dark loungey cocktail place - ideas

My favorite subterranean loungy spot is the back room at Zinc on Houston St near Sullivan. You have to walk by the band to get to the back, but it's loungey with booths and has a really sexy vibe. The music from the band is pumped in which is usually latin jazz or similar.

Cookshop brunch - what to order?

We had a reservation through opentable. Granted it was at 1pm, the height of brunch chaos, but it was just that - chaos. A horde of 15-20 people inside the front door waiting for or trying to get a table, your chair constantly being bumped into while eating, a feeling that they really want you gone cause they need the table, etc. It was exactly the same for me at Jane.

As I said, I like Cookshop and will return, just not for brunch. I'd rather go somewhere else more under the radar for breakfast earlier and have a more peaceful experience.

Recommendation for best pizza in the village?

Yes, Arturos! Old school NY feel, jazz piano playing, Village neighborhood, and excellent coal oven pizza!

Cookshop brunch - what to order?

I think I'm done with Sunday brunch for a while! I really liked Cookshop - overall impressive food, good service (not JV actually, at least this past Sunday), cool space, but the crowds just make it not worth it. I had the same experience recently with Jane. I plan on going to neither Jane nor Cookshop for sunday brunch ever again. With that said I really want to try Cookshop for dinner, as the fresh ingredients were some of the freshest and best I've had lately.

Unlike an above poster, I thought Cookshop's version of Huevos Rancheros was quite good. Not as good as the amazing 'Blisters on my Sister' at the late Shopsins, but still damn tasty. Also good was the egg scramble (w/ that delicious bacon) served atop big, fluffy buttermilk biscuits, and the baked eggs (yes, w/ bacon) were very good as well. Unfortunately we didn't have the beignets, wish we had, instead shared the Raisin Semolina french toast, which sounded and looked delicious, but was simply mediocre. Our server was attentive and knowledgeable, it was just the bedlam that comes w/ Sunday brunch that (especially at such a popular spot) that made it not worthy of a return.

Alone, hungry, and prefer sitting at the bar.

The bar at Five Points looks to be a great place to dine solo.

Cookshop brunch - what to order?

Going to hit the much lauded brunch tomorrow at Cookshop. What are the best bets/must haves? Thanks in advance!

Anyone have a favorite casual vegetarian restaurant?

How about Curly's Lunch on 14th St b/t 1st and 2nd Aves? It's a casual vegetarian spot I've heard great things about. Okay, I've never been, but have heard good things.

A Great Cheap Breakfast in the East Village

How about Life Cafe? When I wanted a super cheap bkfst deal I used to go there and get a special that ran I think 10a-1p on weekdays - eggs w/ either potoatoes or rice and beans with coffee or tea for something like 4 bucks. This was a couple of yrs ago, but I would think it's not too much more these days. Not outstanding qulaity but quite solid.

Casual Rest. near Trader J'oes?

Two solid places that come to mind very close to Trader Joes are Friend House for asian and Cafe DeVille for french bistro food. They're both on 3rd Ave near 12th St.

Lazy Lunch before a 3PM Movie?

I would hit the Sunshine and go to Inoteca first! Great combo!

Great sandwich at 'Wichcraft

I had a great Pork Loin sandwich recently at Market Cafe (9th Ave & 37th). It is served with smoked mozzarella and bread & butter pickles on toasted white country bread. Outstanding!

Tapas-type food, not too noisy?

I think ALTA is a great choice. Very creative and delicious small plates and in a room big enough to not be on top of other diners. In fact if you go on the early side, it can be downright peaceful in there.

Need a good place to take my girlfriend

Alta is great, lots of wonderfully creative tapas in a real "escape from the city" environment. Another place that'd be great for taking your GF is Apizz in the lower east side. Many excellent Italian dishes made in a brick oven and in a lovely space.

Shopsin's Closed for Good?

I would be very sad to see Shopsins close. There are many who criticize Kenny and family for their antics and eccentricities, but I have personally never felt as at home in a restaurant as I have in theirs. I'm just so glad that I was there recently to have one final order of "Blisters on my Sister."

Whatever Kenny does, even if it's a sandwich counter in the Essex St. Market, (I personally think he should create a soup empire by the way), I will follow him there for his prolific and mad scientist-like culinary chops.

Annisa for special outing?

My wife and I want to go out for a special evening that includes a mind-blowing tasting menu. We don't want it to be a place that's overly fussy (like say, Daniel), but instead with a casually elegant vibe and amazing food. I'm thinking Annisa but have never been. Any comments or other ideas?

Shopsins closing

The infamous Shopsins is apparently finally closing down. There are many who criticize Kenny and family for their antics and eccentricities, but I have personally never felt as at home in a restaurant as I have in theirs.
