What's the deal with Guero's?
whoah, that's crazy that so many people have had negative experiences at Guero's. Maybe it is a hit or miss thing? Because I just went there on Saturday for my second time, and the Pescado Dorado (red snapper with garlic and special sauces) was delicious. I also like the salsa because it is actually spicy and not watered down.
Of course everyone knows that the best margaritas in Austin are Mexican and found at Trudy's!
NY Style Pizza-DFW?
Yes, I am always intrigued by people who recommend Sal's, and there seem to be a lot of them.
I just had pizza in New York over Christmas, and it was an awesome experience- Rosario's and Grimaldi's....still thinking about those slices.
Back to Sal's- I work at a place where they used to order pizza from Sal's every month for a group of 40-50 people. The general consensus was that Sal's is BAD PIZZA. Often burnt, with horrible toppings. So bad, that last month, we started ordering from Domino's, and everyone was so relieved to have not bad pizza. Is there some secret handshake to get good pizza at Sal's?
DFW - Breakfast Spots
I love Zaguan too! Their Venezuelan food is also very tasty. Last time I gorged myself on their cachapas (so yummy!). I'm so glad that someone else thinks so, the place always seems so empty when I go.
For really cheap and quick breakfast tacos: The taquitos (with potatoes and cheese) at Whataburger are amazingly good.
Chicago hound needs dinner recs in Dallas near Convention Center and Adam's Mark
I guess this post is probably too late for your stay, hopefully you had some good food while in town!
I think the food at Primo's is subpar, especially for Mexican in Dallas. Primo's only advantage is that it is open late (until 2:00 am I think).
My favorite Mexican places near the area are:
-Monica Aca y Alla (downtown)
-Rafa's Cafe
-Chuy's (can't beat their happy hour margaritas and appetizers, and they have good tortilla soup)
-El Rincon Tapatio #3 (for more authentic Mexican, less tex-mex)
Best hotels for Room service/bar/dining
I just went to Blue Fin a few days ago for dinner and was not impressed at all. The sushi was average, in fact, the uni I ordered was bordering on not fresh. The organic scottish salmon that my dinnermates ordered was also overcooked and surprisingly fishy tasting (in a bad way). For the price, I really did not think Blue Fin was worth it, especially considering all the other tasty food NYC has to offer.
Best Ice Cream In Dallas?
Personally, I think Braum's has the best ice cream. My favorite flavors are butter brickle and peppermint (Peppermint milk shakes are good too). Nothing beats their single dip strawberry sundae with almonds. Also, they have the best milk.
For ice cream at the store, if you are new to the south, Bluebell's cookies and cream ice cream is really good.
Upscale Vegetarian
2900 is another "smaller chef driven restaurant" that I always enjoy. I think there is usually a vegetarian entree on the menu, but I'm not sure.
Chinese food in Dallas Area?
I have eaten at First BBQ in Richardson my entire life and have never had a problem with cleanliness or service. I would also like to point out that the restaurant is based on the "dai pai dong" style of open air street restaurants in hong kong, which is characterized by their "untidiness". Another good dish I like there is the steamed fish with soy sauce and ginger.
Lee's Catfish makes a mean spicy beef noodle soup.
Dallas Steakhouses Review
Totally agree with the III forks assessment. When it first opened, it was my favorite steakhouse, but now the steak is overcooked, oversalty and the service is horrible.
I recently discovered that Perry's has excellent steak, although it is also a more formal restaurant.
Of course I love Bob's, Al Biernat's, and Pappa's bros.
Speaking of less expensive steaks, is anyone else sad that Old SanFrancisco Steak House is closed now?
Dallas - help me to narrow choices
Southern/soul/comfort food: Consider Mama's Daughters- they have the best cornbread ever!
BBQ: I like going to Sonny Bryan's on Inwood more for the character (somehow that adds to the taste), but I guess I would usually choose Spring Creek BBQ- and be sure to save room for some bluebell vanilla ice cream! Also, I recently had randy white's hall of fame bbq which was catered, and the meat was really good, does anyone have any thoughts on the actual restaurant?
I must speak out for Dodie's on lower Greenville, it has great cajun food. Even though they are out of season right now, I think Dodie's has the most consistent boiled crawfish in Dallas (try finding those in toronto).
Monica's aca y alla is just a fun place to go. The food is awesome, drinks are strong, and on the weekends, there is usually live music.
And I agree with people on Bob's, it is always consistent, but my current favorite restaurant for steak in Dallas is Perry's.
