Best place for a quiet business meeting?

3 people. Budget high but not outrageous...

Best place for a quiet business meeting?

Wondering if anyone has suggestions for a restaurant, cafe or other space where I can have a private (or at least semi-private) business meeting. Could be somewhere with a private room, or big booths with lots of space between, or somewhere really slow at off-hours. Midtown preferred.

Thanks!

McEwan's 80?

It's Tartan Day! We're looking for McEwan's 80, on tap or on bottles. St. Andrew's Pub only had scotch ale... Not quite the same thing. Thanks!

Dressler: food recommendations

I'm going to Dressler tonight for a birthday dinner and am wondering what's good?

Beignets, pure and simple

I have gotten in the habit of making Cafe du Monde beigets on the weekend, wondering if there is a place in Manhattan that makes them. Preferably before noon, preferably nothing complicated. Thanks!

Menchanko Tei: recommendations?

I adore the spicy miso menchanko at Menchanko Tei and can never seem to bring myself to order anything else*. Is there another slurptastic dish on the menu that I should try?

* My husband always gets the oden - have tasted that and love it too.

The old Grange Hall the new 'Commerce'

We'll find out on Thursday! (My fingers are crossed.)

Approximations of Grange Hall ambience?

Exciting news! And fingers crossed for February (08). Dressler does look gorgeous, too, so I will give it a try. Thanks all!

Marrons Glaces

Hmm... Haven't been there in a while... Did it close? Maybe I'm the one who has to get out more!

Amazing downtown wine bar?

Not sure how much you're looking to spend but Centovini has a *gorgeous* interior (in a Wallpaper/Moss kind of way) and would definitely be a good place to celebrate. Houston near Mercer.

Marrons Glaces

Fauchon on Park and 56th has them, and they're packaged beautifully. (Available in plain and brandy.) For something similar (but different!), you could also try the Japanese bakery (not sure of the name) off Rockefeller Center - 49th Street off of Fifth Avenue. Several of desserts are made with chestnut.

Approximations of Grange Hall ambience?

This time of year I really find myself missing Grange Hall and its 1) two-person booths 2) gorgeous lighting 3) old New York feel and 4) killer cocktails. Does anyone out there know of a place with similar ambience? Downtown is better but will consider anything. BTW, still waiting for something to stick in the old Grange Hall space....

Sushi lunch specials / west village

Can anyone recommend great sushi places w/ lunch specials? Looking in village/west village. (No all you can eat... never understood that!)

What's opening at 34 Downing Street?

Just wanted to say that I've been to the first night of ordering at the "Blue Ribbon/Downing Street Bar." Beautiful space, though it got overfull quickly (and quite steamy) - it's not really designed to hold more than about 20 people without knocking elbows (and wine glasses). Highly recommended are the foie gras with honey, and the paté toast. The cheese plate (cupole goat cheese) with autumn honey was delish, and there are lots and lots of wines by the glass - also flights, half-bottles, and full bottles. I was tempted to order everything! It's going to be tricky to find a time to go there when it's not packed, but it's definitely a welcome addition to the block. I'm curious to hear others' feedback.

Downtown Wkend Brunch - don't want to wait in line

We will be a group of 6, and would like to try a new brunch place that is yummy but low-key enough where the wait - if any - will be short. Maybe impossible on the weekend but I thought I'd ask. Village/West Village/SoHo. Cafe Henri is our old standby - also Cornelia Street Cafe or Home.

What's opening at 34 Downing Street?

Wow - that's great, and a smart choice on their part as BRB is always jam-packed, with not much of a bar area to speak of. I walk past the space every day, and I'd say an opening is nigh - 3 weeks?

What's opening at 34 Downing Street?

It's been dogging me for months - does anyone out there know what's coming to 34 Downing Street, btw. Bedford and 7th Avenue? I think it might be something owned by the Blue Ribbon empire (Food First LLC). The decor seems Japanese, and the space is tiny, so I'm thinking (and hoping) it's some sort of sake bar...

White with a little bit of fizz

Thanks, all. I will do some taste-testing and will report back -

White with a little bit of fizz

I'm looking for a white wine with a gentle - not full-fledged - bubbles. Preferably something a bit floral. Any suggestions?

Best cheese selection in SF (who deliver locally)

We're NYers and devotees of Murray's Cheese. We wanted to ship some cheeses to a friend of ours in SF, but wanted to order from a place in SF. Reading through past posts, I've seen Cowgirl, Artisan, and 24th Street Cheese Company recommended - as well as the Cheese Shop in Carmel and The Cheeseboard in Berkeley. Any other suggestions and/or affirmations?

Saffron Tea?

From my reference: " We were served saffron tea. It was like drinking liquid rubies: sweet, pure and a very deep red, and yet at the top it had a thin oily layer of gold. 'Be careful,' I was told jokingly as the drinks arrived, ' or you will laugh too much.'" The author had saffron tea at Novin Saffron in Mashhad, Iran.

Lo and behold, I just did a Google search and the company has a web site listing recipes, including saffron tea (using their own prepared mix)! http://www.novinsaffron.com/recipe.htm

Now I just have to figure out how to make it from scratch!...

Saffron Tea?

Hi - Thanks for all the great saffron-related ideas! I may have to try them all. I'll reread the passage in the book I referred to (Colors: A Natural History of the Palette, by Victoria Finlay) and see if I can provide any more details. It may be that because the author was visiting a saffron factory, they gave her something very particular and not at all traditional or widespread throughout Iran. She describes it as delicious - like "liquid rubies" - and was warned that too much would give her the giggles. I'll check out your suggestions, but please do let me know if you hear anything from your mother!

Saffron Tea?

I recently read a book in which saffron tea was mentioned - it sounds delicious! The book mentioned it as prepared in Iran, with honey, but offered no other specifics. I was wondering if anyone out there can recommend 1) a recipe for saffron tea 2) a restaurant that offers saffon tea 3) a place to purchase saffron (Kalustyan's?) or saffron tea bags. Thanks!

Aperol Aperitivo

Does anyone know the recipe for an Aperol aperitivo? I know it's Aperol + prosecco, but I'm not really sure of the proportions, and wonder if I need to add a little soda or something else. I've had a delectible one at La Bottega at the Maritime Hotel, NYC, and can't seem to recreate it at home.

West Village Sushi

I used to go to Miyabi all the time (3rd btw 6th Ave + Macdougal) but it's changed management and not sure how it's survived. It's a little lacking in ambience, but affordable.

Yama (on Carmine or Houston) is good but the sushi is served in abnormally-large portions.

Taka (on Grove & 7th Ave) is my favorite sushi place, and while it's not cheap I think they still have an early bird special.

Top 5 Burgers

I'm not a big burger person, but the last burger I had that made me wish I ate them more often was at Daddy-O, a bar/resto on Bedford & Leroy in Manhattan. Juicy, with the works, and I could swear there way some homemade mayo on there. Yum!

Holiday dinner at Raoul's

Any recommendations for menu and/or drinks? Much appreciated.

CAMPBELL APARTMENT

Anyone been here recently to report back? I'm slated to go here after work with a friend though I know it's probably the wrong time to go...

Sublime Cocktails?

Angel's Share is one of my favorite bars in the city, and definitely a spot to go for classic cocktails. Atmosphere is warm and cool simultaneously - and the "rules" are simply no large groups, no standing, and no shouting. Thank god for the rules! In terms of food, you can eat at Yokocho next door, or order small dishes in the bar itself (same kitchen).

Brunch near Metropolitan Museum (on a Saturday)

I'm looking for an alternative to Sarabeth's (if it still exists on the UES) for a Saturday brunch with my mother. Any suggestions? Could be UWS and we'll take the bus over, too.
