Hostess tried to return my cake?

In your posting, it doesn't sound like you really know this person that well so asking her is probably not an option. If I were in your shoes I think I'd be hurt just not knowing why she is returning it. But really - who knows what her intentions were so don't over think it. If you like this person, let it go. I think a standard of etiquette is something you're better off holding yourself to, not necessarily others. Otherwise you'll just wind up chronically offended.

Server Pet Peeves?

I've been on both sides of the coin so little quirks don't bug me - 'you guys' is fine, grab my plate before I'm done, I may slap your hand to get it back - but I don't really get mad. Also, I for the most part, love talking with the wait staff. They often give you more insight into the menu or will offer you a good by the glass wine selection that isn't on the menu.
BUT
#1 peeve - bring me something I didn't order and then argue with me about it - irritating! I know what I ordered and even if I am in the wrong - why argue with me - will it kill you to fix it?
#2 peeve - snobbiness - I don't care if you were on last night's episode of Law and Order, tonight you're serving me, so be nice.
#3 peeve - don't make me ask 3 times for something - when I want to get it myself or do it myself, I cook at home.
#4 peeve - a dirty bathroom - that says alot

Overall though, I like the folks who work in restaurants and usually have good experiences, so I don't have a long list of pet peeves.

While I'm at it... some earlier posts mentioned communal seating -- I can understand why you would want your own table... personally, I enjoy having the option. I like talking to other people at restaurants. Food's a great bonder, even if it's temporary, and you can meet really interesting people. I remember when my dad and I were travelling together - we were in a tiny little local taverna in Athens at a communal table. Nex to us was a young couple from Bavaria. He spoke 3 words of English (Cheeeecago and Al Caponaaay), she spoke a little English and a little French, I spoke a little French and my dad was just good at communicating with and understanding people. We had the best time sitting with them that night, laughing, drinking wine, listening to music - and we all learned a suprising amount about each other. That was more than 20 years ago and the memory is still vivid. When I'm alone especially, I will opt for the communal seating, bar, chef's counter - whatever - I like the potential for conversation. And even when you're with someone else, it can really add to the evening.

Peanut butter that has no carbs, is sugar free, calorie free, gluten free and fat free!??!!

'The website says that this "peanut spread" has no carbs, is sugar free, calorie free, gluten free and, of course, fat free.'
Haven't tried it - but from the sound of it their description left out out 'flavor free'.

Does anyone else hate Hot Dogs? I think I'm the only one.

I love roasted beets (esp w/goat cheese in a salad) -- I guess they do taste like dirt - I just prefer to think of them as EARTHY.

'Cauliflower is vile, and people who feel that it can substitute for mashed potatoes are surely smoking crack.' That is funny and true.

Blood sausage is revolting. My dad had me try some when I was in HS and I couldn't get the taste out of my mouth for 3 days - completely nauseating. And I'll eat almost anything else - except Miracle Whip, Hot Dogs, and Bologna.

Sauce for Fish Sandwiches - Not Tartar

How about a salsa verde?
It works on fish tacos so it should work on fish sandwiches.
Poach 4 tomatillos (husked), 1/2 jalepeno (seeded and stemmed), 1 quarter of a yellow onion in water and a spalsh of white wine vinegar until soft
Place in a blender with ground cumin, salt and pepper to taste
Add a couple of good handfulls of cilantro (stemmed) and the juice of 1/2 lime and pulse
Adjust seasoning to your taste

Or maybe an olive relish of some kind.

What goes with Chicken with Mango Chutney?

Mmm sounds yummy! The asparagus idea sounds good too. You might make a salad with mixed spring greens, goat cheese, toasted (shelled) pumpkin seeds/pepitas, some sliced red peppers. For the dressing you could make a white wine vinegar and EVOO dressing seasoned with some cumin, sea salt, ground black pepper, and since you'll have some mango, slice off some around the seed and throw it in the cuisinart with your dressing - it will sweeten it up a bit and make it a thicker consistency. It's good with the goat cheese!

Have fun at your party!

Can anyone recommend an incredible restaurant for a Birthday dinner?

I used to live in NY and if I were visiting and wanted a spectacular meal, I'd be heading for Babbo. You cannot go wrong regardless of what you order - it is ALL amazing. The service in the formal part of the restaurant when I've eaten there has been a little uptight, but for a birthday dinner - that may be ok -- the cafe up front is where I really think it's at! Great food, fun, a little more laid back. Reservations for restaurant a must. Get in line for the cafe early. Well worth the wait! Or reserve WELL in advance. If you've never tried grappa allow the waiter to select one and go for it.
