Best Cherry Pie?
My sweetheart left a restaurant utterly dejected recently because they were out of his favorite: cherry pie.
So I'm wondering: what's your favorite cherry pie in the area?
Mulan in Waltham, replacing Beijing Star
Crazy Egg, I wonder if we overlapped- we had 2 screaming young things (until they were fed-- we didn't go early enough, got there closer to 6 and had to wait on a table) and were uh, one of the whitest tables in the place. Thanks for the menu list- we were ordering quickly to get food and we will want more things to try! Better I think w/ more adults as well those pups to try more dishes!
Mulan in Waltham Update
They are open. oops I posted about it here : http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/742683#6434593
We went last night. It was MOBBED.
Mulan in Waltham, replacing Beijing Star
I was about to do the same. However, we actually ate at Mulan Waltham this evening and it was terrific-- BUT they were too mobbed to be able to handle us normally. People were waiting for takeout for ages and we were there for over 1.5 hours for a very simple meal. We will be back but will avoid rush times and hope it settles down- we got things out of order, etc, but I expect it will be fine soon (and hope so!)
We had: smoked pork w/ leek- great; pancake w/ beef appetizer- great, and the pancakes were excellent; pan fried noodles were good, mostly got them for the kids, not exactly complex. Hot and sour soup: way too five-spicey for my taste.
I'd just suggest for the time being if you're doing take out, call ahead lest you end up waiting for ages.
ISO Hanukkah dinner out w/ young children
We ended up @ Johnny's in Newton Center- just due to convenience based on today's schedule.
My side of latkes was good, my husband's special hanukkah giant latke was nothing to write home about.
Cheeseburger was tasty but kid's burger was overcooked.
Matzoh ball soup for my son, it's something he loves, and still does. Again, decent, not Earth-shattering.
It was nice & quiet and totally accommodating for our 2 small children, but keeping in mind it was 5pm.

ISO Hanukkah dinner out w/ young children
I can't think of where to take my kids for latkes + something yummy and preferably vaguely traditional so I can have another glorious night of fried food and something like tradition without the mess. Suggestions? We're in Waltham, closer is better but not the only factor!
How does Johnny D's make oatmeal so yummy?
Any more thoughts on whether is might be brand-related? Good to know they don't add any dairy (for clues) and also to talk about the non-steel-cut technique since they don't use steel cut. (I like steel cut sometimes but that's definitely not what makes theirs yummy!)
How does Johnny D's make oatmeal so yummy?
I wondered about the hidden fat possibilities (mmm oatmeal, now with bacon grease!) I often make oatmeal with some milk instead of water, but I am guessing they cook it far longer... though it is not steel cut (I use old fashioned rolled oats as do they, I think). Do I really need a crock pot, sigh. I also wondered if they added eggs.
How does Johnny D's make oatmeal so yummy?
Certain members of my household will eat up a cup of Johnny D's oatmeal in a snap but not eat what I make at home. How do they make it so yummy? (I love it too. AND I'd love to get some more oatmeal into my people for their own good!)
Denian's -- Chinese Bao.zi and Bubble Tea Shop in Lexington
Update: I tried it out yesterday. Very simple menu, pick how many steamed dumplings and what filling. There are a few other dishes (salady things). We tried chicken, pork, beef, sweet bean. They were good, clearly homemade, perhaps nothing to travel across the state for, but a nice stop if you're close by. Also had dinner combos on the menu-- I think aimed at takeout. Would love to hear other opinions! I had a black tea bubble tea, which was good. They gave me a free lemon iced tea because they were experimenting with the recipe, also quite tasty. Prices were reasonable. They have a simple set-up with a bar height table with stools, and two comfy benches; the benches look like they're for waiting, but I sat there because I had my toddler in tow, and we shared dumplings while he sat in his stroller.
I have to say the dumplings were not hot enough, but I didn't say anything because my son was eating them too, and I didn't want them too hot either.
So all in all, I'll go again, might get attached, might not. A pleasant place.
Staffperson and owner were very friendly, place was clean (and stylish). No regular tables or anything like that.
There's a pastry shop next door- royal pastry. Kind of curious if they're any good, could make a fun lunch combo!

Not yet but I drove by last week and it looked busy! The website is a bit buggy right now.
Best outdoor seating outside of Boston (Cambridge, Newton, etc, anywhere that you can park)
Also, Stellina in Watertown Sq has a nice patio in back with a fountain and whatnot (no view or anything but nice) if it's a nice summer evening.

The Neighborhood in Union Square Somerville. Not the classiest food on the planet, but it's so cozy, friendly, nice shaded patio.
Tango Mango Waltham
We went once, and were disappointed. We like Anna's- and this seemed like less food for more money, and not as flavorful. Plus, too much rice, not enough other stuff, particularly where we paid extra for guac and sour cream and it was hardly present. This was right after they opened, so if anyone can convince me to try again, I'd be pleased. We were looking forward to them opening.
Our disappointment did get us to go try out El Amigo on Willow off River St-- and we liked that a lot. A plenty-filling burrito for under $5, for example, and mighty tasty. I liked the chicken burrito best. They have a lot of other things to try when I'm not craving burritos!
Restaurants everyone seems to love but you don't
There's another sabatino's (same people) on Rt 20 Main St in Waltham.
the friendly toast opening in cambridge!
We drove to Portsmout last weekend from Boston just for Breakfast at the Friendly Toast. While Portsmouth offers much more after Breakfast than Kendall Square, we sure would love to have them here, especially if they can re-create the look of the place and the tattoos on the waitstaff. I only would wish for better coffee. It's definitely on the diner side of the coffee spectrum.
Tara Pizza in Waltham - empanadas?
So I've had a couple of reheated empanadas from this place called Tara Restaurant Pizza & More on Moody St in Waltham. I hear they have good burritos, too. I didn't know what place was being talked about at first because I was looking for Mexican restaurants or some such. I love Mexican, but some in the family are prone to post-mexican gut-ache... so...
Any experiences there? I can't find it on the board.
Where to buy organic apples, pears, peaches
Thanks for the replies so far. I like poptart's point as well-- and to that end, recommendations on farms/orchards using little or no spraying/pesticides would also be great! And favorite pear orchards, so I can ask about their particulars...
Any specific farmer's markets you've had good luck with, poptart?
Where to buy organic apples, pears, peaches
I've got a baby who loves fruit, so I'm looking for where to buy my late summer and fall fruits, near Waltham. I'm thinking local when possible and definitely organic for these fruits-- and I know some orchards for apples and pears but not who is growing organic. I get a lot of fruit for him at TJ's but I'd rather a local option for the coming period. I used to buy fruit at Russo's but they don't seem to carry organics (nor give signage telling me where it was grown)....
Suggestions for farmer's markets/orchards/farm stands/stores where I can get my hopefully fairly-priced yummy organic local fruit?
Sorry if it's a repeat, I did a search but some days my personal search function feels, well, not so productive.
Where to find a CT Style lobster roll (no mayo) around boston?
Belle Isle Seafood in East Boston (right at border w/ Winthrop) is an order to go or sit on a stool kinda place that made me a lovely lobster roll w/ no mayo (w/ butter) on my request, while my husband enjoyed the standard w/ mayo roll. Found Bell Isle thanks to another thread here...
Recos Fancy coffee/sandwich near Waltham Saturday?
My sister is coming to town all too briefly for a visit- and wants to squeeze in a business-related coffee with possible food on Saturday (tomorrow!)- her host wanted to go to Brasserie Joe downtown- but that's too far/too much of a hassle on this schedule. Plus I live in Waltham, which is so much more convenient! Who can recommend somewhere that will feel like it's similarly upscale (never been to Brasserie Joe but I'm guessing it's a little fancier than our favorite diners)-- for a coffee and possible lunch? I only know the dinner places around here that are fancy and don't know who serves weekend lunch or coffee. Do any of the hotels have an appropriate restaurant/cafe for example?
thanks!
