Fun Greensboro dinner help

Thank you, so much, for your suggestions and I think we will be trying out the Tap Room tonight. Last night, we ended up at this great little place on Spring Garden called Bianca's Italian Eatery. It was a really neet dining experience and I enjoyed the food for the most part. I like the idea of ordering your entree and then getting the featured appetizer, salad bread and dessert included. You don't have any choices as to those dishes, so I could imagine it could be pretty hit or miss, but I was lucky in that I loved every dish. We ended up at Bianca's from a recommendation from a friend and I was glad we tried it out, because it seems to be one of those places I might not try out on my own or just by looking at it or driving by. Thanks again.

Fun Greensboro dinner help

I just recently moved to Greensboro myself and have been trying to make my way around to the countless worthshile restaurants around town, but this week I am having friends from Virginia visiting and am trying to give them a good dining experience in just a few short days. I want to bring them to someplace fun and laid back with good food and a good atmosphere. I have been to Print Works, Green Valley Grill and Lucky's and love them, but I think they are a little too much for my friends at this time. I brought them to Brixx last night for some pizza and beer and to Stameys today for lunch, but I have no idea where to bring them tonight. I am sure we will want to get a few drinks and have a decent meal without breaking the bank. I know this is on VERY short notice, but I am looking for any help or suggestions. Thank you SO MUCH!

Best Eats in Geneva, NY?

I went to William Smith and have found some pretty decent places to eat through the years I went to school there and visiting since graduation. There used to be this place called "Just Cookies and Pies" that I don't believe is there anymore. It had the best sandwiches in history though. I also like the Crow's Nest, just outside of town. I brushed through Geneva last weekend and actually ended up taking my husband to Parkers. We had some pretty good food and this is a great place to have a nice draft beer (they have tons) and some good pub grub. A must for any Geneva stop is Cams Pizza with their homemade Blue Cheese Dressing. Fabulous. Still my favorite pizza in the world and I mean that. Maybe it's just the combination of taste and smell that transports be back to first year and ordering pizza in the dorms. Cobblestone is pretty good and is where we would take the parents during parent's weekend. Believe it or not. Wegmans has some pretty good sushi too!

Maple Sugar Candy?

I know a local (upstate NY) maple producer who sells maple sugar (you can't call it candy because of tax reasons) at the Union Square Green Market. I believe the name of his business is Wood Family Homestead Maple. His name is Tony and he is a great guy. They also sell sweet sorghum, a favorite in the south, which is a nice and unique treat for NYers.

UWS advice...

See, now Saigon Grill is one of my mother's favorite UWS eating spots when she visits.....but I thought I had learned they closed down? Is that right? Or are they still kicking, because if they are I HAVE to try it, even if it's just for her.

UWS advice...

Thank you all so much for your wonderful advice. I will certainly be trying a few of these places. My husband was particularly excited about Rack and Roll, as he loves good soul food and I am pretty excited about trying the Haitian restaurant, though I still don't know if it's called Krik Krak or Trik Trak. I will let you know when we come back. I am starving and can not wait to get there and start eating!

UWS advice...

These sound like some great places. I have been to Dinosaur BBQ in Rochester and I wonder if the one in NY is much different....I have never tried Haitian food, I am sure I would like it though. Thank you for all the suggestions so far. I have been looking up menus all morning and am now more than ready for lunch I am so hungry!

UWS advice...

Thank you, that sounds great! Our friend, whose apartment at which we are staying, said there are a number of good Thai restaurants in the neighborhood. Though she failed to give us any names before she took off for Mexico. We also love good BBQ, Soul food and Greek and Mediterranean food.

UWS advice...

My husband and I will be making a trip down to NYC this weekend and need some advice on where to stick our forks. We will be staying in the area of 95th and Broadway, in an area of the city we are not familiar with at all. We are on a slight budget, but have room for a little splurge.

Good food near our cheesy resort?

Please someone answer my post. I really want to know which direction to head for some good chow. Please, please, please!

Good food near our cheesy resort?

Well, after months of hounding and talking about some sort of champagne tub, my husband has convinced me to go to some cheesy romantic resort in the Poconos.. I think one of my cousins did her honeymoon here and after looking it up, I am sure I will need to escape all the romance of it all (and the reported "family" style meals at the couples resort?) and eat some real food in an area I have never visited. I know the resort is in Marshall Creek (Caeser's Pocono Palace I think it's called) and I am hoping there are places in the general area worth checking out. We are not looking for five star dining, but more of the local favorites and regional specialties. Any help would be so greatly appreciated!

Eats in Oneonta?

From Cleveland, you would be coming across most of NY State on future 86 (I think it's still 17 now) in Binghamton you will get on 88 to Oneonta.

But in terms of food, there are some nice places besides Brook's. On Main Street you should try the Autumn Cafe. They have great food, good wine and frequently feature musical entertainment. They also have a nice deck out back for summer dining. Also on the Main drag but on the east end twords Brook's is the Phoenix Cafe. They have great fresh specials and I had the best Tandori Chicken of my life in the little, could miss it if your not looking converted ice cream shop. For lunch the Undercover Eggplant is a good place for specialty sandwiches and creative wraps. During the school year it's a favorite of college students, so you know it's affordable. The Eggplant is on Chestnut Street. Out twords the Soccer Hall of Fame, you will find Pie in Sky Ice Cream. This stuff is amazing and comes in an array of seasonal flavors. Last fall I had a pumpkin pie cone and I still remember that taste.

You can go to Christopher's for pretty good steaks and a large salad bar. I find it a little run of the mill but it is very popular.

The restaurants get better and better the closer you get to Cooperstown and you won't find a shortage of great places to eat around the BBHOF. The Pepper Mill is an old favorite out in that direction.

MDI/Bar Harbor 2003

Oh those cat paw muffins at 2-Cats. Oh how I miss that perfect blend of brown sugar and cinnamon.

Great Eats in Bar Harbor & MDI

I used to work at 2 Cats when I spent a summer working in Bar Harbor. I might have served you your breakfast! I loved wearing those great 2 Cats T-shirts and even though we had to get there early to set up, we could jam to good music. I started by squeezing their fresh orange and grapefruit juice until one day they threw me an apron and set me loose on the floor. I love working at places when you know the food is good. This was more than true for 2 Cats. The only problem was, the kitchen was so small, it couldn't get all the people fed fast enough. Most people knew it was worth the wait. Others, not so much. Hey, they can go to Jordan's

Maine coast

Stewman's Lobster Pound at the Bar Harbor Regency is actually pretty good. It's got a great view and I enjoyed the meal I got there. It might have been a bit pricey though.

lunch in Bar Harbor Maine?

Is Poor Boys still there? I loved this place. I had pretty good Italian food at Anthony's too.

maine - bar harbor eats

There are some incredible places to eat in Bar Harbor. There are all kinds of food to choose from too. I, like so many others, had the amazing opportunity to spend a summer working at a handful of the gobs of restaurants that are open, mostly, during the summer "season". I stayed for the full season and a little past into the winter months before retreating down to Portland. I made it my mission while I was there to eat my way around the island. For all my good intentions I could not hardly put a dent in all the restaurants and I ate out every day. There were just too many to choose from and I admitt I got stuck on a few favorites.
For those who said many of the restaurants and businesses close down for the winter(many to open their businesses in South Florida for their winter "season")are right. There are restaurants who stay open year round to cater to locals and those smart tourists who make the wise decision to see Acadia's unspoiled beauty during the off-season. When Bar Harbor is in full swing, it is in FULL SWING. For those few months in the middle of the summer, the small streets are filled, buses zoom and cruise ships dwarf the many small islands that surround the main one (MDI).
Restaurants, oh the restaurants. You can choose from the most elegant to the most "salty", right down town. There are restaurants that all serve similar menu's with slight variations on the staples of Lobster (standard 1 1/4 lb.), clam chowder and blueberry pie are usually right there in some form or another.
For those tourists booking a whale watch or stepping of a cruise ship tender there is the "Fish House Grill and Raw Bar". I loved the Fish House and ate their often. They have a great raw bar and a deck where you can eat with the water slapping the wharf under your feet. This was my favorite place to get clams and mussels. Good seafood newburg and BBQ ribs, believe it or not.
Geddy's, a short hike up the hill, is flashy, serves little lizzards in their drinks, is only accessible by those 21 and up and has a very loungy feel with marginal food. There is also a whacky gift shop down there.
After Geddy's in one of Bar Harbors oldest tourist restaurant, Testa's. Testa's has history. Here, you can get the Taste of Maine, a good, affordable way to get all those Maine must haves for those in hurry and coming back to visit an old family favorite. Strawberry pie has been a Testa's main stay for as long as most can remember and is still served warm with lots of whipped cream.
At Ben and Bills you can sample some Lobster Ice Cream. I kid you not. This is butter flavored ice cream with chunks of lobster mixed right in. For those not daring enough for that they have many other hand made concoctions and some pretty good fudge to choose from too.
I loved going to this cheep delhi right off Main Street on Cottage street. They serve the quintesential Maine Sandwich. No, not the Lobster Roll as many of you might think. This is called an Italian. And no, it's not salami, provalone and pepperoni. This is ham, cheese, green peppers, olives, pickles and oil, vinager, salt and pepper all served on a warm, grilled hot dog looking roll. It's really good.
Jordan's on Cottage Street in great for early morning Blueberry Pancakes after watching the sun rise on Cadallic Mountain. It's open real early for the lobstermen and puts out some awesome blueberry cakes, coffee and all the standard breakfast fare.
For a slightly more unique breakfast expereince, Bar Harbor has two awesome breakfast locations who battle for the town's "favorite" Cafe This Way and 2 Cats both have awesome food. 2 Cats won me over and I rarely got my morning fill anywhere else. They serve biscuits with strawberry butter, delicious organic coffee, and some omlettes to die for. My favorite you ask? The apple, walnut, cheddar omlette was pretty good...but so was the breakfast burrito. This place is cool, upbeat and fun. A great place to get your fill before a day on the trails.
I also loved going to this tapas bar, I can't remember the name, but they had bocce ball and really good food. So did the great burrito place and the hummas at Jack Russels was another favorite.
In case you were wondering, I could go on. But I think you get the point. I know you will love eating in Bar Harbor, but remember that the old saying does not always ring true in this tourist destination. Just because the line is long, does not mean the food is best there. If the line is long at one place go around the corner, off the beaten path and you are sure to find a gem.
