Bold Flavors in OC

Mil Jugos in Santa Ana. Amazing Venezuelan Food. Their Arepas are to die for. They have 2 types of aji sauces that also have bold flavors. They have great empanadas and meat filled corncakes called chacapas?

mangosteen available in LA yet?

You can find them at almost all the Asian supermarkets in Little Saigon in Westminster. Most recently I saw then at the Asian supermarket in the same plaza as Target on Brookhurst and Westminster in Little Saigon. About 8 dollars a lb. There is also tropical fruit stores on Bolsa and Magnolia in a strip mall with Wells Fargo that sell them.

Which grocery store in OC has the best sushi?

Try Murakai on Harbor in Costa Mesa. It is a Japanese Fish Market way better than Ralphs, Albertsons. Also when you talk about store brought sushi are you talking about rolls or nigiri?

Help Navigating the VEGGIE GRILL menu

I LOVE their Papa;s Portabello burger... huge chunky succulent pieces of grilled portabello mushrooms. Also have been ordering their Chipotle BBQ Chix Sandwich also. I gave to my bf who detests vegetarian food.. total carnivore.. He devoured the sandwich in less than 2 mins!

Nice place in Orange County for Pre valentines Dinner

Charlie Palmer- Costa mesa- Elegant sophisticated food. I believe you can do a Chef's tasting menu here for around 80pp
Marche Moderne - South Coast Plaza - Has a beautiful outdoor seating area that would be quiet romantic- Excellent food. Have had plenty of great meals here.
Tradition by Pascal - Newport Beach/Costa Mesa - Small, cozy, intimate. Probably the best French Food in Orange County.

best mexican in the OC?

I have been to this restaurant a dozen of times within the last couple of months and have never had a bad experience. I agree with Das Ubergeek that they may have been overwhelmed after the article in the Register. I've tried almost every item on their menu. Every dish is flavorful and prepared in ways I've never had. It is extremely unfortunate that they were understaffed.

Best 2010 Dine LA Menu / Experience?

I enjoyed my experience at The Bazaar. The key is to come with a group of 4. With 4 pp we were able to share 20 small dishes. Avoid Craft. The menu is very mediocre for dinela. I should have tried Grace. My friend told me she had an incredible meal during dinela at Spago.

Dinela 2010...is it just me?

Kerosundae,

I agree with you on some of the bad performances these restaurants are putting on. It's like they give you a lesser quality of food and service with these recent dinela visits. I actually canceled my Ortholan reservations after reading alll the bad reviews. I mean when you think about it after including drinks, taxes, and tip you are out over $65 a person. And that;s still a price to pay for a sub par meal. Like I was saying in my previous blogs related to dinela. I"m starting to think it's a gimmick.

Regarding Maison Akira though. I dined there about a year and a half ago and the meal was superb. Every dish was excuted with elegance and perfection. The service was attentive. I don't know how they will be at dinela but I had a good experience there.

Anyone been to Craft lately?

Sarah,

I came here with a group of 5 during dinela last week. I was really disspointed with the food. I was expecting more finesse and exciting food. Maybe because it was dinela and the menu is dumbed down. The meal was pretty much served family style. Some of the appetizers that came out were really sorry dishes like the salad. It was over dressed and looked like it had been sitting for quite a while. All the entrees tasted extremely heavy and over salted. Our dessert portions were 3x larger than our entree portions.. weird. For a Michelin Star restaurant I did not get that from the food. I have to say that the service was stellar though.. probably the best I've had compared to Jean Georges (3 michelin stars NY), Providence (LA), and Le Bernadin (NY). Not a restaurant I would return to.

Ortolan is *horrible* -- why do any of you say you like it?

I have reservations for this coming Thurs and am seriously thinking of canceling. I went to Craft last week and I'm starting to think that this whole dinela week is a gimmick and you end up just spending money on crappy menus and service.,. .so ultimately it really is not a bargain but a waste of money. Surprisingly Bazaar had a really good dinela menu. We had a group of 4 and were able to try over 24 items.

Mariscos Puerto Esperanza: Clear Sailing!

I am glad to hear that MPE has gotten more help. We frequented this restaurant a lot before the Register article. I have visited different parts of Mexico and grew up in a pre dominantly hispanic neighborhood and feel this place has the best Mariscos. We have tried almost everything on the menu our favs being their ceviche, fried oysters, and the Pescado Zarandeado. The Chef is very talented and I'm craving their food right now as I type,

Brasserie Pascal - input please for Dad's b-day dinner...

Jeff,

I have been to this restaurant several times and have always had an amazing experience. Each one of their dishes are executed perfectly. Our favorite items there are the Seabass... which melts in your mouth and the Duck I have not yet tried their Cassoulet but am confident it is also very good. I would say BP is one of the top French restaurants in OC.

4 days in LA

Definitely Jitlada for Thai Food .. I have been to Thailand and this is the closest it comes to authentic Thai food. The servers make great suggestions.. just ask for their most popular items.

I would sub Spago for the Dining Room at the Langham in Pasadena. This is Top Chef Michael Voltaggio;s restaurant. Had one of my best meals there last month. Very innovative and creative Each dish is artistic, delicious, and full of surprises..

Sushi Zo ..you will not find the typical salmon, tuna, etc here. Most of the fish they have here are flown in from Japan. He has a very exotic selection of fish. Can be $$ Their omakase "chef's choice" is about $120pp but the experience is unforgettable. YOu can do a search on Sushi Zo and see how popular this place is.

Dinela 2010...is it just me?

I agree. I notice that a lot of them have items that they can prepare ahead of time such as braised shortribs. Nothing really exciting. Makes you have second thoughts of still spending $44 which amounts to about 60 pp with drinks for an uninspired meal. I did however make reservations to Bazaar.. was there last time and thought their dinela menu was pretty good. Be careful they get you on the drinks $15-20 bucks ea. Even though your table is ready they make you wait at the bar so you buy drinks.. kinda tacky if you ask me. When we finally got to our table we notice it was empty the whole time.
Otholan.. never been and very excited. I think their menu is one of the best this time around.
Craft ... Menu looks blah.. but thought I'd give it a chance and maybe order some other items off the regular menu..
Will report back after my meals...

Awesome review cdmedici! I am looking forward to trying this place. I have tried Mozza in LA and have actually had Napoli Style pizza in Naples, Italy. Was wondering when a place like this would open. Very excited

Dine LA Restaurant Week 2010

I would recommend getting some "FILLERS" such as the Spanish Tomato Toast with the Spanish Jamon. That actually was one of my favorite dishes. If you go with say the canned seafood.. they are tiny and will definitely be full.

Mangosteens?

I absolutely love mangosteen and it is by far my favorite fruit. I was on the hunt for fresh mangosteen myself. I found quite a couple of fruit markets in Little Saigon that sell the fruit. The one particular one I've been going to is on Bolsa Blvd. It is in the same plaza as Pho Thang Lang and Luk din ky restuarant and a Wells Fargo
Here is the address to the plaza. The fruit place is right next to the Yogurt place and Pho Thang long. They sell a variety of exotic asian fruits including jack fruit, durian, logans, lychee, papaya, etc The mangosteens are about 7 dollars a bag. Make sure that when you press on them that they are not hard. I have learned that when they are hard they are bad and do not open. Each bag has about 6-7 mangosteen.

New Trendy OC Restaurant?

Looking to have a girl's night out this next Thurs. We are looking for a restaurant with good food and cocktails.. pretty open in terms of cuisine.. don't want to resort to Javiers or Wildfish ... Some of the girls are single and prefer a place that where they can "mingle". I would say overall 60% food 40% ambience. No steak houses... Any help would be greatly appreciated.
