houston - downtown
Thanks everyone. Your tips are a great start. I'll report my findings.
houston - downtown
I will be in Houston, manning a recruiting booth for a teachers' convention, for four days in July. I would love some good tips on reasonably ($20 + a beer or whiskey) priced eats in the Downtown::Convention Center area. I'll be staying near Main and Franklin and will definitely need some diversion after my days spent in the convention center.
I am a sucker for high spice, well-flavored food. South Asian. Ethiopian. Also, love a really good steak tartare. Meal of 2 - 3 appetizers is often nice. Then again, a killer out of the way taco truck can be the highlight of a trip. Overall, I just want to find some good, local food. I fear the downtown::convention area might not be my best bet, but I'm hoping to be wrong.
I will have a car, but would prefer to walk or use the metrorail::bus.
Anything to eat near Broadway/Myrtle?
Update: El Pamador is actually Mi Paramor at 960 Broadway. I still don't know the name of the place directly across Broadway from the steps of the Myrtle station, but it has a maroon awning with tattered yellow and white text. Just had stewed chicken with yellow rice and (I think) pigeon peas. Huge portion that allows for leftovers, ginger ale = $6.50.

We just moved into the neighborhood in early April. First, I love Black Bean Grill and hope Jean - owner - is able to make it a viable success. Jerrod (the cook) makes some great wings. I have the tilapia twice and it has been great both times. I agree with blueeyedinbedstuy that the place needs more light from the street - we were not sure if we'd be welcome at first. Geez, were we pleasently humbled by how exceptionally welcoming the place is. In the last three weeks, I've had some of the best conversations there since moving to Brooklyn 2 years ago. If you are friendly, you will make instant friends at the Black Bean.
Next, more food. Yes. There is food in this neighborhood; just look around. It is everywhere; just not set in places that shelled out $50K for a decorator. You might have to point and ask about some things, but that is why I love this area. There is a Latin place (not sure of the name) directly across the street from the Myrtle/Broadway station - just east of the Dominican cakeshop and the liqour store - that always smells fantastic. I went in on Thursday for breakfast. At 9:15 they already had gorgeous chicken and rice and stews out. This isn't "normal" North American brakfast fare, but with our bagels and cold cereal we are missing something great. I opted for a fried sweet plantain (served whole) and a corn muffin (split, pat of butter on each half and pressed in the sandwich press). Excellent and only $1.75. Friday morning I went back in (this time about 8:50 am) for two con muffins & coffee (which isn't bad, but not great). $2. The place was hopping. People were chowing down on plates of fluffy white rice, 1/4 chickens and bowl of steaming soup.
On the same side of the street as the Myrtle/Broadway station exit and about 1 - 2 blks west is a Dominican place called El Pamador (? -- I'll check the name & repost) which serves from steam tables and off a menu. We stopped in there one night and pointed to chicken that looked good. My husband had some grilled chicken & I had stewed chicken. The plates were brought to our table along with rice, soupy beans and a bit of iceberg lettuce salad. We both had ginger ale. The food was simple, but tasty. $12 w/ tip. They are also open for breakfast.
There is a decent Mexican place (I'm from Texas and have been searching for good Mexican food) a bout 1/2 way between the Myrtle and Flushing stops on Broadway (will post the name later). They have EXCELLENT horchata and really nice, spicy slasa.
I am looking forward to visiting the Soul Food Kitchen (believe that is the name) on the north side of Broadway btwn Myrtle & Broadway. I am usually weary of buffet places, but that place is always busy so I think the food is probably pretty kickin'.
Good luck and reach out. The peole in this 'hood know how to eat - they just eat different foods than most of the "gringos" moving in are accustom to!
Best Mussels on Smith and Court?
Which version of their mussels did she order?
Will have to try Patois.
any good places to get a quick meal by brooklyn law school?
Decent Chinese on Montague is at Lichee Nut (SW corner of Montague and Clinton - just beyond R train entrance). Their sinapore mei fun has okay flavor, though sometimes a tad dry. Soups are nice. Very simple, good prices (also deliver).
Lemongrass Grill has a location further south on Court. Always pleased with their service and quality. Lovely decor too.
Mexicali on Court and Atlantic is good. People have complained, but coming from Texas it is pretty solid for Mexican in NY. Check out the nopalitas.
Best Mussels on Smith and Court?
I love the mussels at Bar Tabac. I've had their provencal sauce several times and it is lovely. I branched out with the dijon sauce last time and was disappointed. It overpowered the mussels and was simply too heavy for my taste. Sadly, I've not tried them at the other locations you mentioned ... but thinking of going to dinner tonight so that might change! (Love the steak tartare at Robin Des Bois).
