Need Pizza Help!!

Hey, I'm obviously seeing this a little late. Thought you'd be interested in the article below (if you're still on the board!). Lots of comments about other places the judges missed:

Pizzeria Uno was great back in the day. Now, eh. Go for the mom & pops.

Lime Rickey lore wanted

Anyone have a recipe for those Wildwood lime rickeys? My husband can't find a recipe that approximates what he remembers. Any other old-timers who remember? Evidently they were highly addictive.

Great, Cheap Mexican Breakfast in Manhattan?

Hi JungMann -- I liked Taqueria y Fonda la Mexicana a lot a few years back -- thank you for the reminder, cause I'd like to go back again.

We went to Tulcingo Del Valle today and loved it. Great coffee, terrific chilaquiles w/scrambled eggs, and my friend loved her Huevos Rancheros (one w/red sauce, one w/green). Now have to bring everyone else there.

Perfect! Thank you!

Great, Cheap Mexican Breakfast in Manhattan?

I'm in Wash Hts, friend's in Greenwich Village. We've never had a Mexican breakfast and hope someone can steer us to a really good one anywhere in Manhattan. We don't care about ambiance as much as the food -- though we'd like to be able to sit and talk. We're meeting 11/30. All ideas welcome! Thanks.

Neighborhood cafe above West 96th street?

How far uptown are you? There are some great coffee places in Wash Hts -- lots of Dominican and Cuban places with great breakfast specials built around eggs and potatoes and plaintains and.... Used to get great strong cortaditos at Mambi, and there's a popular place called Tipico where I bet they'd let you sit for awhile. Those places are close to the A at 175th and B'way. Also a nice-looking place called Milan near there, too. A new place that looks like it'll be kind of a Nussbaum & Wu is opening up on 165 and St. Nicholas, but I don't know when.

Food Shopping/Cheap Eats in the Lehigh Valley

Thanks! Do they have a stall in the A'town Farmers Mkt? I'm unfamiliar with Moxie. Will check it out.

My son's thrilled there's now a Melting Pot (fondue place) in Bethlehem, but it ain't cheap.

Food Shopping/Cheap Eats in the Lehigh Valley

Enjoyed the lamb-y gyro at Aci Halal, the Turkish restaurant/grocery in Allentown (34 N. 2nd), and are looking forward to trying the vegetarian meze platter -- everything in the case looked fresh. We also enjoy the gyros at Gyros Queen in Allentown (1601 W. Liberty St).

Ate well on a Wednesday at the vegan Balasia booth in the Allentown Plaza Growers Market -- a friend and I split portobello bbq and a tofu bbq sandwiches. Though I don't need brown rice inside an enormous pita bread (more grilled vegetables instead, please?), the food was really tasty.

Had terrible soft-serve at Jack's in Allentown (24 flavors, though all they do is add flavors to basic vanilla) but luckily the fly topping didn't cost extra.

Swooned over the brisket at Tex's bbq in Schnecksville. We stopped because of the incredible smell wafting from their truck on 309. The man who ordered before us got an extra drumstick in his meal because, the woman inside explained, the legs they got in their shipment were too small. We'll be back -- they're only around weekends. Though we love Grumpy's bbq, Tex's just became another favorite:

5 Guys burgers were good; the fries are great. We went to the 5 Guys on Tilghman St; there's a new one in the Airport Rd. mall area, near the new Target.

We and now our friends crave the flan sold by the Hogar Crea guys -- we've picked up at their headquarters in Freemansburg, and outside a church Sundays on 4th St on Bethlehem's South Side, right near Sunrise Valley Donuts.

Sunrise Valley donuts (102 E. 4th St, Bethlehem) have amazing sour cream cake donuts with maple topping. We like the chocolate-topped ones, too, but the maples are our favorites. Wish they always had them.

Hope you all have a restful Labor Day.

Looking to try some great bone marrow...

Never tried Employees Only.
Check out Robert Sietsema's review in the Village Voice of his bone marrow app at Minetta Tavern:
"Consider the roasted bone marrow appetizer ($13)—a cow shin bisected lengthwise to reveal its quaking, gelatinous contents. The appetizer comes with a plenitude of toasts, a pot of mustard, and a minuscule lentil salad. The act of preparing your own toasts has never been sweeter."

Don't know if it's the best in NYC though.
Cheers!

Five-borough dumpling tour

Pan, sorry to get back to you so late -- thought it was Serious Eats but can't find it now. If I do will let you know. Haven't had kreplach in years, miss it.

Fort Lee Here I come

Welcome to the Gearge Washington Bridge area! My son and I are walking across from NYC today to scout the Lemoine/Main St area for Korean bakeries. Would also love some recs. If we turn up anything terrific in our ridiculously short 15 minutes there will let you know.

Chocolate Tea

OK, the Trader Joe's stuff is in bags, but if you're desperate. Not sure how subtle it is...

Have read good things about their kreplach!

Pepperjack Mac n' Cheese

Hi! Wonder if Pinch and S'mac on Columbus can help you. They use pepperjack as an ingredient in one of their versions of Mac & Cheese -- can probably make it with just pepperjack. Here's the menu (second page).
Cheers!

Fastnachts in NYC?

Anywhere to get these in NYC for Fat Tuesday?
Don't want to make 'em cause I'll eat 'em all.
Anyone? Anyone?
Thanks.

Pastry on St. Nicholas Ave.

Had to stop in D'Postre (west side of the Ave, around 162) -- it smelled great! Got a better-than-average guava-and-cream-cheese pastry and a really good beef pastry (75cents). It helps to speak Spanish there, or at least to try. Along with Esmeralda's on 181 (sp?), it's one of the more intriguing bakeries in Washington Heights. Will visit again.

mexican sweets

Whoops -- it's on the corner of B'way and 172nd, called Broadway Farm, next to the restaurant Galicia. And the sweet potato-coconut pudding, she is no more. Sniff.

Papusas [Split from Manhattan Board]

Second the El Guanaco rec. Loved even the plain cheese version. Service is slow only because the food is made to order. Haven't tried anything but the pupusas, but everything looked delicious.

mexican sweets

Found dulce de leche candies (about 60cents each) at the Dominican grocer NW corner of 173th and B'way in Washington Heights (boxes of fruits and vegetables outside help mark the spot). They also had marmalade sweets, guava paste confections, coconut macaroons and a sweet potato-coconut pudding. Really sweet, but so good. Service was friendly, prices reasonable.

Anything good in Washington Heights?

Hi--
You got some great recs, and we're looking forward to trying Joa.
There used to be a great place on 181 and Amsterdam called Genesis (Ecuadorian). Anyone know if it's still there? We also used to go to Cabana Salvadorena for good El Salvadorian (corner opposite Key Food on 187 and B'way which, BTW, has the best selection of beer and kosher foods in the nabe. They also have lots of imports -- things like pure pomegranate juice, eastern European sardines and grains. A friend just told us about a great meal he had right near El Presidente (Peruvian, he said... can that be true? We had a nice meal up in Inwood on 215 and B'way, La Estufa. And we love the burgers and old neighborhood vibe at Piper's Kilt on B'way and 207. Jou Jou at 168 just west of B'way is always good for a snack. Garden Cafe in Inwood was OK, but maybe we'll try it again. Have fun!

Food Shopping/Cheap Eats in the Lehigh Valley

OK...whoever recommended Jak-E's for panini, thanks so much -- can't find your post!
Loved our roast beef/cheddar/red onion, and it fed 2 adults, 1 child, and one very spoiled dog. The fresh thick-cut fries were delicious, especially smeared in the special mayos (we chose garlic). Prices are reasonable, given the size of the sandwiches, $5-10. Great place to visit after hiking the park on Jacobsburg Road.

Food Shopping/Cheap Eats in the Lehigh Valley

A friend gave me a menu for Asia (1102 E. Susquehanna Street, Allentown, 610-798-7777), said it's her new favorite Chinese. Haven't been there yet, but tried some of her eggplant dish which was blessedly spicy. We're here through Musikfest so hope to have some more good news. These recs will keep us busy!

"tea party" type place in nyc ?

OK...this is a stretch--not high tea, but it meets some of your qualifications. Have you already taken them to Chocolate by the Bald Man? Yes, it's a chain, definitely not a teacup-and-pinky place -- other negatives are it's touristy, expensive, has occasionally very bad service; positives are it's kosher (at least, that's what I read) there's dessert, hot cocoa,& sandwiches that can be cut into squares. Though I prefer the chocolate at City Bakery, I liked the cocoa fine though it's very sweet stuff. Our ten-year-old (boy) loved it when it first opened. I'm assuming if you call ahead they might be able to do something different for you.

Lehigh Valley topic hijacked?

Hi--
Up to a week ago you could access info on the Lehigh Valley (PA) on CH. This morning, none of the topics came up (e.g., Food shopping/cheap eats in the Lehigh Valley). If you google that heading on a regular browser though you can find it on other sites that seemed to "troll" CH, but not on CH itself. Does this make sense? Can we get the Lehigh Valley back? Is the search engine down this a.m. and will be up shortly?
Thanks,
Mooms

New York Treat for Wedding Welcome Basket

Congrats!
In case you want to go with more non-edible ideas, Zabars sells mugs and coffee scoops for $1 each (last time I saw 'em, at least).

where to find peeps?

They did have 4th of July ones as recently as 2 years ago (sprinkly stars!) ... maybe they didn't do too well? ...but you might want to keep trying. They come out with new stuff all the time. As batterypark suggests, try all the chains. We've seen 'em most times of the year at KMart, Walmart, Duane Reade and Rite Aid.

Inwood - Washington Heights Hounds Dining Guide recs?

Thanks, UF--I hadn't seen your OC post.
Appreciate the feedback pixee22. Extra curious about La Estufa--it got high marks on a neighborhood survey but don't know anyone who's been. Didn't see any of the others mentioned on CH, except for sandwiches at Terra Cafe.
Will keep snooping around. Hope you do, too!

Inwood - Washington Heights Hounds Dining Guide recs?

We picked up the Manhattan Times' "Dining Guide 2007" at Grampa's Pizza (love their "all white" and the greek salad's a great deal, BTW). Curious about the following listings:

Fibe Bistro (4055 B'way near W. 171)

La Estufa (5035 B'way near W. 214)

OC Bakery and Cafe (Edward Morgan Pl/Edgecombe Ave at W 158)

Loved this place a few years back, owner(s) super-friendly--haven't been in the nabe lately. Bet it's still really good.

5 Chicks - No Money!

I love Burger Joint too -- sometimes it's hard to find a table, depending on time of day. On the other end of the health spectrum is Whole Foods, (Time Warner 58th & 8). WF can also be nuts, but your odds of finding seats together might be better. No worries about splitting the bill either!
