Chicken fried steak in Richmond?

Any suggestions for that fabulously huge, crispy thing of dreams? Have only experienced the leaden brick variety.

Berlin food meetups?

This thread makes me want to cry. :(

New Yorker in LA looking for the best Indian, Chinese, and Pizza! Where do ex-NYers eat??

Does anybody like Tomato Pie in Silver Lake? No one ever mentions it but I think the pies are great there: crust a little too thin but almost perfect chew in the middle, and the (dusty/grainy) sausage pie with a Yoohoo was super nostalgic.

I'm from back east and I do miss those fat eggrolls with duck sauce and even having crispy noodles with mustard sitting on the table when you sit down. That said, wanting to eat NY style Chinese in LA is tantamount to asking for McDonald's in the south of France.

Places are DIFFERENT. It's what makes them special, not being the same. Try to enjoy that. Going home to have a decent steak-wit' makes me appreciate where I came from; but eating my way through Koreatown is thrilling.

zOMG Does nobody go to Tenerife???

Turns out we got shipped off to La Orotava for the duration, so we weren't able to exercise any of your recs. Maybe next time. If you are ever in the area, try to go to Tajinaste winery. Tiny and amazing.

I need a non-chocolate gluten-free birthday cake, TODAY!

Does anyone have any suggestions? I've been searching the board and have found info on flourless chocolate cakes, but that won't do, unfortunately. I'm downtown, but willing to travel. Thanks!

zOMG Does nobody go to Tenerife???

We will only be in Santa Cruz this trip, so exploring further won't be possible. I think the guachinche experience is what I'm looking for. Thanks for the suggestion. Between your advice and cleveland park's I think we'll eat quite well this time.

zOMG Does nobody go to Tenerife???

Thanks for the serious response. This is going to very helpful for my next trip to Santa Cruz. The last time (in '08) we were shuttled around to various places without any say-so whatsoever. We managed to eat at a couple little places across the street from the Mencey, where we were staying, a very nice modern restaurant/lounge across a plaza or park from the Opera House, and a sort of middle eastern place that wasn't very good. This time we'll be having a little more freedom and I'm looking forward to following your suggestions!

"thousands upon thousands of other British people"???

So..... avoid south island restos catering to English, is that what you're saying?

Favorite Trastevere Restaurants

Le Mani in Pasta is a favorite, but has gone down hill the last few years. Try the veal and the pasta with the fava beans.

I find the son to be pretty condescending. The meal was good and pops and the cellar were great (ancient synagogue), but the son's attitude spoiled the evening fro me.

Whoopie pie- crushed pineapple filling?

I remember when I was growing up in Pottstown, PA, at church suppers, the ladies would make whoopie pies with a cream cheese and crushed pineapple filling. I remember the filling to be just slightly tangy and a bit lighter and fresher tasting with the pineapple. Could this be possible? Anyone else remember this?

Recipe?

To migrants, ex-pats, aliens and transplants, what do you miss?

Popcorn, baking soda and Mexican food when I lived in Germany. Now I live in California and I miss cheese steaks on Amoroso rolls, butterscotch krimpets, Amish potato chips, birch beer and water ice from Philly, where I grew up, and from Germany I miss doener kebap, fresh breads for breakfast, coffee and cake being okay every afternoon, Bavarian breakfast (pretzels, sausage and beer), and breakfast until 4 pm.

Hole in the wall breakfast in Santa Barbara?

NOT Farmer Boy. Bad mistake. What about Renaud's Patisserie & Bistro in the Gelson's shopping center? The pastries are really nice, never been for breakfast, though. It's sort of an tiny upscale bakery hidden in a corner of a strip mall, and is relatively new.

Do you know about Cajun Kitchen? I kind of like Domingo's Cafe in Goleta. Surprisingly nice space inside with old timey diner vibe and mexican breakfasts.

Hamburg- Portugese, fish, for woman dining alone :( boohoo

Good advice. It looks like Nil is listed in the Slowfood guide for Germany. Sunday night family-style dinner looks really appealing.

Hamburg- Portugese, fish, for woman dining alone :( boohoo

PS- The breakfast at the Royal Meridien is phenomenal, and I've been making a fool of myself there every morning. Incredible views of the Aussenalster. Don't miss it.

I'm here until Sunday and am interested in getting out of St Georg for some mid-range (price, not quality) eating.

Last night I went to Kham, the Tiebetan on Lange Reihe and it kicked my butt. Cafe Gnosa the night before for a plate of potatoes and herbed quark (yum), with a glass of reisling. Now I'd like to venture out a bit, but don't want to waste a taxi ride and not know exactly where I'm going and if it will be worth my while.

Please help, darlings.

Cheap to Mid-Range Kreuzberg Eateries?

I think the Huenerhaus is just a stand, not a sit down resto. You can get a half chicken and fries to eat there or to take away. Very tasty, very salty. The Henne is a proper sit down place- dark and traditional inside, nice garden outside. Very limited menu as people come there for the freshly fried chicken they make to order (takes a while). So- beer, chicken, coleslaw, potato salad, schnapps, done. Last May my boyfriend had his birthday dinner in the garden there (this year, Oderquelle).

The Indian situation is strange. My SO says that they used to be better, more diverse, larger range of offerings. In the last few years they have become popular and hip, but the menus are now all the same- mediocre at best and so repetitive.

Vietnamese - there are a lot of places like this, but this is the one we went to as it was under the workplace. Fresh and light offerings, perfect for summer.
Hoai Nam - Kreuzberg
* Adresse: Skalitzer Str. 103, U-Bahnhof Görlitzer Bahnhof, 10997 Berlin

Chandra Kumari- an indian place that is better than most but you have to ask them to spice it up. Make them believe you.
Gneisenaustrasse 4, 10961 Berlin

Egyptian - dont know the name but its on the corner of Skarlitzer on Lausitzerplatz. you cant miss it.

If you are in Mitte, Clärchens Ballhaus has a beautiful garden, too. Ask for the pizza to be well done. Nice breakfast alternative. Close to shopping but not overrun by tourists (just expat moms and babies).

Eeeew.

What she said. Except that you shouldn't bother with Amrit. there is so much better food that you shouldn't bother with this place.

As for my favorite doener, I love Imren on Boppstrasse 4. The mid-block imbiss not the place on the corner. Yes, i know I sound like a broken record. Fresh real meat instead of pressed mystery meat and they roll out and bake the dough fresh for the Turkish pizza and durum doener. La Femme is a Turkish cafe chain that serves a nice Turkish breakfast. There is one near the swimming pool on Spreewald platz.

Near there is Cafe Morena for regular German breakfast and a nice atmosphere The place is beautifully tiled inside and they have nice outdoor seating. Good for drinks in the early evening also. If the place is packed head for Marx or La Femme on the same square.

There is a small Vietnamese place on Skalitzer right under the Goerlitzer U-bahn stop. It has a very limited menu but it is very fresh and hip. Like most M Voung knock-offs but in your hood and cheaper. On Skalitzer and Lausitzer there is an Egyptian place that is really reasonable and has an exotic eat-on-the -floor dining room.

I'm sure there's more. Will have to think about it...

Re: shitstorm- What does it say? Does it also apply to my beloved cranky punk pizza place on the corner Il Casolare?

Munich: Recommendations For Viktualienmarkt?

I like going into the big Halle and getting weisswurst/pretzel/hefe for 2nd breakfast and then getting apfel struedel for breakfast dessert. The soup place is good too. How about krustenbraten at the cranky lady meat stand?

Krakow!

Last night went to Orient Ekpress. A charming concept and beautiful garden in the back of the house, but the food ranged from uninspired to neglected. I had the trout wrapped in bacon with kasha, and while it tasted delicious, was completely raw in the middle. Not rare, raw. It could have been fantastic if someone had paid attention to what they were doing, and I guess that's why I was so disappointed. Plus, I was hungry and wanted to eat more than half my dinner. Those who had beefsteak found it to be too rare and yet dry at the same time. For dessert the berry perogi looked interesting, but we had to pass. In all, a disappointment, considering this was our last chance to freely choose where we were going to eat.

After dinner we went on to Ariel in Kazimierz (sp?) to join another group, and was also not impressed with the food outside of the freshly friend piroski. General atmosphere and service was grim, although the Klezmer music and vodka made up for it.

On the main square we stopped at Miyako for a light lunch of sushi and soup earlier in the day, and it was just fine. Totally functional for the purpose, and sitting at the square was quite nice.

Tonight, late dinner after the Film music festival concert. Will report :)

Krakow!

Wesele said they would take euro, but for everyplace else so far, zloty or credit card.

Krakow!

Last night we went to Wesele, and the meal was quite nice: chicken liver and apple appetizer, cold cucumber soup (thick and yogurty and refreshing) and a giant plate of mixed perogi- potato and cheese, meat, and mushroom sauerkraut topped with bacon. There were 8 of us and the total was around 125 euro. Unbelievably reasonable compared to Berlin or Paris. Good exchange rate, i guess.

Before we wen t to Wesele we stopped at Miod Malina but the table situation was bad for our large group. I think the menus are similar as they are owned by the same people, but if I had my choice I would have gone here- the atmosphere was more intimate and romantic despite its busy nature.

So far, so good Krakow! I've got 3 more days of eating and I'm looking forward to it all of it.

In search of excellent eats in Berlin next week...Brrrrr

Thanks for the Beckett's Kopf rec, its only 1 block from our apartment we took for the Berlinale! We've been in a Greenwich rut, out of old habit, and are looking to expand our bar repertoire.

Also, what is up with Sasaya? The donburi is good, but man, the sushi's lousy there.

In search of excellent eats in Berlin next week...Brrrrr

Every time I walk into Horvath, I can't bring myself to eat there because of the smell- of institutional cleaning products. Its got all the liveliness of a nursing home. Skip Grill Royal. Borchardt is a beautiful space, sort of Vienna Empire ( as is Einstein, original), but the food is meh, and the place is only good for spotting celebs and table hopping, so I guess it's a good plan if you are buddies with German soap opera stars and 80's pop musicians (ahem). If you do go there, the safe bets are the Schnitzel (which everybody gets) or the Irish steaks.

On the plus side, I really love Sale e Tabacchi. I think the food is great there- the sole, the vitello tonato, plus a beautiful patio in the summer, but the place has a lot of personal meaning for me. If you are going to the Philharmonie then you will appreciate that it's a regular dining spot for Simon Rattle.

If you are into the Modern Barroom for the aesthetics, maybe Shiro i Shiro is right for you, very designy, but a lot of places here are.

My general advice is to expand your search outside of Mitte.

Breakfast Lower East Side, recs please

We are staying at the Thompson LES (still great rates, btw) on Allen/E Houston for three days. I was thinking about going to Katz's one morning because we've never been there. Any other recommemdations for the area? Someplace that serves breakfast late, preferably, or an alternative rec for lunch, because we're flying in from Berlin and will most likely be wiped out.

Thanks, all.

I forgot to add that we will be coming in on a Friday afternoon, and flying out Monday evening.

please clarify: Babbo and Casa Mono reservation policy

Thanks, guys. I asked someone else and he said the same thing I thought. Bonkers. What a relief.

please clarify: Babbo and Casa Mono reservation policy

"We accept reservations one month to the calendar date in advance for our tables."

This means, for example, that if I had wanted to eat there on the 10th of Feb, on the 10th of Jan I should have made a reservation, right?

Does this go fro lunch as well?

Luke for Christmas Day? Also, CE decision.

You've set my mind at ease. We are sticking with Luke for Christmas Day, but moved it to mid-day. For Christmas Eve we're going to Brussard's, which has a German reveillon menu. It will be a lovely surprise for the German boyfriend.

I haven't been back to New Orleans since I was 16 (20 yrs!), and I'm really excited to revisit as an adult. Thanks, all!
