This is NOT a whole foods. It's a Russian Armenian Store. Their Russian baker puts out the best french loafs & Baguettes I have had. They are a little denser that many I have had around LA.

The Little Flower Cafe is up the street from the Norton Simon and they have lovely sandwiches. Also I would recommend Daisy Mint, it's closer to the Huntington. They serve light asian food. The Beef Salad, the duck noodle soup, the Tom Yum, and the poached salmon are IMHO teh best dishes there.

Brown a little butter and then thin it with a mild olive oil.

just had those last fri and they were awesome. Also their Mussels in white wine were very good.

pacific lobsters are pretty pricey at 20 bucks a pound but they are pretty big and their fishing is tightly regulated. They are also seasonal, we can only get them when they are marching off our coast. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Californ...

they also have pacific lobsters right now IMHO I find them better than Maine Lobsters. They precook them but if you call ahead they will sell them to you live. They range quiet a bit on size.

got crazy cravings for soup this weekend. On Friday night my DH got take out Flazki from Polka in Glendale along with some great bigos it helped make a 16hr work day better. Then got goat soup from My Taco in Highland Park for Sat Lunch. That thing is so good, gamey and nourishing.

The Chopped Salad at 17th Street Cafe in Santa Monica is one of my favourite in the city. It has the right balance of ingredients.
The Veggi Chop at Cheebo- Just healthy and tasty w/ great vinegrette
The Lentil Salad w/ Chicken at Ammo- more filling than it looks w/ very tasty free range chicken.
The Hot chicks salad at Grub- spicy chicken, crisp salad, creamy dressing and blue cheese crumbles. What's not to love.
The Panzanella Salad at Colombo's in Eagle Rock- Perfect dressing with not to much bread and lots of capers. It's huge be warned.

for some reason a lot of ethnic markets stock it. We get ours at Super A.

prod a little closer to med rare but if you tell most kitchens rare on a burger that's what you usually get. If I say med rare most times they leave me no red/pink middle. I know it's risky but you only live once. Actually I should say my fav burgers are at home but that's another story.

I feel a burger shouldn't be that rich. What makes a great burger is quality meat with the right balance of richness and juiciness cooked rare. I feel that while Umami went a little nuts with the richness part they lack that good beef juciness I desire. So far my favorite burger in the city (and I have not tried 8oz yet it's next on the list) is Colombo's Steakhouse in Eagle Rock cooked rare.

Our (my so and I) ahah moment was when we went on a 3 hr hike up to a waterfall with my Mom with very full backpacks. When we got to the waterfall we then to an proceeded to lay out a spread of pate, cheese, smoked fish, olives bread and champagne with real glasses and napkins. My mom was shocked we had hauled all that stuff for hours instead of sandwiches & water and for us it seemed so normal. She had a great time though and then I knew I was a chowhound!

true, but a huge number are commercials and driving around looking for stars seems like a long shot.

Most of those film shoots around LA that you see are actually commercials and rarely with someone famous.

Unami is rather greasy/ overly rich as well

2nd Barbrix! It's always a nice scene at the bar and the bartenders are friendly. Great Small plates and excellent wines.

There are a few threads on this but they are all a bit old. Looking for the best Chinese place for Live King Crab in the SGV or downtown LA. It's a gift for the husband so a sit down dinner place with beer & wine would be good. Thanks in advance!

Agreed maxzook. I love the Smoke House but the food leaves much to be desired. The Tam is much better, excellent prime rib!
