Upscale Diners

Hey Chow Hound friends,

I am the owner of a wine bar and a food truck in Calgary. My chef and I are hitting your town for 4 days in May (17 to 20) to eat and research a new upscale diner project we are working on. We would love a little local insight and any recommendations you might have.

We are staying at the Westin River North, but are willing to travel anywhere in Chicago to see and eat at the right places. We hope to eat at at least 12 to 15 breakfast places in our short stay.

We‘re looking for classic, been around forever diners, as well as new concepts that take a twist on the old school and use high end ingredients, chef driven menus, design, etc...
Hipper places that are more evening focused but do a great brunch would also be of interest.

We‘ve done a little research and here is our current list of possible places......

Delish Diner
Eleven City Diner
Bongo Room

What do you think?

Downtown Calgary toddler-friendly

Wurst is family friendly and I know they have high chairs (the upstairs dining room.) Borgo also has high chairs and is family oriented. I was seated next to a few tables with kids last night, in fact. Ox & Angela is pretty adult - not positive, but pretty sure they would not have high chairs.

Another factor for you: Wurst takes reservations and Borgo does not.
Happy eating!

I'm Stuck - Dinner for 8 Girls

Another vote for Taste. Their new menu is insanely good - try the tomato salad with pesto and mascarpone and the duck fat popcorn. Yum. Perfect for ladies night out.

Desperately Seeking Next Girl's Night Out Restaurant (YYC)

Based on your criteria, I think Jaro Blue would be a good fit. Fairly reasonable prices, gorgeous interior, good food. It is located on 17th Ave and close to 14th St SW.

Private or semi-private room for 30 in Calgary..

I went to a private party at Taste last week. It was perfect as they closed down the restaurant for us. It's a small, stylish space so 30 people would fill it nicely. Food was awesome (loved the lamb chops), great service. I would recommend. Oh, but we did a cocktail party style - they might not be able to do sit-down for that many. If not, I like Teatro, Divino and St. Germain for events. Good luck - lots of choice out there!

Taste - 1st Street, Calgary

I know! I am soaking it up while it lasts. Also, when I was at Taste last, they did have window shades to block the sun.

Taste - 1st Street, Calgary

I've seen posts about the new 1st Street rejuvenation, but I don't think anyone has mentioned Taste yet. I think Calgary needs more little funky places like this. First, gorgeous room. I loved the wood, steel, concrete thing they have going on. Menu - small plates for sharing, tasting boards and snacks for the table (pretzel bits, olives.) I loved my tomato and buffalo mozzarella salad and the beef tartare was nice and spicy. My friends and I really dove into the wines by the glass and loved every one. The list is small but super funky. When I went last week they were doing Spanish whites and Southern French reds. The server mentioned that they switch out the regions every month. A fun night out! Anyone else been in?

Teatro Calgary - Experience with Private Functions?

I think you would be surprised. The opera room at Teatro can host up to 100. Divino has two private rooms one for 100ish one for 40ish. Downstairs at the Trib would be a good option too.

Small Lounges in Calgary

Check out Taste - it's a new little spot on 1st ST in the Hotel Arts Expansion. Great small plates menu, very cool small wine list and cocktails. Looks great, too.

Stephen AV Calgary: Tribune re-branding?

The sign says TRIB - steaks chops chicken seafood wine beer spirits.

Definite re-branding. Sounds like a little bit of everything and heard the prices are very reasonable. Like a restaurant makeunder.

Visiting Calgary - BYOW Resto Recommendations?

Teatro also offers free corkage on Sundays, I've heard. I would suggest calling before you bring wine to any restaurant (except maybe St. Germain) just to confirm it is acceptable. A lot of restaurants do not allow corkage at all, even for a fee. Corkage fees usually go for $15-25 per bottle.

Dining at the bar in LV

Thank you, thank you! That is what I was hoping to hear. I was under the impression that if you ate at Bar Charlie, you had to order a tasting menu. I would be happy to be mistaken on that.

Dining at the bar in LV

My boyfriend and I are in the restaurant industry and are very interested in checking out as many restaurants as possible during our 3 night stay in Vegas next week. What we would like to do is pop in unreserved and sit at the bar for a couple appetizers and drinks. We will be in town for Sun- Wed next week and were hoping to check out L'Atelier, Mix, Tao, Bouchon, Olives, DB Brasserie, Spago and Nobhill. Do you think this style of dining will be possible for us in Vegas? Any other recommendations? We are at the Signature at MGM but happy to dine anywhere around the Strip.

Some Old Favourites (Calgary)...

Wasn't it a cocktail party, and not a dinner? The host of the party would have planned a dinner (buffet or sit-down) if their intention was to really feed the guests. That has been my experience, anyway.

Saturday Lunch? (Calgary)

I know that the River Cafe is open for brunch on saturday and sunday - they run the brunch menu until 3:00 and then switch to an appetizer menu until dinner. There are a couple of lunch items of course, but not much to choose from. Not sure about Brava.

I'm from Victoria, where Saturday lunch usually means a packed house and usually every restaurant opens. It was really strange to see that most places close here, but it makes sense downtown. It's just a different culture of diners.

Three Alberta restaurants make enRoute's 30 Best New Restaurants

Anyone try the food at Blink lately? I work nearby and I have never seen it more than a quarter full - even on a Friday night at peak time. I have also not read or heard of a good review, so I guess I am confused with it having a spot on the top ten new restaurants in Canada.

Calgary Cocktails

It's actually illegal for restaurants or bars to infuse their own liquor here. Against health code. Seems strange to me too. But it's also against health code to polish cutlery and glassware as well...

As for a good place to go for cocktails, the River Cafe has some very unusual cocktails on their menu. All the mixes are generally organic. Cafe Koi has some great ones too.

I've heard it's no longer being made. The woman making it retired.

Calgary - is there any late night Vietnamese?

I know that Vietnamese place on 17th Ave between 5th & 6th SW is open to 3AM. I think it's something like Kim Anh Submarines. I'm sure they have pho too.

Last minute bachelor party in Calgary?

It sounds like Belgo might be what you're looking for. Great beer list, servers in short skirts (female), and lots of seating to accomodate larger groups.

Best place for Chinese in Calgary

I love Golden Inn in Chinatown. I find the quality to be very good but I always go with a regular that gets special treatment and it's usually after midnight. I have had great dishes at Harbour City as well. It's all about what you order though.

Pulcinella and Fatburger in Calgary

I have spent a little bit of time in Naples and loved their style of pizza. When I first tried Pulcinella's it was disgusting but the 6 times I've been since have been fantastic for the pizza. It is just like the pizza you get in Naples. Duh - I know that is the whole point.

has anyone been to blink in calgary yet?

What is the deal with those cutesy dish names? It's not a "family restaurant" and it's not 1983.

Lord Sandwich (Calgary) [moved from Canada board]

The best Italian sandwich I've ever had in my life was at Caffe Mauro (Sal's) on 1st St and 8th Ave downtown. Sal is a genius with peppers and eggplant. I really think his sandwiches blow Peppino's out of the water. Get the calabrese and prosciutto with everything on it - great on baquette or foccacia.

has anyone been to blink in calgary yet?

I tried it out last week. Great modern and sophisticated room - food was pretty good and service was great. Of course, no one else was in there but I'm sure that will change. I like the concept of a supper club and will be more likely to check them out for drinks late night. Stephen Ave really needs a cool lounge and I hope Blink suceeds at that.
