouthport for sushi

I have yet to go but would also highly recommend Misaki on West Main in Hyannis. Delicious and very reasonably priced.

I figure this is worth bumping again since there is a clear paucity of replies so far.

Any decent chains in New England?

Good call on Rein's. Quite delicious.

I have to go ahead and disagree with you about Box Lunch. I heard nothing but good things about this place and then my girlfriend and I went there for lunch one day and both of our sandwiches were dicey, at best. We both resolved not to go back since there are so many better options in Falmouth. Perhaps, it's just the Falmouth branch but I was not impressed.

Where to stay (b & b?) /eat in Great Barrington?

Oh yeah, I totally forgot about John Andrews. It is by far the most sophisticated restaurant in the area. Totally delicious and always interesting.

I second the suggestion that Bizen is quite good. I would also recommend Baba Louie's which is sourdough crust pizza with delicious toppings (also, make sure to try to antipasto which is a must). If you are looking for good lunch options there is a nice Cuban Sandwich stand (I forget the name) and a great burrito place called La Choza. Both of these are located in the passageway that goes from the main drag back to the parking lot for the movie theater.

Oh yeah, Ana's is great and I totally forgot that but, even still, that is only in Boston.

Boston's best burger

Speaking of burgers, I have had a huge dearth of responses to my post on the New England board. Please head over and give me some suggestions:

Cheap good lunch in/near Lenox, MA--Love Dog?

If you want cheap and tasty and are willing to go all the way to Great Barrington, I would definitely suggest Baba Louie's as others have. Also, I would try La Choza which is a delicious burrito place with a la carte ingredients and a wide wide variety of vegies.

Best Burger/Fries on the Cape and South Shore?

Interestingly, I have to agree with Jerry Saywell having just eaten at the British Beer Company in Falmouth on Friday. I had a burger with tomato, bacon, and carmelized onions. It was delicious. However, the fries were not really to my liking, too large for my taste. In addition, does anyone really need fries and chips with a meal? Seems like overkill and for my stomach and palate it was.

Best Burger/Fries on the Cape and South Shore?

I have been living on the Cape since this past June and I have yet to find a great burger/fries combo. I am hoping you guys can help me since I love independent fast food and diner-style eateries. I won't lay out what I have tried since I want unbiased opinions.

Best New England DINER

I agree that O'Rourke's i very overrated especially considering the incredibly good alternatives htat are within 20 minutes of it. I also agree that the Olympia Diner is excellent although not very creative, just your standard diner fair (alhtough good muffins). In addition, one that has yet to be mentioned that is right in this area is Eggs Up Diner in Portland, CT. They have a great dish they call Southern Eggs Benedict which includes sausage gravy instead of hollandaise, a biscuit instead of an english muffin, and country ham insead of Canadian bacon. Yum.

The Cromwell Diner is also good but definitely not much better than average good diner food. Also, while it is debatable as to whether this is exactly a diner, Mama Roux's in Cromwell is incredible. This place is a great Cajun diner. One of my favorite place's in the area and probably a notch better than Eggs Up.

So, to sum up I would rank diner's in the greater Middletown/Central Connecticut are thusly: Mama Roux's, Eggs Up, Olympia, O'Rourke's, Cromwell Diner.

Breakfast Resturants in the Mid Cape Cod????????

My girlfriend and I adore a little diner called Holly Berry's on Shore Road right off of the Bourne Rotary. It is just a very good albeit unoriginal diner. They always have one or two tasty specials, the service is excellent, and the coffee is unbeatable. In fact, my favorite thing about this diner is the delcious always fresh and hot coffee.

Bagel World, Reading or Bruegger's- which bagels are more authentic?

Bagels by Us can say that they fly them in from H & H and who am I to doubt them? Actually, wait a minute, I do doubt them. Especially after I went to my girlfriend's parents house in Arlington on a friday night, went to Bagels by Us on that Saturday morning and then I treked into Manhattan for a family occasion that night and had H & H that very Sunday. After all that I can honestly say that the bagels at Bagels by Us are not only nothing like H & H bagels, they really just aren't that good.

Best Peruvian in 5 Boroughs?

I want to second this poster's comment that Sipan, while Americanized, is quite delicious.

Falafel

Jerusalem on 104th and Broadway is my personal favorite and one of the only falafels that I have had in NYC that stood out to me. This is, in my somewhat limited experience, by far the best middle eastern place in the city.

In Search of the best hot dog in the Five boro's

I also have to go with Gray's (especially over Papaya King in terms of service, price, and to a lesser extent taste). I, like a lot of others, was also underwhelmed by Nathan's (although the prepackaged Nathan's are the best hot dog's that are regularly sold in the major supermarket chains like Shaw's and Stop and Shop).
