Elk Meat - Recommendations/Experiences?

I have never looked for it, but I swear Seward coop has talked about Elk (or elk bones?) on twitter. A google search pulled this blog post about them having elk in 2010: http://www.mplsrealfoodlover.com/2010... and this Chow thread from 2012 says the same: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/8451... So maybe give them a call?

Best New Must Dine Digs?

jfood is back in msp? welcome, i've missed your reviews.

I too, was disappointed by the tacos at Lagos Tacos, I can't even remember which version I ordered. The patio was lovely, though.

2014 State Fair Food -- report the hits and misses!

Thanks for this, I finally tried the wild rice burger last night. I'm not a fan of wild rice, but I didn't taste that at all, and it was a great, juicy burger. Probably too much just before a bike ride home, but I'll keep it on my must-buy list in the future. Also at $6, it's a pretty good bargain compared to the rest of the protein-heavy items.

Also tried the Salted Nut Roll gelato, and it was quite salty, but I ate the whole thing. I preferred the mini donut gelato that I had on the first day - very cinnamon forward and a bit sweeter than the salted nut roll or summit oatmeal stout flavors.

Tonic Syrup (concentrate)

Sorry, I was not paying attention! Zipp's should be on your radar, though, they have a large selection of tonics and bitters and ginger beers and other mixers.

Tanqueray gin

Just checked the Total Wine website, looks like 1L of Tanqueray is $17.99.

Tonic Syrup (concentrate)

I've seen the Jack Rudy Cocktail Co. Tonic concentrate http://jackrudycocktailco.com/ at Zipp's, Fall's, and the Kowalski's Liquor on Hennepin. Haven't seen any others.

Tanqueray gin

Total wines has the best price on everything I've tried to price. Often by $6-$14 a bottle.

Korean in dinkytown

Am I the only one that has found Dong Yang not worth the effort? I've only been once, but was sorely disappointed.

I've been to Korea Restaurant once and enjoyed it.

Your Favorite Bakery

I love Salty Tart, especially her coconut Macaroons. I've also been really impressed with the Bars bakery in the St. Paul skyway.

St. Paul Farmers' Market considers move as parking, attendance drop

I thought this was a solid rebuttal: http://streets.mn/2014/07/29/embracin...

The cold spring this year, the construction, as well as the opening of many other markets over the last decade has certainly had an impact. I know I choose Kingfield over the St. Paul farmer's market most Sundays. I only go to the St. Paul farmer's market in the early season to buy plants.

But moving it seems really dumb.

Huarache

It seems like it is the same texture as a sope, just larger.

Avocados

I've had the black spots more often than I'd like (and I buy most often at Seward and Kowalski's). I find if I buy unripe avocados that yield just a little to pressure and refrigerate them a day or two before I think they'll be perfect, that I can keep most of the black at bay.

Places to eat around University of Minnesota - and candy?

I'd plug this article with Lightrail lunch stops (although you'd be travelling the opposite direction as the writer in the piece): http://www.twincities.com/restaurants...

Places to eat around University of Minnesota - and candy?

For candy, both downtowns have a "Candyland" store http://www.candylandstore.com/ They mostly carry popcorn and widely available gummies and such, but they do make their own chocolates and fudge in house. There are more upscale candy shops around, but they would be harder to get to via public transportation.

Pistachios

I just bought those at Seward and they were really expensive. Having never had unsalted/raw pistachios before, I first thought they had gone bad... I'll have to toast and salt them and see how they taste then.

Fruit and vegetables: best quality for best price

I also rotate quite a bit. I prioritize grass fed / organic / humanely raised meat over organic veggies, so I try to do my meat shopping at Seward or the Wedge, and Kowalski's has 1000 Hills beef, so those are the main three that I frequent. I was absolutely shocked by the organic chicken prices at the new St. Paul Lunds. ($12.99/lb).

But the question was produce. Usually I'm at Seward, so I'll get all my groceries there, and I'll end up with a $200 bill. For just me. For a week. And most of the time, they only have green bananas that never seem to ripen no matter what I do. I do find the Wedge has cheaper produce prices than Seward, but Seward wins on location for me. I have the same debate (internally) about the true cost of food and living wages and suck it up most of the time. I appreciate that the coops let me shop without thinking about sourcing.

However, I prefer some of the convenience lettuce products that Kowalskis (Uptown or Grand)/Byerly's (Roseville) carry, and some of the other pre-cut veggies at Kowalski's (e.g., their in-house shredded brussels sprouts.) I'll eat more veggies if part of the work is done for me, even if they aren't as high quality. Even buying the convenience products at the high-end grocery stores never seems as expensive as Seward. But if I'm at Kowalski's or Byerly's, I'm generally buying conventional produce.

In the summer, I'll hit Mill City, Midtown, Kingfield, or the St. Paul farmers' markets. I go to Trader Joe's every 8 weeks or so only for oils, nuts, and chocolate.

What about Wilde Roast? Not garage doors, but a lovely patio and river view.

Have Co-op Produce Prices Risen Astronomically, or Am I Just Noticing?

Interesting, as I find the Wedge's produce to be cheaper on average than Seward. Sometimes significantly so. I asked at the register at the Wedge once, and they said they own the organic produce distributor that serves all the coops, so they are usually cheaper.

Tablitas/Costilla De Res

Google image search tells me that you're after Korean or flanken-cut short ribs?

Seward coop sells them on occasion, and some times they have them marinated, but they are marinated in a kalbi sauce. Haven't tried theirs, since I like to make my own. Never had the Mexican variety...

4 hour early morning stopover

Just a caution that Surdyk Flights, at least in Terminal 1, doesn't open until 8 on Saturdays. I've begged to buy a yogurt while they were setting up and have been turned away.

If you have precheck or can figure out how to get to the "secret" skyway security checkpoint, I'd say it is doable, but really not worth the expense of the cabs.

Yeah, it isn't in Town Square proper. It's closer to the skyway to the new Bars...

Your Favorite Source for Roasted Coffee Beans.

I'm still sorting out my coffee preferences, but currently I'm doing a mix of mail order subscriptions (tonx, driftaway, etc.), and picking up beans locally at Peace Coffee, Bull Run, Kopplins, etc. when I'm out and about.

This just opened at Raymond/University : http://roundtablecw.com/ and I hope to check it out this weekend.

Nice to see Hot Indian Foods will be taking over the old Left Handed Cook's stall : http://blogs.citypages.com/food/2014/...

A few days in MSP, looking for some suggestions

Again, you are confusing Lyft and UberX with straight-up Uber: http://www.startribune.com/local/blog...

Lyft and UberX have users use their own cars. That is not currently legal in Minneapolis (but is in St. Paul). Uber is ok, and quite popular here.
