Where can I buy female crabs and crab roe in LA?

Crab roe: try a Japanese market near So Coast Plaza. Don't remember the name but it is on Paularino. Very fresh fish. Has lots of different fish roe.

Live blue crab often has roe. It is sold in the plastic packaging section where the crab is open/showing the roe. Catching female crab means no future crabs...not sure why we still see it on sale. Maybe smaller crab ok?

Crab Pot in Long Beach vs. Crab Cooker in Newport

this is a late late reply but I just saw this query:
I usually boil my own crab: 8 minutes per lb. (2 lb crab 16 minutes; two 2 lb crab still only 16 min.)Plain salted water or beer/white wine/sliced lemons. Let sit for 5 minutes or all the juices will run out.
Restaurants?...I'm still looking too. So far:
...good crab, great atmosphere on the water: go to San Clemente Pier/Fisherman's restaurant on the left side. "Crab Feast" is $35 but you get Dungeness, Alaskan, Snow crab plus chowder and steamed clams.
...San Pedro is a little grungy but that's where the boats bring it in. Fish stores and wood table eating for crab/lobster on paper plates. Free parking. Go to San Pedro Village website
...Seafood Paradise in Westminster...best prices. Big tank of live fish.

What are the best north bay restaurants for upscale casual $$??

lark creek inn...at the bar. Great food.

Hatfield's

wouldn't go back.

Tiny portions. High prices. Nice, but why the fuss? Good ideas... but steelhead was bland/soft and white with a weird, overwhelming smear of sweet potato sauce. Hangar steak came lukewarm. Almost no trout in trout appetizer. Coffee also lukewarm. Wines could be better. Barbera at $39 too juggy.

Needs more food for the price. I am a small eater but feel cheated.

Angeli Caffe

think Mozza too hyped? Go to Angeli. Keep it a secret.

MOZZA - Top Restaurant in LA??

Agree on Mozza.
Where is Mastro's? What to order?

Mozza-just got back from dinner-THUMBS UP!

bit dry and crumbly...not fresh figs but more like a better fig newton combo. Lemon cream topping nice.

Mozza-just got back from dinner-THUMBS UP!

you are absolutely right. Like the place but way overpriced for pizza.

Mozza-just got back from dinner-THUMBS UP!

Mostly disappointed. I love pizza in Italy which is mostly an airy crust with a few black spots. Mozza's pizza crust is almost there...big, airy, and chewy on the rim, thin in the middle.. BUT a little flat tasting and wet inside (though cooked plenty-- ours were blackened all around the edges and top). Looked around us and saw half the pizzas blackened too much. I think their oven is out of control. Screws up the flavor. Salumi and cheeses are mighty impressive but skimpy for the price. Best item: fried zucchini blossoms. Great wine list. Place feels good. Overall: Angeli's on Melrose is better.
