Best Aloo Gobi in Artesia?

I am looking for the best Aloo Gobi in or close to Artesia (Little India). If there is a buffet that offers it daily that is a good option for me as well.

Thanks!

Out of towner wants to play tourist in LA/Hollywood/Beverly Hills

Need your help on a couple items...I have co-worker visiting from Georgia in July. I've never met her in person, but she has requested I show her LA. I never do touristy LA things so I'm not sure where to start. She wants to do one of the Hollywood/LA/B. Hills tours on one of those buses or whatever and after the tour she wants to eat at some great LA hotspots where we might see a movie star.

1. Can you recommend one of those tours
2. Can you recommend where to eat to see the stars

I realize the food question is very broad, but she says she is not picky & likes everything.

Hoping you have some good suggestions for both.

Thanks!

Is there a nice bar in Long Beach?

Slim pickings in Long Beach. I realize this is a chain, but the Claim Jumper has a casual bar with good seating (booths) for more privacy to chat.

good food in cambria?

Sandy's for lunch - inexpensive excellent sandwiches & fantastic looking salads as well. It's across the street from the shell station. For breakfast - sunday brunch at the Moonstone Grill overlooking the ocean is quite nice. Linn's and Creekside would be my other two breakfast choices.

Need advice for first-time trip (Santa Barbara, Cambria, Monterey, Yosemite, LAX)

My family owns a home in Cambria so I am there visiting often. I'm a pretty casual person so I am just giving some casual, inexpensive options. I would highly recommend for lunch in Cambria a sandwich shop on Main Street called Sandy's. It's across the street from the Shell Gas station. We used to go to the Main Street Grill, but found this place during our last visit and it was delish. I had the tuna sandwich which was the best one I've ever had. It had sunflower seeds, grated carrots and sprouts which made it so tasty. Other diners had huge salads and other great looking sandwiches as well. The bread was fresh and soft as well.

For breakfast my favorite spot is the Moonstone Grill which overlooks the ocean. The view is incredible...not to be missed! I always order the omelet with bacon, cheese & avocado...YUM! I believe they only serve Sunday brunch now. Another 2 options we enjoy for breakfast are Linn's and Creekside Gardens. Both ofter pretty tasty breakfast options.

Going to see comedian at the Long Beach Convention Center Sat. night. Please recommend great restaurant close by for table of 3. We all love pretty much any type of food, but want it to be really yummy.

I would like a few options to run by the group.

First time in Mokena, IL - help!

I will be spending my first time in Mokena, IL visiting my brother. I'm coming from California so I am not familiar with this area whatsoever. I was hoping to find out if there are any great food options to try whether it be breakfast, lunch or dinner...any type of food is fine really...just something really tasty. He just recently moved there himself, so my guess is he doesn't know many places either. Any help you can provide would be appreciated!

Five Crowns, Corona del Mar review

I had posted on Chowhound requesting suggestions for my grandmother's 90th b-day dinner after a visit to the Sherman Gardens nearby. Five Crowns seemed to be the most popular choice especially by Bubblyone. I tend to overthink everything and started researching Five Crowns as I had never heard of it before since we don't live in the area. I read numerous reviews on Yelp which most were not favorable. I asked Bubblyone for more suggestions after this because I was a little nervous. Luckily Bubblyone told me to ignore Yelp and basically trust her suggestion. I could not be more thrilled that I trusted my fellow chowhounder rather than the reviews on Yelp.

I made a 5:00pm reservation and we arrived about 15 minutes early. I was happy to see they were open and serving wine and some light munchies (veggies/dip and chips) to start the evening. We were seated in the main dining room and thought it was very nice. We did notice we were the youngest ones there (we are in our late 30's) and most everyone else was at least 60 and up. Everyone was dressed up and most men wore dinner jackets. We could have cared less though as we are not into trendy restaurants and being hip.

Our waitress greeted my grandmother with a "Happy Birthday" and my grandmother looked so surprised that she knew. (I had noted it on our Open Table reservation) She then had a big grin on her face and felt pretty important I think. Hubby tried a margarita on the rocks and said they were very liberal with the tequila.

They had the fire going and lots of fresh flowers throughout. We ordered a bottle of wine (Pino) to start which turned out to be the perfect bottle for us and started munching on the wonderful warm bread (nice sourdough and a lovely brown bread that was so good)! I love nothing more than a great bread basket to start the evening! Grandma/hubby ordered ceasar salads and I had the Crown Salad which were all very tasty. Tommy was constantly there to pour our wine the minute the glass looked a tad low.

Hubby and I both ordered the Rib Eye steaks. Okay...they were huge and we swapped our mashed potatoes for the gorgonzola gratin. The Rib Eye was the best I have ever had. We've had Flemmings and Ruth's Chris before...but we were shocked to find that this truly was the best Rib Eye we've had yet. It was cooked and seasoned perfectly. Oh geez....we both locked eyes as they rolled in the back of our heads! A little (or big) piece of heaven! Grandma ordered the Colorado Rack of Lamb and said it was delicious. Her's looked perfectly pink and cooked nicely...just the way she enjoys it. The gratin was so good & cheesy and the veggies on the plate were also very yummy...a little overcooked on the veggies, but still quite good. I stole my husbands off his plate. I also requested some of the creamed horseradish on the side...it's very fluffy and light, but so good. We ordered some plain as well and mixed a little in to the creamed for more heat. YUM!

We had the chocolate souffle for dessert which came with whip cream and an orange sauce. We topped it with a bit of both and again went the eyes rolling to the back of our heads. Damn!!! It was soooooo good!

Our waitress was fantastic. The wait staff does a fantastic job and is so attentive to your every need. They brought grandma's dessert out with a candle which was a nice touch and wished her a Happy Birthday again. They did not charge us for her dessert either which was nice.

Our bill came out to just over $200.00 before tip. It was so funny because my grandmother asked to see the bill. She was dying to know how much dinner cost because she is still living in the dark ages where she thinks you should still be paying $.50 for a cup of coffee and maybe $5.00 for a steak. The look on her face was priceless when I gave her a peek. I think she was worried we may have to head to the back & do dishes or something. Too funny!

Anyway, again I want to thank the chowhounders for sending us to the right place which turned out to be a perfect evening for us. Bubbyone...thank you for stickin' to your guns and telling me to ignore the Yelpers. It certainly paid off and was the perfect place to send us. THANK YOU!

BubblyOne, I spoke to my husband about it and he thought from the sounds of it your suggestion is perfect. He reminded me that I am overthinking this as I usually do and we will be taking your suggestion & heading to Five Crowns tomorrow night. I tend to go over the deep end when planning any big celebration, vacation etc...and try to read every little review/detail I can find on whatever the subject may be. In this case...Five Crowns!

Thank you to everyone else that has pitched some other ideas to me. I will probably utilize those suggestions for when she turns 91!

We look forward to the evening and I will report back our review. Thanks to all you chowhounders with such helpful feedback!

BubblyOne, I made a reservation last night for Five Crowns, however, I started reading reviews on Yelp.com and many were not very favorable. I'm a little concerned. Since you are from that general area, do you have any other recommendations for Costa Mesa, Newport Beach or Irvine that would still be nice for the occassion? I'm not trying to be a pain in the butt, but if we are forking out the $$$ I want it to be really good food too. Just not super fancy or stuffy, but nice enough for a 90th b-day with good food for the price.

Since your a Five Crowns regular, what do you recommend ordering? Also any idea on the pricing? The menu on their website doesn't list any.

I'm not necessarily looking for trendy...I'll be with my grandmother & hubby, but looking for something nice with good food.

What do you think of Sherman Gardens and how much time do you think we'll need to visit there? Any other sites in the area you would recommend visiting...trying to make a nice day out of it.

thanks & keep the recommendations coming!

I am planning on spending the early afternoon at the Sherman Library & Gardens over the weekend and am looking for a really nice early dinner location for a 90th b-day celebration. Any suggestions for a really nice dinner (preferably steak/seafood) near Corona Del Mar...we will be heading back to Anaheim so even something between Corona Del Mar & Anaheim would be fine.

Thanks!

Suggestions for 90th b-day celebration

Hi, I'm looking for ideas for my grandmother's 90th b-day celebration. She lives in Anaheim so I'm considering taking her to a tea house or gardens in the Orange County area. I would like to take her to a nice tea or a nice luncheon with gardens. She's always been very fond of flowers, japanese gardens etc. If you have other suggestions I'm open to it as well...just looking for a special day with her. It will be my husband, her and myself. I also was contemplating renting a limo to because I know she's never been in one before. Any ideas for the Orange County area?

Thanks!

Holiday party, Redondo Bch/Long Beach

Well, it would be nice if it included 1 or 2 drinks, but since the budget is small, the guests will most likely need to purchase their own alcohol.

Thanks for the reply's everyone! This will give me a good start!

Holiday party, Redondo Bch/Long Beach

Any suggestions on where to hold a holiday dinner for about 80 ppl. Budget is a slim $50.00 per person. Sit down or buffet is fine. Would like something on the water if possible. Could be anywhere from Redondo Beach, Long Beach, Manhattan Beach etc... Figure a restaurant is the only way to go because I think hotels would be too expensive. Appreciate any suggestions or other creative ideas such as a dinner cruise or something different. Thanks a bunch!

Getting desperate for 50's Chinese food!

You might want to try Mings in Bellflower. They have the bright orange 50's style booths, cork ceilings, fake bonsai plants etc.. They've been around for 55 years I think. It's at 17812 Bellflower Blvd / cross street is Cedar. Right off the 91 fwy, Bellflower Blvd exit. I LOVE their pork egg rolls...they are delish.

90th B-day celebration - restaurant or venue suggestions

Wow, thanks for the responses. She walks with a walker so yes I consider her somewhat mobile. I'm not sure nowadays what is fun for her...I think just getting out of her apartment would be fun at this point! :-) Her b-day is in March 09'. I would like to do something during the day (luncheon possibly) as I would imagine most of the elderly guests would not want to drive at night. She thinks she can hear great, but I would beg to differ. :-) I haven't really come up with a budget yet. I guess I'm trying to come up with some ideas for locations first, then will try to figure it out according to what we do. She's now living in an apartment at a retirement community, but used to have a lovely home with a big garden. She used to do a lot of cooking, gardening, floral arranging and has been very interested in all the different cultures throughout the LA area for over 60 years. Keep the suggestions coming! I'm going to be doing a lot of research over the internet as I need to start the planning now. Again, I really appreciate all your help! You guys are great!

90th B-day celebration - restaurant or venue suggestions

My grandmother is getting ready to celebrate her 90th birthday so we want to plan a surprise party for her. She lived in Sherman Oaks for 60+ years and most of her friends live there so we will plan on that general area as the party location. Looking for suggestions on a venue for approximately 25 to 30 people...some place that would be fun for her. We plan to rent a limo to drive us from Anaheim (where she now resides) to the Valley, have the party, then head back. Any thoughts/suggestions as I've lived in Cerritos area for many years so I'm not that familiar with the Valley.

Thanks for your suggestions!

Company Party - Where should we eat???

Some friends that I am working with now said they had a nice company party at the Cheesecake Factory in Redondo Beach overlooking the marina. I believe they had the upstairs to themselves, away from the main restaurant. They said it was a very nice evening and their budget was $40 pp.
