"Hitting" on the Waitress (server) Is it OK?
yea, I'm with sunshine on this. so long as both are competent and doing a good job I'll pick the fun one every time. i don't find fun and competent to be mutually exclusive.
now i do admit that how the 'fun' is expressed is very different at We Are Pizza vs. Chez Chequebook, but there is still room for some discrete fun.
"Hitting" on the Waitress (server) Is it OK?
I was deliberately vague at first, because it really doesn't matter if it was a man or a woman server. The server was flirting quite aggressively, we weren't objecting. Neither of us was interested in a date with said server - for whatever reason(s), but as you said, I would have trouble understanding why the server would be offended by a POLITE invitation if one or the other of us had been interested.

just remember to keep it polite.
I beleive I have failed as a chowhound parent, and now I must suffer.
1. I think it is great that you gave him a choice of where to go.
2. I think it's amazing he didn't pick McD's or Pizza Hut or KFC
3. I think you are being awfully hard on yourself.
I can't say that Red Lobster is the be all and end all of good dining, but there are far worse choices. Clearly you have exposed him to more than hamburgers and fried chicken. Sounds like you have been doing a really good job. Kid's palates are much less sensitive to the nuances of food. At this rate by the time he is 15 he will be inviting you to places you might not have heard of. Good for you!
Hawaiian Breakfast Burritos on Oahu
I agree with you about McD's breakfast food. I'm not an egg fan, but I love the sausage muffin and sausage biscuit. Their pancakes are good too. I've not tried the burritos because they have egg in them.

mc D's does sell breakfast burritos at some locations on oahu.

the new cafe at queens surf is open from 7am, it may have something like that, but it would definitely have a loco moko
Seafood and farmers markets near Honolulu
In chinatown at the corner of King and Kekaulike street is the old Oahu market. Start there and in the surrounding blocks you will find fresh fish, fresh produce, etc. Not quite a farmer's market, but similar.
The best known farmer's market is the one at Kapiolani Community College on Saturday Mornings. There is another one on Wednesday afternoons at the Neil Blaisdel Center at Ward and Kapiolani.
For fresh fish you can also check out Tamashiro Market, Monarch Seafood, Nico's (next to/in the restaurant). You can also check threads on the Hawaii board about the best places for Poke.
The farmer's market at Ward (Auahi Street) is much diminished, and mostly fish and hawaiian food, not much in the way of produce.
Honolulu has a fish auction and much of the fresh fish on Oahu goes through there. It starts at 5:30am, and is a wholesale auction, but fascinating to watch.

i think you are going to have an easier time with a loco moko
refused to eat, out of line?
let me reiterate
the hamburgers were originally for a barbecue on saturday. they sat out in the open air at ambient temperature, say 85f, for about 7 hours (not kept in a cooler or anything). they then went into the fridge for 18 hours. after that they were put in a pan and brought up to about 110-120, and then left to cool to 85 for about 3 more hours on sunday afternoon.
1. is this dangerous?
2. as an invited guest do i have an obligation to eat whats served?
2. do i have an obligation to tell other guests that the meat is questionable?
best thai in Waikiki
glad to hear a good review on this from you, i've heard otherwise from time to time. i trust your judgement more.
best sushi in honolulu
yeah, well he's not overly fond of Gaijin. i won't be back of my own accord.
Inexpensive Chinese Banquet in Honolulu
you might check with Duk-Kee in Kaimuki, a couple of blocks from Happy Day. The women at the church I go to like happy day for the atmosphere and the food, the men like Duk Kee for the food. More the old kine chinese restaurant without any of the trappings. if you want to have an excuse to get out of wakikiki and drive... Pah-keh's in Kaneohe is a local favorite. I would also check On-On restaurant at McCully and Young, not far from waikiki, Kirin on Beretania near University (more upscale but a favorite among Hong Kong Chinese here.) Little Village Noodle House is in Chinatown, again more upscale, but reasonable.
Fresh seafood/shrimp trucks Oahu
blue water isn't bad, although I'm pretty sure they have moved away from the spot on Kuhio... the neighborhood board was going after them big time for some stupid reason or other. I've heard they moved into the international marketplace, but it isn't a truck. They may still have a truck on Kapiolani a half block west (ewa) of atkinson, but I'm not sure about that either.
best thai in Waikiki
I'm not at all sure we have excellent thai food any more here.
I like a place on South King named Pae Thai, a Thai friend who used to live here liked it best - not in Waikiki, but not too far for a reasonable cab ride. Spices in Moiliili (mo-ili-ili) is good, a mix of Thai and Lao food. Nice little neighborhood place - but I doubt it would be labeled exceptional. Another one I really like - in spite of the name - is To Thai For. Again not in Waikiki, but different menu offerings and different recipes from most Thai food here, maybe from a different region of Thailand. And their spicy really is spicy.
The local favorite Bangkok Chef has opened two branches, and as a result all three are poorer for the expansion. Nuuanu is still the best, but thats not near Waikiki and there is virtually no seating. Avoid the one on Nimitz - horrible horrible horrible.
Once upon a time, long before their Waikiki location opened, Keos was really good. Over time it became more and more mainstream. It isn't bad Thai still, but it's not exceptional. Keoni's started out as a branch of Keo's but it split off, and from what I've tasted, not for the better. Singha in Waikiki has never been anything special. Keo's and Singha both have a nice ambiance.
Phuket Thai has a bit more selection than many places, but I haven't found any of it to be above average. Mekong II, Chiang-Mai, Champa Thai are all perfectly fine, but nothing unusual. Siam Garden gets reviews from the best to the worst. I've never been, and even from what I've heard, the food is inconsistent.
Say what?? Cooking comments that baffle you
I have friends who don't eat leftovers. Mostly they were raised eating leftovers ad-nauseum, things that were not well prepared to begin with, and haphazardly tossed together to make a meal as leftovers, often as not poorly repurposed (teriyaki sauce does nothing to help a bad tuna casserole.)
If you don't eat leftovers and you don't keep food in the freezer, and you know good local 'cheap eats' kinds of places to go, it can be a toss up between going out and staying home.
But if you are on a budget, seriously NEED to keep costs down, you can always eat cheaper at home.

in response to a number of comments
i use the oven infrequently, but it does get used. my friend was raised in asia and there was no oven in his house growing up, just a two burner portable gas ring. at the time he was in his early/mid 20's and had been in the US about a year and a half. Most of that time was spent with people from his own culture.
He knew it was an oven, he just never envisioned that it would get used for anything other than a holiday - like that american one where you cook the "big chicken" after harvest time.
i did have a couple of baking sheets in there, sometimes i remember to take them out, sometimes I don't, but he saw things 'stored' in there so he figured... hey, this is a good place to put things.
and yes, in addition to feeling bad, he felt really dumb afterwards. but I'm certainly not gonna be the one throwing the first stone at someone for doing things that seem incredibly stupid after the fact. Just check out some of my old postings about dumb things we do in the kitchen (and that's just one room.)
oh, and he had no idea that you pre-heat an oven before you put food in it. he couldn't figure out why or how i would turn the oven on without knowing what was in there.
Burnt plastic in a stainless steel pot [moved from Not about Food board]
heat carefully and evenly or you will warp the pan.

seems that for many if it isn't something they can cook at home, then it's fancy. So why not stay at home? Ah well. And yes, I can cook an excellent hamburger, but still like to go out for one. Hypocrite? Moi? You becha.
Say what?? Cooking comments that baffle you
Oh, i knew he had cleaned the kitchen, he was very proud of it. I never thought to ask where he put things, much less think that they may be hiding in that fancy cabinet under the burners. He honestly had never seen anyone use an oven before. He was nearly as stunned as I was.
Report - Honolulu Buffet - Hawaii Prince Hotel
thanks for the report. Haven't been to the buffet there in a few years, glad to hear it is still a winner.
Good eats near Outrigger Reef (Oahu)
people seem to be forgetting the 'reasonable cost' mentioned by the OP. I like hanks, but for hot dog's its not a reasonable cost - no matter how good that lobster dog is. Hank's isn't outrageous, but not a bargain by any stretch.
And if you stay in the bounds of Waikiki, not much is. If you want Hawaiian food try Ono's or Haili's. Both on Kapahulu within walk/cab/bus distance.
At the bottom of Kapahulu avenue in the Waikiki Grand is Teddy's Bigger Burgers. Not too high a price, and about 1000 times better than that abomination known as cheeseburgers in paradise.
Near Puka Dogs (not wonderful, not awful) is Fatty's Chinese Kitchen. Very reasonable, but mostly take-out. The food court at the International Market Place all in all isn't too bad food wise, or price wise for waikiki.
Will you have visitor passes for the bus? there are several decent places at Ala Moana Center, and more sell at Ward Centers. At ward especially consider Kakaako Kitchen (ka-ka-a-ko) and Big City Diner. Bucca De Beppo is also popular, but I've never been impressed. Unfortunately its difficult to get from Waikiki to Kaimuki on the bus, which has an amazing collection of restaurants in about 8-10 blocks in almost any price range.
American Sushi in Oahu??
what he said.
but I'm assuming you aren't going to just be ordering philadelphia rolls and california rolls, especially the former.
origin of the loco moco
you know... they REALLY do need to add a "like" button on chowhound.
How far are you willing to drive for a good restaurant?
In Honolulu it is hard to drive more than about 45 minutes, except in rush hour, and I'm not driving more than 7 miles at that time of day. But I have driven 45 minutes for meals that were only special because we decided it was worth the trip for no particular reason. Heck, i've driven that far on a sunday afternoon upon finding out that someone was here for over a week and never got to Matsumoto's for shave ice and they regretted it. Not exactly a special event, and I wasn't on vacation.
When I am on vacation I often drive for an hour to an hour and a half to meet friends for dinner someplace they particularly like. While it may be a special event for me, these are drives that they don't consider unusual. Maybe not a daily occurrence, but well within their normal range.
Until recently I couldn't get a decent pastrami sandwich here in Honolulu. So yes, I would drive 45 minutes across LA to get to Cantor's for a midnight snack (Langer's is also great, but not open 24 hours.) I suspect i would do the same even if I lived there.

lol, and shrimp that is less than fresh can be very shrimpy-but not in a good way.
Say what?? Cooking comments that baffle you
Not sure about things where you are foiegras, but here in Honolulu 'organic' is roughly translated as 'triple the price'. At the same time local produce is only twice as much as what is shipped in from the mainland. But I am guessing your shopper was put off by the prices more than the organic concept. I love shopping at the farmer's market here, but I know I'm going to be spending quite a bit more for MOST (not all) things than I would if I were shopping at Safeway. I'm not saying that it isn't worth it. For some people it is, for others it isn't.

in the US you can find turkey, whole or by piece, year round most places. But its the prices at thanksgiving that make the difference. Turkey pieces in the $3 per pound range, but a whole turkey for under a dollar a pound.
Shredding Cabbage This Fine
no way i could do it, but i've seen it done with a knife. if i ever moved a knife that fast i'd be down to about two knuckles on each finger.
