Go "local" in Turks and Caicos

Be wary of Anacaona restaurant at the Grace Bay Club. It is lovely but probably the most expensive restaurant on the island.

BOGO's -- how do they work where you are?

Won't shop at Stew Leonards? I know they are generally pricey, but sometimes they have some great sale items.
Their family quibbling and tax concerns are none of my business.

Middletown CT comings & goings

I don't think so. Closed at 8, closed Sunday, no sales on credit.

Middletown CT comings & goings

The Sleigh House in Hamden didn't allow women at the bar then, also, probably to my father's disappointment. Bagelman1 has an astounding recollection of every establishment in several CT counties during that time.

Fat guy with ans expense account that is sometimes on TV

I am certain JB does this for love and not money. There really is no equivalent experience. I applaud him. I hope someday to meet him.

I especially enjoy Jewish delis that offer a bowl of both, as I patiently await my order.

mcdonald's raised price of large coffee by 25+% -- no longer $1

I don't frequent McD's often, but I do ask for the senior coffee when I'm out early and craving a sausage biscuit.
I'm also one of few movie theater patrons who ask for a senior discount for the Jackass movies - they make me howl with laughter.

I concur. A well known restauranteur in Boston and elsewhere has been my golf partner for 30 years, and I have been careful to avoid flattering chatter about his restaurants. He has since sold and is retired.

LAMB - Domestic vs imported

I lived 8 years in Colorado and was spoiled by delicious Colorado spring lamb. I lived 9 years in Texas, where sheepeaters are disparaged, and lamb is rarely featured in the prime meat case. Go figure. I was told it has something to do with sheep overgrazing beef pasture land in Texas. I was amused in Australia where lamb is half the price of beef.

Favourite fruit and cheese pairing.

At a wine pairing dinner in Taos, dessert was roasted figs with blue cheese and Questa honey. Delicious, especially with the sauterne.

BOGO's -- how do they work where you are?

Same with my Publix. I wouldn't attempt to buy only one for half price. I'm sure they get enough customer whining without me piling on.

I likewise tend to befriend restaurant owners, and it presents a real conflict because I then cannot toot their horn here. It's a grey area where I am not a shill, but would like to spread the word about good chow. I had a similar woodshed talk from the mods and a post removed about a fine restaurant in the Poconos.

How to spot bad BBQ

I distinguish between strip centers and malls. BBQ is possible in a strip center, probably to the dismay of neighboring tenants, but usually outdoor space beyond the demised premises is considered to be a common area which a tenant could not permanently occupy with a smoker and woodpile. In a mall, not possible.

One doesn't get real BBQ in a mall, period. Fun article.

Fruit Imported From Mexico

I retract any negative inference toward Mexico. The melon problem I was thinking of apparently originated in Colorado.

How has high altitude affected your cooking/baking and what was your remedy?

When I was at my primary home in Denver @ 5200 ft, no big deal, except bread gets stale quickly. At my mountain house in Cuchara, 9000 ft, cornbread took an extra 5 minutes, the charcoal grill took forever.

Fruit Imported From Mexico

In the old days, nearly all fruit was local and seasonal. For the luxury of year- around fruit, to which we have become spoiled and accustomed, there may be slight but acceptable risks.

Good information. I'm sure ceramic knives are expensive, what are considered to be the advantages that justify their cost? Thanks.

Caribbean babymoon - hotel/resort recommendations? Need great food!

Bermuda is likely to be more comfortable in June/July. Most of the Caribbean is scorching in the summer, although I love it year around.

Cheese for a Flight

Blues, goudas and cheddars will be fine and they travel well at room temp. A ripe taleggio can be aromatic. No epoisses or limburger! I enjoy the stinky cheeses only in the privacy of my home.
