Tripas Taco at Gloria's: So Good!

My friend called it "tripitas." I went back and got one yesterday. So good, but it did feel like a lot of calories, especially since it was fried. Thank you!

Best pho in Los Angeles proper

There's a place near downtown and in Chinatown that has pho. I think it's called Pho Broadway. It hits the spot, if you have a craving and are in the area, but I wouldn't say it's the best. There are better places in Alhambra and San Gabriel off Valley Blvd. Honestly, I have had a lot of pho, and it's very hard to say which is best. The broth is key, and it depends how you like it.

How Are These Mexican Restaurants in Santa Monica?

Gilbert's and Don Antonio's. I prefer Don Antonio's because the restaurant is larger and nicer. Don Antonio's has a great shrimp ceviche that comes in a goblet with fresh avocado pieces inside. Gilbert's has delicious chips and salsa, but the food is a bit greasy. I don't mind grease, but it just seems even greasier and heavier that most places. Tasty, though.

There is a hole in the wall ceviche stand somewhere near Santa Monica. It's literally just a stand on the side of a major street. I forget the name, but they have really good shrimp ceviche. It might be called La Playita.

Tripas Taco at Gloria's: So Good!

Thanks for clarifying. I asked my friend what it was, and she said tripe. She's a regular at Gloria's, so I took her word for it. If I ever want to order it again, what should I ask for? Thanks for the tip! I will look for the stand in Rosemead. :)

Tripas Taco at Gloria's: So Good!

I am not a big fan of tripe in anything; however, I had a taste of the most delicious little fried tripe rounds in a taco at Gloria's in Huntington Park yesterday. The little tripas were like mini fried chicharron, so delicious that I'm still thinking about it today. Also, so cheap! The fresh shrimp ceviche tostada and the micheladas (made with Clamato and your choice of Mexican beer) aren't bad either. This is an authentic Mexican bar/restaurant, with low prices and good food and drink.

Any recs for other places in Pasadena or nearby that sell fried tripas in a taco with good salsa and good micheladas for these hot summer days? I may need another one soon.

Looking for a Big, Delicious Taco in Pasadena

This is a pic of one taco at Peppers. It's the size of three tacos. It was definitely filling. Now that's stuffed!

Where is a good place to watch the NBA Playoffs in Pasadena besides the Yardhouse

I've had the food at the Old Pas branch, but it has been a while since I've eaten there. The have British style pub food. I've had the shepherd's pie and the fish and chips. Fish and chips seem to be the right thing to get there, or just the chips. They served them with HP sauce (very British, right?).

At the new location, I had the cherry lambik beer (think Jolly Rancher/cough syrup), and a latte a couple of hours later. The latte was excellent. They brew Pete's coffee in house, which is very nice. My friend had a very strong beer, forgot the name, triple something. Anyway, I'd definitely go back.

Comparing it to T. Boyle's, I think both the food and the ambiance at Lucky Baldwin's (the new one), is much nicer, however, T. Boyle's had some really interesting local and IPA beer choices that I haven't found anywhere else. Again the food at T. Boyle's reminded me of high school snack stand food (nachos with yellow cheese from a can, etc.).

Another place we're looking to try is called 72 North in the old Molly Malone's space on Fair Oaks just north of Colorado Blvd.

Pepe's is so good! I like the one on Rosemead. Their tostadas are piles high, like a small hill or mountain. :-)

We went at night. It was busy without being too crowded. Plenty of open tables, good service, great selection of beer and lots of TVs. I think this will be my go to spot for beer and televised sports. Again, loved it! :)

We made a late night stop at Rick's after the NBA Playoffs. It stays open until midnight, apparently. Although the food hit the spot at the time, I feel like the hard shell taco I had at Burrito Express was tastier. The Burrito Express taco has shredded beef, while the Rick's taco had ground beef. Also, I liked the salsa and the cheese at Burrito Express better.

Thanks, reality check. LO's has a vast menu with some tantalizing options, and we might hit it up next time. :) I have watched a game there before. Not sure how I feel about the booths. They have a small space, in my opinion, for someone who wants to linger for a while.

I love the new Lucky Baldwin's! Dare I say, I like it better than the original one in Old Town? It is so nice. New furniture and fixtures. Excellent beer selection, as always. Plenty of flat screen TVs all around. Love this spot and will definitely go back!

We checked it out. Nice beer selection. I wasn't big on the decor or set up of the place, but the beer was very good. They have a nice selection of Belgians and IPAs, including Eagle Rock IPA, which I imagine is made a few miles away at Eagle Rock brewery. Another beer I enjoyed was an amazing blueberry beer. It was a yellow beer with a taste of blueberry at the end. So good. I would like to go back and try another four beer sampler.

The food was nothing to write home about. We got nachos, which reminded me of nachos you could get at a high school football game. Just the orange-yellow cheese sauce, tortilla chips and jalapenos.

Hi, I'm looking for a good place to watch the NBA Playoffs in Pasadena. Looking for cheap but good eats and a good beer/wine selection. The only places I can think of are the Yardhouse, Lucky Baldwin's, Barney's Beanery and the 35er. Any other ideas?

reality check, that's exactly what I meant. I meant a taco that has more than meat, onions and cilantro, and that is packed with a lot of ingredients, including meat, lettuce, cheese and possibly sour cream and salsa. :)

Heaven is Northgate Market

Hi, DiveFan. How'd you know? Yes, I do tend to shop at Ralphs, Pavillions, Vons and Trader Joes, however my preference is for smaller ethnic markets, particularly Persian, Armenian or Mexican markets. I just discovered one in Pasadena called Baja King today!

Another place that's worth checking out is Galleria Market, which is a Korean supermarket chain.

Thanks so much for posting! I'm so glad to see that I'm not alone in my love for Northgate! Can't wait to go back! :)

Burrito Express is where I went. Thank you Jack Flash and happybaker. I got two tacos for about $3.25. The hard shell one with beef was better than the carne asada soft taco. Hit the spot. I will continue my search, so I appreciate any and all suggestions. :)

Lol. Maybe, I do mean a burrito. There's a place in Boyle Heights that makes tacos this way. Yes, they are hard shelled. Tops also does it, but I'm craving something other than Tops.

Looking for a Big, Delicious Taco in Pasadena

Hi, I'm on a taco hunt again. I'm looking for a big taco stuffed with meat, lettuce, sour cream, cheese, the works. Not looking for a small carne asada taco, but looking for more of a super taco that is not from a fast food chain (e.g., not Del Taco or Taco Bell). Any taco trucks or dives in Pasadena where I can get one? Fresh salsa? Maybe I should hit Rosarito. Thanks in advance for your help.

Less expensive high-quality produce?

I don't know about the quality, but generally markets catering to ethnic groups (e.g., Chinese, Persian, Armenian, Mexican) have better prices than chains such as Whole Foods, Ralphs, Vons, etc. If you are on the westside, try some of the Persian markets on Westwood Blvd. between Santa Monica and Wilshire, or on Wilshire Blvd., west of the 405 freeway, such as Tehran Market, Rose Market, etc.

In addition, for larger supermarkets, I like Jons, Vallarta and Northgate. You'll be suprised by the variety and selection and the prices.

Regarding quality, judge by what you see. If it looks good, buy it.

There's a Middle Eastern market in the Valley called Valley Produce. It is always a super crowded, traffic jam of shopping carts because of the prices. Personally, I don't like the quality of the produce, but the prices are unbeatable, at about 1/5 of big grocery store prices.

Happy shopping! For the record, I have found the produce at Whole Foods overpriced and mediocre. Much better stuff at the smaller ethnic markets (better prices and quality and taste).

BTW, I recently discovered Northgate Market in El Monte. This is the kind of place you are looking for, but I don't think it's on the westside. Check for locations near you. I went there earlier this week and want to return soon. The closest ones to the westside seem to be the Hawthorne and LA locations: http://www.northgatemarkets.com/store...

Strawberry Pie??

Pie 'N' Burger has a good strawberry pie. I remember buying a slice a couple of times. The glaze is a bit too gelatenous for me. I would rec one of the chains, Marie Callender's or similar spot. Their fresh strawberry pies are usually good.

on't know if Jongewaard's Bake N Broil in Long Beach has fresh strawberry, but their lunch special with a burger, drink and slice of pie is really good. Some folks on this board rec'd it to me years ago, and I love it. I don't make it out there often, but it is yummy. Their pies and pastries seem to be made fresh, in house, and are delicious, especially the crust.

Need help in Northridge/Granada Hills

Pho-king Delicious in the old KMART parking lot on Corbin Avenue isn't bad for pho. It isn't crowded. If you want a more crowded spot for pho, try one of the pho places on Reseda Blvd. (near Sherman Way) in Reseda.

Pine Tree is my favorite Korean BBQ in the area. I've been going there for 20 years. It's moved from Northridge to Reseda.

Not sure what to recommed for Mexican. El Torito on Tampa Avenue is the old standby, but I know most Chowhounds wouldn't approve.

Pre Show Eats

A lot of people take their own food to the Bowl. Was outside food allowed at this show? You could get a to go plate from the Alcove or the Daily Grill. There seem to be a lot of chain restaurants on Sunset Blvd. and Hollywood Blvd. these days. Hope you found something good to eat before or during the show.
