Shrimp chips
Hello fellow hounders,
Would anyone know whether you can buy freshly cooked shrimp chips from a downtown T.O store?
The pre-packed chips are fine but was wondering if there is such a thing as buying them fresh out of the fryer! (other than ordering them in a restuarant)
Cheers!
The return of Kenzo Ramen
I too was excited to hear about this place and after the review in now magazine was eager to try the ramen. However, upon my first visit there, I was not impressed. Really friendly but badly organized service, many of the items are not on the menu and whilst the soup broth tasted good (though a bit salty), the noodles (like mentioned above) tasted like they came out of packet! Will give them another go once they find their feet firmly on the ground!!
Restaurant recommendations near Yonge & Gerrard
I recommend a persian restaurant N of Carlton on Yonge called Tempus 508 Yonge. They have a good selection of kebabs and some nice persian dishes at decent prices. Mains approx $10-15.
Other places close by are Korean Grill House (just south of Gerrard on Yonge), Senators (on victoria+dundas serving diner style food).
Kohlrabi
Hey Chowhounders,
Does anyone have any good recipe using Kohlrabi. I picked up this unusual vegetable yesterday and would like to make a main dish with it ( I have never used or tried it!)
Any suggestions and does anyone know how I go about dissecting the beast?
thanks!
Frank at AGO Mini Review
I went to Frank last friday night for dinner. Overall, I would say that my dining experience was very pleasant. It was good but not great (comparing it to the likes of N44, Canoe, Splendido and the sort).
For a Friday night (8pm), I have to say that the joint was very quiet. I counted 8 tables. Hence the service we obtained was very friendly and our server was very knowledgeable regarding the food and wine choices. I started with a foie gras starter whilst my significant other had a salmon tartare. Both appetizer dishes had complex rich flavors and were justifiably small in portion, however the prices were too high for my liking. Paying $15 for app is a bit too steep, even for the high-end places. The mains were more in the right ballpark, with the Cumbraes Rib eye steak for $30 and the duck at $28. Both dishes were well executed, however, whilst the steak had a great flavor, the medium-rare order was dry in taste i.e lacked juiciness and may be a result of not being well marbled or just the fact it was a rib eye. It needed a sauce of some nature and not the overly-pungent blue cheese that accompanied it, that destroyed the flavor of the meat if sampled together. Nonetheless, I did like the concept of grilled romaine that also came with the dish. The Duck dish that my missus had was exceptional. Well cooked, perfect pink and accompanied by semi sweet sauce dotted with sour cherries. The grilled Polenta that came along for the ride needed a little more flavor (perhaps hint of garlic) to stand up to the rich duck flavor.
The desserts were good. I had the baked lemon pudding which had a rich intense lemon flavor and lemon curd at the bottom. Close to the end, I found it a struggle to finish as the lemon curd was becoming a too intense flavor. The missus had an apricot tarte tartine that was also good. Their wine selection was commendably canadian with a good number of wines priced at the $30 mark and their tea selection to promote digest post meal was excellent also. Overall, a good dining experience (though for this price there are restaurants that are better).
The Stockyards Smokehouse & Larder
Went to Stockyards for the 1st time a week ago for lunch and I have to say that I was a little disappointed. The service and staff are great and informative but both the pulled pork and chicken sandwiches that a friend and I had were disappointing. Firstly, for 9 bucks, the sandwich though filled with moist meat is rather small and overpriced. Secondly, the small roll used to hold the meat is so soft that the sandwich breaks apart in your hands and you end up eating the meat that drops onto their fancy cast iron service pans!! Finally, the flavor of the BBQ meat in the sandwich was as not as flavorsome as I would have expected. The sauce that the meat was marinated/tossed in tasted tart, almost vinegary. So, along with the coleslaw within the sandwich and their recommended lime&mint homemade drink, the sandwich eating experience was too tangy and tart for my liking. I have yet to try the ribs for which they are known for and I will venture there one evening for them, but my vote for the best BBQ pork sandwich at the moment goes to the Black Camel @ Rosedale.
Foxleys Rib sauce recipe? (moved from Ontario board)
Chowhounders!
It's time to test your tastebuds!
If any of you have been to Foxleys, then I am sure that you would have fallen in love like I (and others) for the Ribs with the amazing sauce that accompanies it! The sauce is intoxicating, with layers of flavors that are so complex but come together to make this dish unforgettable.
I think this sauce contains at least Shallots, lemongrass, ginger, soy sauce, fish sauce and perhaps molasses and hoisin, but I would like to get your help on determining what this sauce consists of so that I can try to emulate this at home!
Thanks for your help!!

Recommendations for Little India
I highly recommend a visit to Udipi palace. Its a vegetarian place that specializes in south indian cuisine, such as dosas, Uttapams etc. The joint is nice and clean, service friendly and the dishes are exceptionally good value.
I have also heard the Moti Mahal is good too, but yet to have venture there.
Help - forced to eat at Spring Rolls! Is there ANYTHING decent there?
If my is arm is completely twisted to go there, then I am partial to the Vietnamese bbq chicken and pork.
looking for restaurant serving good vegetarian AND meat dishes
Hi all,
I have friends coming from out of town and am taking them out for dinner. One of them is a vegetarian and so I am looking for a restaurant that serves good selection of vegetarian and meat dishes (and not just the one customary veg option that is usually on most menus!!).
I am looking for a mid-range place located downtown T.O. Any suggestions?
Thanks
Korean on Yonge between Sheppard and Finch...
On a recent trip to Ikea (N York Branch), we ventured to the originally named 'Korean Traditional Restaurant' based on recommendations from fellow Chowhounders. It is at 6016 Yonge. It is a small family run place with pictures of the dishes stuck to the sides of the wall. But don't let that put you off because the food was excellent. They are renowned for their bibimbap dishes. They only have the one selection on their menu, but you need to speak to the owners in person for their full selections of bibimbaps (which I guess is what is written in Korean within the last page of their menu).
Their sides selection is very different from the conventional items that you get downtown. Pickled dandelion and fern leaves/stems are unusual but delightful, along with the sea cucumber (I think!). Prices are reasonable ($6-10/dish) and the service is attentive and friendly.
Tilda basmati rice toronto
You can also purchase Tilda from BJ Supermarket @ Gerrard and Coxwell. I noticed that the price of the Tilda brand is slowly increasing: 10lbs for $15.99
