TGI Fridays opening in White Plains ?

I do appreciate having this hit-list of spots though. Will make a mission to try a number of the ones I don't know.

TGI Fridays opening in White Plains ?

"I think this is Westchester's sole Turkish" - just as a fact check: there's Turkish Meze in Mamaroneck and Turquoise in Larchmont. I like both better than Turkish Cuisine though it's been years since I've tried the White Plains or Larchmont establishments out of those three (and I live right near the Larchmont one).

I like (a little to a whole lot) some of the places you mention and have yet to try a fair number of the others - just not in White Plains as often as I used to be. I loved me some Sunshine Deli when it was around but haven't been very excited about a White Plains spot since then.

Beacon NY Restaurants

Ok, this is the only lunch I've eaten at in Beacon but Poppy's is a nice burger joint using local, grass-fed beef. And you can walk across the street afterwards for Zora Dora which specializes in popsicles with all kinds of interesting flavors. That's a pretty great combo in my opinion.

Meyer lemons are back in New Rochelle

Actually, pricier than I thought - $6.99 for the 4 pound box.

Meyer lemons are back in New Rochelle

It's a 4 lb box and I think it was $5 or $6. Sorry I don't remember for sure but I'll double check next time I'm there.

They have them at Costco in New Rochelle right now too. I bought a box last night. I have no idea yet what I'm going to do with them.

kid-friendly lunch / brunch suggestions in or near pleasantville?

i see that place gets nice praise but does it have room for 8 people to sit and eat?

kid-friendly lunch / brunch suggestions in or near pleasantville?

We're taking the kids, their grandparents and an aunt and uncle up to pleasantville this Sunday for It's A Wonderful Life (showing at 12pm). I'm really unfamiliar with the area but would like to know some good options for a family lunch / brunch for immediately afterwards. Our kids are 4 and 8..... and I'm looking for some place that's comfortable and not too pricey.

I guess near the theater would be ideal but I'm open to considering the surrounding towns as well.

Thanks!

Lunch near Beacon, NY?

Took the kids to Beacon a few weeks ago and we had a great meal at poppy's and zora dora is really something special. Ay dios mio at the wait we had for food at poppy's though. I don't know if that's typical there or just our luck but it was way too long to have to sit for burgers and fries - even awesome ones.

Greek Festival at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, New Rochelle

It starts tonight and runs through the weekend. Moussaka time!

They also have rides to keep the kids entertained.

Transplant to Westchester Co. seeks tips on family friendly ethnic food without the Westchester attitude and prices.

I find Turkish Meze in Mamaroneck superior to the Turkish place on Mamaroneck Ave in White Plains. Nice decor and service too which cannot be said about the place in WP. Some of the entrees are pricey but they have good $9.99 lunch deals and i think 20 or 30 percent off for takeout orders.

And Rani Mahal is good for Indian in Mamaroneck. Friendly service and reasonably priced for a sit down place in westchester.

If you're willing to go a bit seedy locale-wise check the Sunshine deli near you in White Plains for good no-frills Mexican. Or if you're willing to drive some for an experience... the El Charrito taco truck in Stamford CT is probably just within your 30 minute drive specification and definitely worth checking. Very affordable, friendly and delicious.

Also in Mamaroneck I've been singing praises of Bertha's Kitchen - a Guatemalan grill leasing space in the country general store. Very good for pupusas, tamales, etc. Very affordable and friendly but the seating in the back looks really unappealing, so it's a takeout place. Also friendly + affordable + quality takeout around the corner at the Portugese grocery / deli Chaves.

Two very unimaginatively named Mexican places worth a try in New Rochelle: Little Mexican Cafe and Corner Mexican Restaurant. Favorites at LMC: the mole, the chips and salsa, pozole on weekends, the tacos pastor when the spit is out. CMR has delicious sopes and a good variety of deals. Also a nicer ambiance (sunlight!) ... But if salsa fresca and guac are important to you go with LMC.

Coromandel and Red Lotus in NR are pretty good for Indian and Thai.

lower westchester - nice but not too nice - for party of 14

We're planning a family get together for a couple of weeks from now on a Thursday night. It'll be in Westchester with some people coming up from Brooklyn and Manhattan. We'll have four kids ranging in age from 3 to 8 and two couples in their 60s and 70s.

So obviously looking for a comfortable family restaurant for a large group with good food... But nothing too fancy or outrageously priced.

I was thinking about suggesting the Cookery in Dobbs Ferry because I've been wanting to try it after seeing all the recent buzz here but I don't know how it might be for a big party with kids. Those of us in Westchester are in Larchmont, Rye and Eastchester so Dobbs Ferry isn't super convenient but not too bad either.

What places do you recommend for a table for 14?

Piri-Q in Mamaroneck

Turkish Meze is pretty good stuff and not fusion.

Very true about finding the right dishes - and the right day sometimes too.

I had good paella there a few months back and a very good "cuban" sandwich this week. They make good tamales too. The proprietor told me today that she works the whole time they're open from 7 am to 10pm there. Mind boggling.

Have you tried Chaves - the Portuguese deli diagonally across from Turkish Meze? I've had some good sandwiches and shrimp cake from there. And that's another very friendly proprietor.

I've yet to try the Guatemalan place - not even sure which you're talking about. Is it a bakery?

And I haven't been to the gelato place much at all so no comment there.

I did have a very tasty red clam sauce as takeout from Piccolo Mulino recently. I walked down Mamaroneck Ave while I waited for my order and saw I could have got the same dish (and probably more of it) from Sal's for $10 instead of $16. But when I got home the flavor of the sauce shut my miserly inner self up. Pleasantly surprised as Piccolo Mulino doesn't always do it for me. We're taking this thread all up and down the avenue now.

yes to the little grill in the back of that country store! i've been hitting it up on occasion for months for pupusas, tacos, and some of the daily specials. friendly service and good food.

btw jim i'm a huge fan of your blog.

Pepe's in Yonkers -- Great Pizza

from what i've seen, almost every time a new restaurant is heralded as being good on chowhound there is a big backlash a'coming. it's a pretty lame dynamic.

Samosa Cabana Indian Grill - New Rochelle

maybe dingy was a badly chosen word. i enjoyed having the option too and agree that the people were nice and the food usually good. i'm just saying the atmosphere inside was nil, it could have been thought out better, and street-view outside is bleak. that said, i was a supporter of the place.

Samosa Cabana Indian Grill - New Rochelle

Seems they've closed shop.

I can't cosign that blog's appraisal of it being awesome (driving in from manhattan.. what?) but I had some good things from there considering the low price point. Kind of a dingy place though and some of the items were suspect.

Had lunch at the El Charrito Taco Truck for 1st time today...

it must be something in the air because I made my first trip to El Charrito this week as well. It was on Tuesday - I had a carnitas taco and two of the day's specials: a cow feet tostada and a pig belly taco.

Really loved the food overall, though I wasn't too into the pig belly meat. The other two items were delicious.

Friday I went back for a torta and I'll probably try the Huarache next week. This place is going to be dangerous for me!

Pick the date night spot...

We haven't been out since forever. Our anniversary was a few days ago and in-laws are watching the kids tonight.

I figure we'll catch Slumdog Millionaire in Port Chester.

Places I'm considering for dinner, lack of reservation permitting...

Le Provencal
Nessa
Tarry Lodge
F.I.S.H.

I've had takeout from F.I.S.H. once... haven't eaten at any of the others.

I think Tarry Lodge is probably coming off the list right away because of what I'm imagining will be a large crowd.. Probably a more low-key, smaller place is better. And I'll try Tarry Lodge sometime in the middle of a week.

Thoughts comparing the other three? Other suggestions?

Comments on AJ's Burgers, North Ave, New Rochelle

My impression from two times getting takeout....Definitely good burgers and fries but they fall short of great. The quality of the meat is apparent and they know how to cook a medium rare burger but the overall experience to me is not special. I don't think the Potato roll hamburger buns is helping their cause. Doesn't contend with BSF for deliciousness but it is 15 minutes closer to my home and has room for families to sit which counts for something.

Best Mexican in Lower Westchester?

The Smokehouse's house chili is good, tasty, perhaps a bit too salty due to heavy use of bacon. I urge you to avoid their philly cheesesteak chili though. It's a mess. I don't really know of an amazing chili in the area. Would love to learn of some.

Best delivery at the College of New Rochelle area?

whoops, i was thinking iona. cnr might be out of their reach plus you're right by other places.

ok, so some actually helpful suggestions: red lotus for thai, little mexican cafe, golden rod (i think you'd be in their range) for chinese, japanese and some south asian.

Best delivery at the College of New Rochelle area?

I'm out of Modern Pizza's delivery range but Leonardo's Pizza on Palmer Ave has become our go-to for pizza takeout and delivery. Best in Larchmont and I'd bet they deliver to CNR area since they're very close to NR border.

Go with the foods in the title. It's what they do best. The dogs are fine but the burgers are awesome.

Italian Combo on Chicago Deep Dish Bread - From Leonardo's in Larchmont

Prepare for the equivalent of junk food porn.

We were having a bunch of people over Monday evening but hadn't really figured on food aside from snacks and birthday cake. So I called Leonardo's Pizza in Larchmont and asked if they could make us a 3 foot sub on short notice. Sal said he needed more time for that but he could send over a few heroes... Then he had a better idea. "How about I take the Chicago Deep Dish dough and make you an Italian combo on that?" "Sounds incredible" I said.

And incredible it was.. It was a big hit at the party and I had to take a photo while it was being cut. Hell, my wife is having some friends over tonight and I may see about ordering another one.

Sunday NY Times rates Sonora "Excellent"

my first time there was 2 weeks ago.. we had an early saturday dinner there for my father's birthday. nice decor, mostly pretty good food but didn't feel special by any means. i did enjoy the ceviche a great deal but definitely left underwhelmed and feeling i wouldnt go out of my way to go back.

i think the whole latin fusion concept didn't work for me... why not get better, cheaper latin food elsewhere?
