RESTAURANTS

No.

One Day in Old San Juan PR - where to eat!?

I recently spent a day in Old San Juan, and I agree with cookedandpickled's appraisal of Raices. We wasted our lunch there--it's a tourist trap and the food isn't very good. Avoid.

I didn't eat at the others you mention, but the restaurant in the Gallery Inn served an excellent dinner, modern Puerto Rican cuisine.

My Vote for Best Falafel In Midtown, whats yours?

Gazala Place can be quite good too. 9th and 49th. Not always perfectly consistent, but when they're on they make a great sandwich.

Coney / Brighton/ S. Brooklyn for post Nathan's hot dog contest eating

NIce day (except for the Coors...though I appreciate the pursuit of nationalism).

Weird (minor, but weird) at Eton on Vanderbilt

That's OK. From my 7-year-old kid I've learned the riposte, "Don't yum my yuck."

Carded in our Mid 50s!

Agreed that this is probably a company policy and individuals shouldn't be personally offended to be asked to show ID.

You likely were carded for the cough syrup not because of alcohol content but because meth heads (and sellers) use it to cook up their speed. The pseudoephedrine in the medecine is a controlled substance, so pharmacies have to keep a list of their customers who buy it.

Saigon Grill - is the coast clear?

According to this website (as of two days ago), nothing's been settled and pickets continue Wednesdays through Sundays: http://sweatshopfreeny.tumblr.com/

Hope you see this post before it's removed.

And I agree with Simon about the restaurant's food quality....

The Red Rooster - anybody been?

Shouldn't be a problem. We went there for lunch this week with a seven-year-old and all was fine. And the oxtail dish was great (it's listed in the "Harlem Restaurant Week" box on the lunch menu--don't see it on the dinner menu though).

need help for birthday dinner

Great to hear that the current menu's so good. I've been only once before, but I just snagged a reservation for this week. What were the highlights for you?

Theater District Restaurant to take a vegetarian to?

Take a look at Toloache, the Mexican restaurant on 50th near 8th. It's more upscale than the Ethiopian or Thai suggestions, and it has a vegetarian menu (separate from its regular menu).

Trying to Eat Brains

I've seen brains listed on the menus of Cafe Loup and La Lunchonette (sic).

Fairway olive oil on sale

The oil's on sale uptown at least. The signs in the store didn't indicate an end date.

List of Ultimate Chinese food dishes in NYC

Yes, this is the same Phoenix Garden that used to be in the Bowery arcade. I haven't been to the "new" location for a few years, but the menu didn't change much in the move uptown.

dinner for 25-30 people by Columbia U?

You could try Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, if you want that sort of food. They might take a big group like yours. The restaurant's really only a couple of blocks north of 125th.

Mi Nidito on 8th Avenue any good?

I'd also suggest Toloache before (long before) Mi Nidito. And Tulcingo del Valle and Tehuitzingo, both not too far away on 10th Avenue, are worth checking out.

Dining Suggestions Near Saranac Lake

You should check out Eat 'n Meet, a very small, very casual restaurant with very good food. Otherwise, Saranac Lake restaurants don't offer much in the way of interesting eating, though there are a few places with some character and color (Belvedere, Casa del Sol...).

Solo take-out in Hell's Kitchen, $5-$10?

Has anyone mentioned Poseidon Bakery? They've got some good savory pastries--like spanakopita and tiropita--as well as desserts. Ninth Ave. between 44th and 45th.

Moving to NYC - Where to live for a die-hard foodie?

cimui, would you elaborate on the "hidden, Jewish bakery gems" in the 150s? I know about some of the good Dominican food, but I'd like to know about more variety up here. Thanks.

Looking for za'atar spice blend in NYC

I'm pretty sure I've bought it at Sahadi's, too.

Help! Need a great Thai restaurant in Queens for a large party on a Saturday night

Sripraphai takes reservations for groups that large, too. The food will be great, you shouldn't worry about that.

100% grass fed beef. Icky! Am I crazy?

Check out this link from ebbatten's post above (from about a year ago):

No more TILAPIA at Sripraphai!

What an excellent development--one more reason to celebrate Sripraphai. I'm always turned off by the muddy taste of tilapia.

On the other hand, has anyone else noticed the overly greasy quality of the chive dumplings?

Alose and shad - the same?

Apparently so: http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/shad

Your description of alose is very shad-like. I imagine the roe is eaten in France as well? It's a great springtime delicacy here in the northeastern US. Look for seasonal shad festivals along the Hudson and Delaware Rivers (and presumably along other migratory routes of the fish).

Policy Change: Survey Popups

Very annoying. The page layout is already plenty cluttered and distracting with the ad column on the right. I for one certainly don't appreciate an obstruction swimming in and covering what I'm reading.

The idea that these "popup surveys are significantly less intrusive than many other forms of advertising" isn't really a valid argument for adding them to your site. Basically you're saying: Things could be worse, so be happy with what you get.

cheap, decently fresh produce in Wash. Heights

I'm pretty sure that the farmer's market at 155th is kaput. The closest one is at 175th and Broadway, on Thursdays (and I don't think it's opened for the season yet).

Fairway is easiest to get to by car, but the M4 bus isn't bad if you don't buy too many groceries to comfortably carry. Just take it down Broadway to 133rd or so and walk a block toward the river. They also deliver. Citarella has nice-looking produce, but It's nowhere near "reasonably-priced." Fairway's is.

Dinner in Midtown West

Tragically, Grand Sichuan Int'l is closed.

Getting the "only in New York" reaction!

Sad to say, Meson Flamenco is long gone.

Orlando MCO airport

I know the area not at all. Any recommendations for good food nearby for dinner after we land at 6.30 pm? We'll be heading to Route 528 East and we'll have a small child with us.

I've seen vague references in searching earlier posts to Vietnamese or Latin "mom and pops," but no names or addresses. Something along those lines would serve us well. Thanks for any advice.

Search by date

Is it coming soon? (Or is it here and I've missed it?)

Theatre District Sushi

Shimizu is very good (51st/8th & 9th). I don't know just what you mean by "not expensive," but you probably won't get better for less.
