What did you have for breakfast today?
Homemade sourdough whole wheat and fruit bread with a red Anjou pear and one slice of light Jarlsberg with tea.
Need an Easy Baked Pesach Chicken recipe
Chicken cutlets baked with matzoh crust is very good. I actually got the recipe from the Martha Stewart.com site.
After Party
What left-overs are you happy to have after you host a party? I am trying not to hear that bowl of potato calling my name.
Prophecy in White Plains, any info?
We did buy this Groupon and went to dinner this Wednesday night. I have to laugh when I think that we actually called and asked if we needed a reservation. We were totally the only patrons there for the first hour. We left at around 8 and there was only one other couple. If I had been wowed by the experience I'd call it an off night but I can't see this place lasting too much longer. If it does it might be only an event venue but not a dining place.
I asked about the soup of the day, "We don't have soup today". I ordered the mixed berry salad, it came with zero berries and some sliced almonds on top. I told the waiter and he said he'd check with the kitchen. He never told me what they said but I can guess. My husband ordered the lamb chops with chimichurri sauce. No sauce. The garlic mashed potatoes had no garlic.
The romantic feel that I read about probably translates to the dim lights and the faux Medieval decor. The lighting just barely erased the stains on the carpet near our table.
Sorry, but my prophecy is that there will be another restaurant casualty in White Plains.
Rosedale Deli Reopening
Hey White Plains, we passed the Rosedale Avenue and Mamaroneck Avenue intersection and saw a big Grand Opening sign on the old Rosedale deli.
Does anyone know why they closed in the first place? I hope it's the same reliable good food we knew before.
COCKTAILS from the 60's???
I was a teen in the late 60's and I remember the 7&7. I would not drink it now on a bet, but it was the go to drink for those of us who weren't really drinkers.
Flavored Tea
Thanks, chefj. Do you have any particular teas, ie; Assam, Darjeeling, etc, you like to use as your base?
Flavored Tea
Have any of you tried your hand at tea alchemy?
I like to drink flavored black tea. The varieties I like are; vanilla, almond, coconut. Here's my question..Is it possible to start with the black tea leaves and add flavor bits to them (ie dried coconut, vanilla bean bits) or must this be done when the tea leaves are dried?
Fiction books with recipes?
Here's another vote for the K. H. Page series. Faith is more sophisticated than Goldy and the mysteries actually will not be no-brainers like the more recent Davidson books. I also would urge all foodies to read the Bread Alone and its sequel. They were well written and full of yeast-related details.
Bayside restaurants?
I am not currently a local, but Dad still lives in Bayside. We recently went to the Terrace diner in Bay Terrace and liked the open airy feel of the room. We didn't ask much of the food on this occasion. We just wanted eggs and salad and they filled the bill satisfactorily. What I really liked was that my 94 year old Dad was not ignored and was treated as well as all the other customers. I also must say that home fries with my mushroom omelet were outstanding.
Serafina coming to White Plains
Are more chains coming in to White Plains because the real estate is getting too expensive for small owners? If so, I feel that is a sad consequence of our growth as a city.
Preparation for baby's arrival
You are so smart to do this for yourself ahead of time. Look at the Pregnancy Cookbook by Hope Ricciotti, MD and Vincent Connelly. they have excellent recipes for pre- and post partum moms.
Valentine's Day at home = better than eating out?
I agree with escondido that restaurants are too commercial on holidays, especially this one. Is it a date? A long-married couple? Are kids involved?
A theme in the table setting makes the mood festive. For example, old-fashioned paper doilies as placemats and flowers on the table and some background music shows effort. If romantic vibes are important I would make the food delicious but simple and on the light side. Nobody feels romantic if they have heartburn! Only you know what your significant other likes to eat and drink. Mine would like seafood. I would love a simple protein with a baked potato. I would def have some chocolate element in the dessert.
More Pizza Coming To White Plains
DH and I enjoyed our Martini and Meatball night at the bar. We walked over after an early movie in the City Center. The crowd is friendly and the drinks were poured by a generous hand. The bartender was fast and friendly. The meatballs were good and we even had complimentary cauliflower pizza. Is the pizza the greatest ever pizza? Probably not, but it is good and the value is excellent.
What's your favorite snowed-in comfort food?
I have been baking breads and cooking soups. Today, ice covering the county, I think it will be crunchy granola and a few more breads.
More Pizza Coming To White Plains
If the weather is in any way cooperative I fully intend to try it. Thanks, kaaaasss.
More Pizza Coming To White Plains
Has any one gone for the $5.00 martini and meatball special on Wednesday nights? That combo intrigues me.
loose teas
I love Almond Cookie. I'd like to know more about the Teavana line of products too. the prices online seemed higher than specialteas
What's your favorite snowed-in comfort food?
I bake bread. Today it is two loaves of cinnamon raisin whole wheat and a large loaf of a whole wheat/flax/oat bread.
loose teas
Thanks, liu and lixer. I believe that specialteas is related directly to teavana. I have a teavana shop in my town but the tea I sampled there turned me off. I checked out the teaviews site and bookmarked it for future reference. Next stop will be zhitea. that Ambrosia sounds like something I would like.
I am not a coffee lover and I rely on a good strong, and tasty, cup of tea in the morning.
loose teas
Specialteas, from whom Ive bought loose tea for years is closing. Which tea resources do you suggest? I like to drink flavored black teas such as; vanilla, coconut, etc.
Fig and Olive opening in Scarsdale!
We stayed close to an hour. We were not too full for dinner as the tastings while plentiful were tiny. We did not stay for dinner. I am wary of dining anywhere until they have been up and running for a few months. We actually went to the other extreme and drove to a diner for a salad afterwards.
Fig and Olive opening in Scarsdale!
We went to the invitation only party last night. I was surprised because I thought it was going to be a gourmet market with a restaurant. there is no market. The tastes we had last night speak well for a good place to sit and have a leisurely lunch. I loved the crostini and DH enjoyed the meats he tried. It is very minimalist in decor and just a little too consciously uptown for the area.
Shoprite in Scarsdale
It's interesting that the two new ShopRites, Scarsdale and White Plains have such distinct atmospheres. Scarsdale has more Asian produce and White Plains has more Latino items. I am just happy to finally have other choices of supermarkets after so many years of only Stop and Shop and Whole Foods (in White Plains) available to us.
Cooking with smoked paprika
It does a great job of livening up a pot of vegetarian split pea soup.
Help! Good place for a small group to meet/eat/drink/chat in Westchester?
Ruby's in Rye has a private room but I don't know if you want to rent a whole room. Sam's of Gedney Way in White Plains has catering rooms but they also have a bar area that may not always be busy. They, Sam's, also have an area that is a private-ish dining room off the lobby.

Solo Dining
When you are home alone where do you eat? Right now I'm eating my lunch at the computer and alternating checking sites (like now) and playing games. Where is your favorite place to eat alone?
Peanut butter taste tests; PB devotees: what's your favourite?
That's my choice too, susans. I have a little TJ's every day.
What should I do with my Kitchenaid mixer!
Which mixer did you get? KA makes many including a hand-mixer (which i also have). I have the Professional 600. As chefathome said, I adore this appliance and would hate to do without it. I use to mix; cake batter, cookie dough, bread dough. I use it for kneading bread dough. I use an attachment to grind fresh hamburger and turkey.
Try the torch for a simple and nutritious breakfast treat..oatmeal brulee. Your family will never turn their nose up at this bowl of breakfast cereal. make your oatmeal the usual way, portion it into oven proof bowls and apply sugar and the torch.
Happy cooking!
